8 Best AI Assistants for WhatsApp (October 2026)

Meta pulled ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity out of WhatsApp on January 15, 2026. ChatGPT came back in Europe in July, after an EU order. Everywhere else, the only general-purpose AI left inside WhatsApp is Meta’s own.

So “AI for WhatsApp” now means one of three things: a chatbot you message, an agent that answers your customers, or an assistant that does your work and sends the WhatsApp as part of it.

Short answer: Carly is the best AI assistant for WhatsApp when the message is part of a bigger job. It sends from your WhatsApp Business number and also holds all your email accounts and calendars, so one text moves the meeting, sends the WhatsApp and drafts the follow-up email. Meta AI is the free pick for chatting inside the app. Meta Business Agent, Respond.io and WATI are for answering customers at volume.

We checked eight assistants in October 2026, reading prices and limits off each vendor’s own pages. Three questions set the order: does it act on WhatsApp or only chat, does the same request reach your calendar and inbox, and does it run when you are not typing.

What changed on WhatsApp in 2026

  • January 15: Meta’s revised WhatsApp Business terms reached every existing account and barred general-purpose AI chatbots from the Business API. ChatGPT, Copilot and Perplexity left. AI that serves a business’s own customers is still allowed.
  • June 3: Meta Business Agent went global. On the API its replies are their own billed category, $2 per million tokens, which Meta puts at about 4 to 5 cents a message.
  • June 9: the European Commission ordered Meta to restore free access for rival AI assistants across the EEA until its antitrust case ends. ChatGPT was back on WhatsApp there by July 13.

1. Carly

Carly is an AI assistant you reach on the web, by text, or by email (it has its own address you can CC or forward to). Connect WhatsApp and it sends messages from your WhatsApp Business number, so contacts see a normal message from you.

What makes it the pick is everything else it holds. Carly connects all your Gmail and Outlook accounts and all your Google and Outlook calendars at once, and Carly connects to thousands of apps, so the WhatsApp is the last step of a job instead of the whole job:

  • One text, three actions. Text Carly “move my 3pm with Emily Parker to Thursday and WhatsApp her the new time.” It finds an open slot across every calendar, moves the event and sends the message.
  • Updates pulled from your tools. “WhatsApp Michael Bennett the status of the Henderson kitchen job” pulls the latest from Asana or your CRM and sends it.
  • Follow-ups after meetings. When a client call ends, Carly writes the recap from your Fathom or Fireflies notes, sends the short version on WhatsApp and the full one by email.
  • Confirmations on a trigger. When someone books through your Carly booking page, a workflow sends the WhatsApp confirmation with the address and adds the job to your task list.
  • Scheduled sends. Every weekday at 7am, your crew lead gets the day’s jobs from your calendar on WhatsApp.

You describe a workflow in plain English and Carly builds and runs it; ready-made ones live at carlyassistant.com/workflows. Triggers include new email, calendar events, schedules and forms. That is the gap with Meta AI, ChatGPT and Gemini: they act when you type, and Carly acts when something happens.

Connect it:

  1. Open carlyassistant.com/integrations.
  2. Find WhatsApp, click Connect, and sign in with the Meta account that manages your WhatsApp Business number.
  3. Connect your Gmail, Outlook and calendars on the same page, then text Carly or set up an agent with standing instructions.

Best for: owners, consultants and service businesses whose clients live on WhatsApp but whose day lives in a calendar and an inbox.

Pricing: Free Zapier-style workflows; AI agents from $35/month

Limitations: Carly sends through WhatsApp’s Business Platform, so you need a WhatsApp Business number tied to a Meta business account first. WhatsApp allows free-form messages only within 24 hours of a contact’s last message; after that it has to be an approved template, and Meta bills its own per-message rates to your WhatsApp account. Every Business Platform tool on this list works under the same rules.

Why it wins: it is the only entry that turns “tell Josh on WhatsApp” into the calendar change, the email and the task as well, across every account you have, without you hosting anything. Get started.

AI you chat with inside WhatsApp

2. Meta AI

Built into WhatsApp and free. Tap the Meta AI button, or type @Meta AI in a group, to ask questions, create and edit images, or talk by voice. Optional Message Summaries condense unread chats through Meta’s Private Processing, which Meta says keeps the messages unreadable to Meta and WhatsApp.

Best for: quick answers and images without leaving the chat.

Pricing: Free. Meta One Core ($7.99/month) and Premium ($19.99/month) add more image and video generation.

Limitations: WhatsApp says Meta AI sees only what you send it or @mention it in, plus summaries you request. It answers in the chat where you asked; it does not message your contacts for you or touch your calendar or inbox. See Meta AI alternatives.

3. ChatGPT on WhatsApp (Europe only)

Message 1-800-CHATGPT (+1-800-242-8478) and ChatGPT replies in the thread, no account needed. OpenAI switched it off worldwide on January 15, 2026, then re-enabled it in the European Economic Area on July 13 after the Commission’s order. Availability follows your WhatsApp number’s country code, and linking a ChatGPT account syncs your history.

Best for: EU users who want ChatGPT without the app.

Pricing: Free, with usage limits

Limitations: outside the EEA the number is still dark. Inside it, ChatGPT is a chat partner: it cannot see your other WhatsApp chats, message anyone for you, or run on a schedule.

4. OpenClaw

The open-source personal agent that went viral early this year runs on your own machine or server and links to WhatsApp through WhatsApp Web with a QR code, so it lives in a real WhatsApp account instead of a business number. Wire it to email, calendar and scripts and it acts on what you message it.

Best for: developers happy to host, secure and maintain their own agent.

Pricing: Free software; you pay for hosting and the AI model

Limitations: OpenClaw’s own docs recommend a dedicated number over your personal one, and users report WhatsApp bans on linked accounts, since WhatsApp Web automation sits outside Meta’s official API. Its first months also brought exposed instances and malicious plugins (what happened). Compare Carly vs OpenClaw.

5. Gemini on Android

On Android, Gemini sends WhatsApp messages and places WhatsApp calls when you ask (“text Claire Thompson on WhatsApp that I’m outside”), and helps word the message. Through Google’s separate Device assistance app it can also read and reply to WhatsApp notifications.

Best for: hands-free messaging on an Android phone.

Pricing: Free with the Gemini app

Limitations: Google’s help page says Gemini cannot read or summarize your WhatsApp history, and cannot send images or play audio in messages. It works only in the Android app, not the Gemini web app, and only when you ask.

AI that answers your customers on WhatsApp

6. Meta Business Agent

Meta’s own customer-facing agent, global since June 3, 2026. It answers questions about your business, recommends from your catalog, books appointments, qualifies leads and closes sales across WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger, and hands off to a person when you decide. Meta says more than a million businesses already use one.

Best for: small businesses that want round-the-clock customer replies inside the WhatsApp Business app.

Pricing: Free to start. Meta One business plans add more Business Agent capacity from $14.99/month (Essential). On the API, about 4 to 5 cents per AI reply by Meta’s estimate.

Limitations: it works your customers, not your day. Meta lists “connecting with the tools to manage your calendar” as a future capability, and the agent stays inside Meta’s apps.

7. Respond.io

A shared inbox for WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, email and more, with AI Agents that answer and route customer chats.

Best for: sales and support teams running WhatsApp as a main channel.

Pricing: Starter $79/month billed yearly ($99 monthly) has AI Assist but no AI Agents. Growth is $159/month billed yearly ($199 monthly) with AI Agents and 1,000 monthly active contacts. WhatsApp fees are not included.

Limitations: the bill climbs with monthly active contacts, and Trustpilot reviewers complain that billing is hard to follow. It is a customer inbox, not an assistant for your own calendar and email.

8. WATI

A WhatsApp-first inbox and broadcast tool with Astra AI Agents for customer chats on WhatsApp, web and voice.

Best for: ecommerce and D2C brands sending campaigns and handling support on one number.

Pricing: US plans: Growth $59/month billed annually ($69 monthly), no AI agents. Pro $119/month billed annually ($149 monthly) unlocks Astra, an add-on priced separately. Message charges extra, and prices vary by region.

Limitations: recent Trustpilot reviews from August and September 2026 describe slow, AI-first support, refused refunds and a hard cancellation process. Like Respond.io, it answers customers, not your own schedule.

How to pick

If your clients are on WhatsApp but the work happens in your calendar and inbox, go with Carly. One text covers the WhatsApp, the meeting and the email, and workflows keep sending when you are busy.

If you want an AI to chat with in WhatsApp, Meta AI is already there and free. In Europe, ChatGPT is back.

If customers flood your WhatsApp with the same questions, start with the free Meta Business Agent, then move to Respond.io or WATI when you need a team inbox and routing.

If you want hands-free sending from an Android phone, Gemini.

If you want to host your own agent, OpenClaw, on a number you can afford to lose.

FAQ

What is the best AI assistant for WhatsApp?

Carly, if you want WhatsApp tied to your calendar, inbox and other apps. It sends from your WhatsApp Business number when you ask or when a trigger fires. Meta AI is the best free chatbot inside the app, and Meta Business Agent is the easiest way to auto-answer customers.

Is ChatGPT still on WhatsApp?

Only in the European Economic Area. OpenAI turned 1-800-ChatGPT off on January 15, 2026 after Meta’s policy change and brought it back in the EEA on July 13, 2026, following the European Commission’s order. Elsewhere it is still unavailable. For an assistant that sends WhatsApp messages and works your calendar too, connect WhatsApp to Carly.

Can AI send WhatsApp messages for me?

Yes. Gemini sends them on Android when you ask. Carly sends them from your Business number when you text or email it, or automatically when a workflow fires on a new email, a calendar event, a schedule or a form. More than 24 hours after a contact’s last message, WhatsApp requires an approved template.

Does Meta AI read my WhatsApp chats?

WhatsApp says Meta AI sees only messages you send it or @mention it in, plus unread-message summaries you choose to request, which run through Private Processing. Your other chats stay end-to-end encrypted.

Is it safe to connect an AI to my personal WhatsApp?

Tools that link through WhatsApp Web, like OpenClaw, run outside Meta’s official API, and users report bans. Carly, Meta Business Agent, Respond.io and WATI use the official Business Platform. To connect Carly, open the integrations page, find WhatsApp and click Connect.

See what people say

"Before Carly, I relied on a Calendly link, but the whole process felt impersonal and not very professional. Carly changed that by handling all the back-and-forth, so I'm no longer stuck in endless email threads trying to line up schedules.

Now Carly reaches out to candidates, shares my real-time availability, lets them pick a slot, then sends a Zoom link and drops it straight into my calendar. She sends reminders to both of us before each call, which has significantly reduced no-shows and last-minute confusion.

On top of scheduling, Carly acts like a full executive assistant, sending me my schedule the night before so I can prepare for each call. It reminds me of the old x.ai assistant, but Carly is noticeably smarter, faster, and better suited to my healthcare recruitment business."
