The Individual tier is free with basic intelligence, 90 days of search history, a limited daily AI quota, and a “Sent with Shortwave” signature on outgoing mail. Pro is $18 per seat per month. Business, Premier, and Max cost $30, $45, and $120 monthly, with increasing history, AI usage, context, and AI-filter allowances.
Shortwave is not mailbox-only. Starter is $30 per member per month billed monthly or $25 annually. Business is $40 monthly or $33 annually and adds Auto Drafts, Ask AI, custom labels, HubSpot, Salesforce, and the Superhuman Mail MCP server.
Superhuman does more than accelerate manual triage. Auto Drafts, Auto Labels, Auto Archive, and Auto Reminders can run in the background. Its Salesforce integration can update CRM fields directly, and Mail MCP lets an outside agent search mail, draft or send messages, and create or update calendar events. Cross-app workflows require connecting the other systems to that same agent.

Missive is built for a small team sharing an inbox: conversations, internal comments alongside the customer thread, assignments, and collaborative drafts are its core workflow.

Productive is $30 monthly or $24 annually and is the first tier with rules, AI automations, external integrations, API access, and webhooks. Business is $45 monthly or $36 annually. AI requires Productive or Business and either supported credits or a connected model key.
Missive is the clearest counterexample to the mailbox-only premise. Native panels connect CRMs including HubSpot, Salesforce, Pipedrive, and Close; project tools include Asana, ClickUp, Trello, and Todoist. Webhook rules can fire on incoming or outgoing mail and label changes, and the REST API can create or send drafts and synchronize contacts.
Canary and Thunderbird
Canary stores mailbox data with the provider and indexes locally. Its privacy policy says personalized prioritization runs on-device, while writing, summarizing, reply, and chat features send relevant text to hosted model providers that are opted out of training. Growth costs $36 per year and adds AI, calendar and scheduling, and app integrations; Pro+ costs $100 per year and adds PGP, SecureSend, and advanced threat protections.
Thunderbird is free, open source, and combines email, calendar, contacts, and multiple accounts. AI is third-party rather than native. ThunderAI, for example, can analyze, write, correct, or tag mail and create calendar events or tasks using hosted models or a local Ollama server.
Why Notion Mail and HEY are not ranked
Notion Mail is shutting down on September 22, 2026. The shutdown affects every plan, and users must export drafts, scheduled mail, snippets, and auto-label instructions by September 21. It should not be adopted as an active email client now.
HEY is a paid email service with screening and a built-in calendar, not an AI client for Gmail or Outlook. HEY for You costs $99 per year after a 30-day trial. It may be a deliberate email replacement, but it has no documented AI feature set that belongs in this ranking.
Where their reach still differs
There is no single stopping point. Shortwave Business can act through MCP; Spark exports work to productivity tools and exposes mail and calendar through its CLI; Superhuman edits CRM records and offers Mail MCP; Missive exposes integrations, webhooks, and an API. Their limits differ: some actions require a person to invoke them, some stay inside mail and calendar, and some need an outside automation or agent to complete a multi-app workflow.
If triage is the main problem, choose on interface, search, drafting, and provider support. If emails must trigger reliable work across business systems, compare trigger model, integration breadth, approval controls, and whether automation continues when the client is closed.
