Claude for Word: Tracked Changes, Not Silent Rewrites
Claude for Word’s defining choice is that it never edits your document silently. Every change it proposes lands as a native Word tracked revision: the original text as a deletion, the new text as an insertion, reviewable in Word’s own review pane. You accept or reject each one exactly as you would a human editor’s.
That single decision is why it works on documents that matter. An AI that rewrites a contract in place is unusable for legal review. An AI that redlines it is just another reviewer.
The add-in is in beta on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise, and installs as part of the Claude for Microsoft 365 add-in alongside Claude for Excel and Claude for PowerPoint.
What it does inside a document
- Answers with section citations. Ask a question about the document and the answer links to the specific sections it came from, so verification is a click rather than a search.
- Edits selected text while preserving formatting. Numbering, styles, and structure survive the edit.
- Works through comment threads. It reads existing comments, makes the edits they ask for, and replies in the thread.
- Fills templates. Drop in a structure and it populates it with correctly formatted content.
- Navigates semantically. Find the provision that covers a topic without knowing which heading it lives under or what it’s called.
Contract review is the use case it was built around
Anthropic’s flagship example is legal document work, and the capability list reads that way. Claude for Word recognizes multi-level numbering, defined terms, and contractual structure as structure rather than as text that happens to be indented.
The practical version: you can ask it to flag clauses that deviate from a standard market position, or to standardize indemnification language across a document, and it understands the request at the level of the instrument rather than the paragraph. Long multi-section documents are where it earns its place, because that’s where a person loses the thread and an AI with the whole document in view doesn’t.

The build-number requirement is the one that trips people up, because “I have Microsoft 365” isn’t sufficient. A tenant on a slow update ring can be current on licensing and still too old to run the add-in.
Documents are processed in the cloud, which means the file goes to Anthropic’s servers. That’s a normal arrangement and worth knowing before a confidential document goes through it.
Where Anthropic says to stop
Not for final client deliverables, litigation filings, or documents holding highly sensitive data without human review. Given that contract review is the headline use case, the caveat is doing real work: Claude produces a redline, and a person is still responsible for the document.
There’s also a prompt-injection risk from untrusted external documents. A file from outside your organization can carry text engineered to steer what Claude does with it, which matters most in exactly the workflow this add-in targets, since inbound contracts come from the other side.
Carrying context from Excel and PowerPoint
Claude for Word shares a conversation with the Excel and PowerPoint add-ins, so a memo can be drafted from analysis you just did in a workbook without re-explaining it or pasting numbers across.
The setting is called Office agents. On Pro and Max it’s on by default; on Team and Enterprise an owner enables it at Organization settings and each member then toggles “Let Claude work across files” in the add-in. The constraint is that Claude only reaches files that are already open, and it cannot open or switch files itself. Claude Office Agents has the full behavior.
The document gets drafted. Everything after it doesn’t.
A redline is one step in a process that has many. The contract still has to go back to counterparty, get chased when it sits unsigned, get filed against the right matter, and trigger the renewal reminder eleven months later.
The unattended-work gap closed in 2026: ChatGPT Scheduled Tasks and Claude Cowork both run on their own. The remaining gap is what starts them. These run on a timer, not in response to an event in your apps, so "when this happens, do that" is still outside what they do.
None of that happens inside Word, because nothing in Word is watching.
