Simpro AI in 2026: Cooper, Lightning, and the Gaps They Leave
If you searched “Simpro AI” in the middle of 2026, you picked a moment when the answer changed twice in eight weeks. Simpro spent years as the unglamorous, deeply capable system that commercial contractors ran their whole business on — and shipped almost nothing wearing an AI label. Then in May it launched Lightning, and in July it shipped RAIN on top of it.
So the honest answer has two halves. Simpro’s own AI is real, it is new, and most of it is still arriving. And there is a second half — the recurring, contractual, easy-to-forget work that sits between visits — where Simpro’s API turns out to be far more capable than the AI marketing suggests.
Lightning and Cooper: what Simpro actually launched in May
On 13 May 2026 Simpro Group launched Lightning, described as an AI-native operating platform for the field service trades and, in the company’s own framing, the largest single product release in its history. It landed simultaneously across all three of the group’s brands — Simpro Lightning in Australia, New Zealand, North America and the UK; AroFlo Lightning in Australia and New Zealand; BigChange Lightning in the UK and Europe.
Underneath it sits Cooper, which Simpro positions as an AI orchestration engine rather than a chatbot bolted onto the sidebar. The distinction matters commercially more than it matters to you: Cooper is the layer that lets Simpro ship AI features quickly across three separately-acquired products. What you see are the agents built on top.
There were four at launch, and all four target the same wound — the gap between what a technician knows and what ends up written down:
- JobReady compiles the pre-dispatch briefing. Job history, customer record, site details, parts. The thing a good service coordinator does by hand before a tech drives to a site they haven’t been to in eleven months.
- JobScribe turns a technician’s voice recording into structured job documentation.
- JobBrief generates the post-job summary that goes to the customer.
- FieldReady handles technician onboarding, training new hires on your company’s own workflows rather than generic procedure.
Simpro is explicit about who this is aimed at: electrical, security, HVAC, plumbing, utilities maintenance and specialist infrastructure contractors — sectors the company describes as running on 5-10% margins. That is a commercial-contracting audience, not a residential one, and the agent list reflects it. Nobody builds FieldReady for a two-van outfit.
RAIN: the July wave, and the one feature that changes scheduling
On 7 July 2026 Simpro shipped RAIN, the first wave of features built on Lightning. Across the three brands that’s over 100 AI-infused enhancements; on Simpro specifically the count is 7 new features, 46 AI enhancements and 247 customer-requested improvements.
Two Simpro-specific items are worth naming:
The Intelligent AI Scheduler. It assigns technicians using location, skills, certifications and real-time availability, with drive-time reduction as an explicit goal. For a multi-tech commercial operation this is the one with real money attached — matching a licensed refrigeration tech to the right site without a coordinator holding the whole roster in their head is genuinely hard, and it is exactly the class of problem this kind of model is good at.
Field Inventory Control. Mobile inventory for technicians, including van stock-takes. Boring, and it will save more arguments than the scheduler will.
Simpro and BigChange also both picked up a native sales pipeline and CRM layer for leads and opportunities. AroFlo got real-time schedule re-optimisation and Smart Safety Forms that identify hazards from photos.
The part to read carefully: these features roll out progressively over the following months, at no additional cost to existing Lightning customers, with a further milestone — THUNDER — flagged for later in 2026. If you go looking in your build today and can’t find the AI scheduler, that is the rollout, not you.
What Simpro’s AI does not do
Look at the four launch agents again. JobReady briefs before dispatch. JobScribe writes up after the visit. JobBrief summarises for the customer. FieldReady trains a tech. Every one of them attaches to a job that already exists.
That is a deliberate and sensible place to start, and it leaves the specific thing that hurts a maintenance-contract business: the work between the jobs. Nothing on that list watches a service agreement and tells you it lapses in six weeks. Nothing counts how many of the twelve scheduled visits on a contract have actually been delivered by month nine. Nothing notices that a chiller failed its last two test readings and is heading for a callout you’ll wear the cost of.
For an operations manager running eighty planned-maintenance agreements across a few hundred assets, that is the job. The reactive work announces itself — the phone rings. The contractual work only announces itself when it’s already late, or at renewal when the client asks why they paid for four visits and got three.
If your instinct is to reach for ChatGPT or Claude to cover this, understand the shape of what you’d get:
The unattended-work gap closed when ChatGPT and Claude Cowork added scheduled runs. Their standard schedulers still start from the clock, not arbitrary events in connected apps; API-triggered ChatGPT Workspace Agents require an external event detector and caller.
And with Simpro specifically there’s a further catch: neither OpenAI nor Anthropic ships a Simpro connector, and Simpro has not published its own MCP server. That’s the ordinary state of affairs for vertical software — ServiceM8 building its own MCP server is the exception, not the rule — but it means the chat-assistant route into Simpro doesn’t exist off the shelf. Anything reaching your build reaches it through the API.
The Simpro API, precisely
This is where Simpro is much stronger than its peers, and where the useful automation actually lives.
It is a public REST API, and an ordinary customer can self-provision credentials. You register an application inside your own build at System → Setup → Integrations → API → Applications, using OAuth 2.0 with the authorisation code grant. Requests go to your build: https://<your-build-name>.simprosuite.com/api/v1.0/. No developer programme, no sales call, no partner agreement. (Partner registration exists, but it’s for vendors shipping one integration across many customers’ builds — it isn’t a gate on your own data.)
The surface is enormous. The published reference runs to well over three hundred resource sections. The ones that matter for maintenance work are all there and all first-class:

That list is the real finding. Contract, service level, asset, test history and schedule are all readable and writable by an ordinary account holder. Everything you’d want an assistant to watch in a planned-maintenance business is exposed.
And Simpro has self-serve webhooks. Full CRUD on webhook subscriptions at /api/v1.0/companies/{companyID}/setup/webhooks/, with a real event list — job.created, job.status, job.stage, job.schedule, job.note, invoice.status, invoice.stage, asset.created, asset.updated, customer.updated, payment.created and more. No partner status required. This is a materially better position than most trades platforms, where webhooks are locked behind a published add-on.
The catch is who can receive one. A webhook needs something listening at an endpoint. ChatGPT and Claude have no inbox for that. So the events exist, they’re yours, and they need a piece of middleware to land in.

The first two are questions you can already answer — if someone spends an afternoon in reports. The third is the one that pays for itself, because contract renewal is the single most valuable event in a maintenance business and it is the one with no alarm attached to it.
Two things worth being straight about.
