How to Give ChatGPT a Phone Number

3:27 · October 20, 2026

ChatGPT can have its own phone number. Copy one setup prompt from Carly, paste it into ChatGPT, and ask it to "get me a new number." ChatGPT creates the agent and picks the number for you, so you never have to click through a settings screen. From there the number does three jobs. Calls you miss or decline go to the agent, which qualifies the caller, transfers them live to a person, books a meeting or takes a message. You can tell ChatGPT to call someone, then steer the agent while the call is live. And when a qualified lead fills out your form, the agent calls them and books the appointment. Put the number on your website and the agent answers those calls too. The same steps work in Claude, Meta Muse, Grok Bot and Perplexity.

Step by step

  1. 01

    Copy the setup prompt

Go to usecarly.com, open the Account page and press "Use Carly Teams for business calls and texts." Copy the setup prompt.

  2. 02

    Paste it into ChatGPT

Send the prompt to ChatGPT, or to Claude, Meta Muse, Grok Bot or Perplexity. Press connect when it asks you to sign in.

  3. 03

    Ask for a number

Ask ChatGPT: "Get me a new phone number." It creates the agent and picks the number for you.

  4. 04

Send your missed calls to the agent

Tell ChatGPT to answer every call you miss or decline. The agent qualifies the caller, transfers them live, books a meeting or takes a message, and you can get a morning email with every call it handled.

  5. 05

Have it call people, and steer the call live

Ask ChatGPT: "Call this number right now, just to say hello." While the call is live, tell it what to say next, like "Tell her she's overdue for an appointment."

  6. 06

    Call qualified form leads automatically

Ask: "Set up a form that collects a phone number and number of employees. If they're qualified, have the agent call them and book a meeting." You'll see how many meetings the agent booked or transferred, side by side with your human reps.

"Before Carly, I relied on a Calendly link, but the whole process felt impersonal and not very professional. Carly changed that by handling all the back-and-forth, so I'm no longer stuck in endless email threads trying to line up schedules.

Now Carly reaches out to candidates, shares my real-time availability, lets them pick a slot, then sends a Zoom link and drops it straight into my calendar. She sends reminders to both of us before each call, which has significantly reduced no-shows and last-minute confusion.

On top of scheduling, Carly acts like a full executive assistant, sending me my schedule the night before so I can prepare for each call. It reminds me of the old x.ai assistant, but Carly is noticeably smarter, faster, and better suited to my healthcare recruitment business."
