ChatGPT + Apify: What the Integration Can (and Can't) Do
Partially — there’s no Apify app in ChatGPT’s directory, but Apify runs an official hosted MCP server and documents the ChatGPT setup itself as a custom connector. Once connected, ChatGPT can search Apify Store and run any of thousands of Actors — the scrapers, crawlers, and automations Apify hosts — with usage billed to your Apify account. The connection uses OAuth, so there’s no client ID or secret to manage. But Apify is upfront that the ChatGPT MCP integration is still in beta: execution can be slow, and there’s one setup quirk that bites people — the tools you select at connector-creation time can’t be changed afterward. And like everything in ChatGPT, it runs in a session you’re driving; nothing watches your scrape runs between chats.
Here’s what the ChatGPT Apify integration actually does, how to set it up without locking yourself into the wrong tool selection, and what to use when you want scraped data flowing somewhere useful on its own.
What ChatGPT can actually do with Apify
- Search Apify Store conversationally. “Find me an Actor that scrapes Google Maps reviews” — ChatGPT queries the store and surfaces candidates instead of you browsing categories.
- Run Actors from the chat. “Run the Google Maps scraper for dentists in Denver and show me the top 20 results” kicks off a real Actor run on your Apify account, billed against your Apify usage.
- Chain scrape → analysis in one conversation. Because the results land in the chat, you can immediately ask ChatGPT to dedupe, summarize, or reformat what came back.
- Go beyond the hosted server if you self-host. The server is open source at apify/apify-mcp-server if you want to run and configure it yourself.
- Use it inside agent runs. With ChatGPT Work (launched July 9, 2026), an agent can run Actors as part of a longer metered task across your connected apps — still a run you start by hand.
How to set it up
- You need a ChatGPT plan with custom connector support — Business/Enterprise connectors, or Pro/Plus with Developer mode enabled (Apify’s docs call out the Developer mode requirement).
- In ChatGPT, go to Settings → Apps & Connectors → Create.
- Enter the server URL:
https://mcp.apify.com. Authentication is OAuth — you’ll be sent to Apify to approve access, with no client ID or secret to paste. - Choose your tools carefully at this step. URL parameters preselect which Apify tools the connector exposes, and the selection cannot be changed after the connector is created. If you want a different toolset later, you delete and re-create the connector.
- Ask something like “search Apify Store for an Amazon product scraper and run it on this ASIN list.”
Two caveats from Apify’s own docs: the integration is beta and Actor execution through ChatGPT can be slow, and OpenAI may flag social-media scraper tools with safety warnings — don’t be surprised if certain Actors trip a review step.
The limits that actually matter
- No triggers. There’s no “when a scrape run finishes, do X.” ChatGPT starts Actor runs when you prompt it and never reacts to an Apify event — a scheduled Actor that completes at 3am tells ChatGPT nothing.
- Tool selection is frozen at creation. The connector quirk above isn’t cosmetic: pick too narrow a toolset and you’ll be re-creating the connector mid-project.
- Session-bound, even in agent mode. ChatGPT Work runs are long and autonomous but manually started and metered — a big errand, not a standing pipeline.
- Cross-stack follow-through stops at the chat. Scraped data doesn’t flow onward into Sheets, your CRM, or your team’s inbox unless you copy it there yourself.
- Beta friction. Slow execution and possible safety flags on scraper tools are documented behavior today, not edge cases.
If you want Apify work that runs on its own: Carly
Scraping is rarely the end of the job. The real workflow is “run the scrape, clean the results, put them where the team works” — and that’s exactly the part a chat session can’t do unattended.
That’s where Carly fits. Carly is an AI executive assistant that acts on triggers across your whole stack, set up by conversation instead of code:
- Fires on events and schedules, 24/7, in the cloud. “When a scrape run finishes, clean the data into Google Sheets and email me the summary” — Carly does it without a chat open.
- No-code setup. Describe the pipeline in plain English; Carly interviews you and builds the workflow.
- Connects scraping to the rest of your work — Apify results flowing into spreadsheets, CRM records, and email in one flow.
- Actually sends — drafts and sends email across Gmail and Outlook, updates records, creates tasks.
- Connects to anything — 200+ native integrations, plus any other tool via your own API key.
AI agents start at $35/month, and steps in a workflow that don’t use AI run free and unlimited. Carly natively integrates with Apify.

ChatGPT’s Apify connector is a scraper console you drive in a chat. Carly is an assistant that runs the whole data pipeline while you’re doing something else.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does ChatGPT work with Apify?
Yes, via a custom connector — there’s no Apify app in ChatGPT’s directory, but Apify hosts an official MCP server at mcp.apify.com and documents the ChatGPT setup in its own platform docs. It uses OAuth and works on plans with custom connector support (Business/Enterprise, or Pro/Plus with Developer mode).
Can ChatGPT run Apify scrapers?
Yes. Once the connector is set up, ChatGPT can search Apify Store and execute Actors — scrapers, crawlers, and automations — with usage billed to your Apify account. Apify notes the integration is still in beta and execution can be slow, and OpenAI may flag social-media scraper tools with safety warnings.
Can I change which Apify tools ChatGPT can use after setup?
No. URL parameters preselect the tools when you create the connector, and the selection cannot be changed afterward. To use a different toolset, delete the connector and create it again with new parameters.
Can ChatGPT do something automatically when an Apify run finishes?
No. ChatGPT only acts inside a session you start — it never fires on an Apify event. For “when a scrape run finishes, clean the data and email the summary,” you need a trigger-based assistant like Carly.

"Before Carly, I relied on a Calendly link, but the whole process felt impersonal and not very professional. Carly changed that by handling all the back-and-forth, so I'm no longer stuck in endless email threads trying to line up schedules.
Now Carly reaches out to candidates, shares my real-time availability, lets them pick a slot, then sends a Zoom link and drops it straight into my calendar. She sends reminders to both of us before each call, which has significantly reduced no-shows and last-minute confusion.
On top of scheduling, Carly acts like a full executive assistant, sending me my schedule the night before so I can prepare for each call. It reminds me of the old x.ai assistant, but Carly is noticeably smarter, faster, and better suited to my healthcare recruitment business."
