Customer Service Statistics 2026: Speed, Cost and AI
Customer service data in 2026 tells two stories at once. Expectations keep climbing, with most customers now wanting an answer in minutes, while the people answering spend under half their working day actually talking to customers. Here are the customer service statistics worth knowing, each sourced inline with the year noted.
What customers now count as a fast reply
88% of customers expect faster response times than they did just a year ago (Zendesk CX Trends, 2026). The bar moves every year, and it only moves one way.
74% of consumers now expect customer service to be available 24/7, a shift Zendesk attributes directly to AI making instant answers feel normal (Zendesk CX Trends, 2026).
90% of customers rate an immediate response as important or very important when they have a customer service question, and 60% define “immediate” as 10 minutes or less (HubSpot Research). That 10-minute definition is the number most support teams quietly fail.
82% of service professionals agree that customer expectations are higher than they used to be (Salesforce, 2025).
Bad service puts nearly $3 trillion at risk
Nearly $3 trillion of global sales are at risk in 2026 because of bad customer experiences (Qualtrics XM Institute, 2026). The estimate comes from surveying consumers across 23 countries and mapping the result onto World Bank household consumption data.
$865 billion of that figure is spending consumers stop entirely with organizations that deliver very poor experiences, with a further $2.1 trillion they cut back rather than cancel (Qualtrics XM Institute, 2026).
$3.8 trillion was the equivalent figure for 2025 (Qualtrics XM Institute, 2025), and 12% of all interactions left consumers reporting a very poor experience that year. Two consecutive years of trillion-scale estimates make this a structural cost, not a blip.
Most unhappy customers never tell you
73% of consumers will switch to a competitor after multiple bad experiences (Zendesk, 2026).
56% of consumers rarely complain about a negative customer experience at all. They quietly switch to a competitor instead (Zendesk Benchmark data, 2026). Your complaint volume is not your problem volume.
88% of customers say good service makes them more likely to purchase from the same company again (Salesforce, 2024). Service is a retention lever before it is a cost center.
Agents spend under half the day on customers
39% is the share of their time agents actually spend servicing customers, with the rest lost to internal meetings, administrative tasks and manually logging case notes (Salesforce State of Service, 2024).
46%: though 81% of service representatives say building relationships with customers is an important part of their job, they spend less than half their time with customers, due in part to admin and internal responsibilities (Salesforce, 2025).
18% of mobile workers’ hours, more than seven hours in a standard working week, are wasted on admin duties such as filling out forms and hunting for information (Salesforce, 2025). 37% of technicians say admin tasks keep them from doing their actual jobs.
How much of the queue is routine
61% of customers would prefer to use self-service to resolve simple issues (Salesforce, 2025). A large share of inbound volume is work customers would rather not have contacted you about.
80% of high-performing service organizations provide a self-service solution, compared with just 56% of low performers (Salesforce, 2025).
76% of service organizations anticipate higher case volumes in the year ahead (Salesforce State of Service, 2024). Volume grows, headcount usually does not.
Where AI has actually landed in support
79% of organizations have invested in AI, and 81% use workflow or process automation (Salesforce State of Service, 2024). Adoption is no longer the interesting question.
93% of service professionals at organizations with AI say the technology saves them time (Salesforce, 2024), and service teams using AI agents expect case resolution times and service costs to fall by an average of 20% (Salesforce, 2025).
81% of consumers believe AI has become part of modern customer service (Zendesk, 2026). Customers have already priced it in.
80% of common customer service issues will be resolved autonomously by agentic AI by 2029, according to a Gartner prediction published in March 2025 (Gartner, 2025). Note the word “common”: the forecast is about routine volume, not the hard cases.
What a small team should automate first
The data points at one gap: customers want a reply inside ten minutes, and the people replying are losing most of their day to admin around the reply. For a small team, the fix is rarely a bigger help desk. It is automating the handoffs, the logging and the follow-up that sit either side of the actual answer. Carly does that across email, calendar and the rest of your stack, drafting replies, booking the call and updating records without anyone retyping anything. Carly connects to thousands of apps, so the routine half of the queue can move on its own while people take the cases that need judgment.

"Before Carly, I relied on a Calendly link, but the whole process felt impersonal and not very professional. Carly changed that by handling all the back-and-forth, so I'm no longer stuck in endless email threads trying to line up schedules.
Now Carly reaches out to candidates, shares my real-time availability, lets them pick a slot, then sends a Zoom link and drops it straight into my calendar. She sends reminders to both of us before each call, which has significantly reduced no-shows and last-minute confusion.
On top of scheduling, Carly acts like a full executive assistant, sending me my schedule the night before so I can prepare for each call. It reminds me of the old x.ai assistant, but Carly is noticeably smarter, faster, and better suited to my healthcare recruitment business."
