How to Block Emails in Outlook (Every Version, 2026)
Outlook gives you several ways to stop unwanted emails — blocking individual senders, blocking entire domains, and reporting spam or phishing. The exact steps depend on which version of Outlook you’re using. Here’s how to do it in each one, plus how to unblock senders and manage your blocked list.
1. Block a Sender in Outlook on the Web (Microsoft 365 / Outlook.com)
- Go to outlook.office.com and sign in.
- Open an email from the sender you want to block.
- Click the three-dot menu (More actions) at the top of the message.
- Select Block (or Block [Sender’s Name]).
- A confirmation dialog appears. Click Block to confirm.
Future emails from that address go straight to your Junk Email folder. Messages in Junk Email are automatically deleted after 14 days.
To block from Settings directly: Go to Settings (gear icon) → Mail → Junk email. Under Blocked senders and domains, click + Add, type the email address, and press Enter. Click Save.
2. Block a Sender in New Outlook Desktop (Windows & Mac)
The new Outlook app shares the same interface as Outlook on the web, so blocking works nearly identically.
- Open the new Outlook desktop app.
- Find a message from the sender you want to block.
- Right-click the message and select Junk → Block Sender.
- Confirm by clicking Block in the popup.
Alternatively, open the message, click the three-dot menu, and select Block.
To block from Settings: Go to Settings (gear icon) → Mail → Junk email. Under Blocked senders and domains, click + Add, enter the email address or domain, and click Save.
3. Block a Sender in Classic Outlook for Windows
Classic Outlook uses the Junk Email Options dialog for managing blocked senders.
- Open classic Outlook and select a message from the unwanted sender in your Inbox.
- On the Home tab, in the Delete group, click Junk.
- Click Block Sender.
You can also right-click the message, point to Junk, and select Block Sender.
The address is immediately added to your Blocked Senders list, and any existing messages from that sender in your Inbox are moved to the Junk Email folder.
To add a blocked sender manually: Go to Home → Junk → Junk E-mail Options. Select the Blocked Senders tab, click Add, type the email address or domain, and click OK.
4. Block a Sender in Outlook Mobile (iOS & Android)
- Open the Outlook mobile app.
- Open the email from the sender you want to block.
- Tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
- Tap Report Junk.
- Select Block Sender and confirm.
To manage blocked senders on mobile: Tap your profile icon (or open the sidebar menu), go to Settings, scroll to the Mail section, and tap Blocked Senders and Domains.
Some advanced blocking and unblocking options are only available through Outlook on the web or desktop — if you don’t see what you need on mobile, sign in at outlook.office.com.
Block an Entire Domain
Blocking a domain stops all email from every address at that domain (e.g., blocking example.com blocks sales@example.com, support@example.com, and every other address at that domain).
Outlook on the web / New Outlook desktop:
- Go to Settings (gear icon) → Mail → Junk email.
- Under Blocked senders and domains, click + Add.
- Type the domain name (e.g.,
example.com— no@needed). - Press Enter, then click Save.
Classic Outlook for Windows:
- Go to Home → Junk → Junk E-mail Options.
- Select the Blocked Senders tab.
- Click Add.
- Type
@example.com(include the@in classic Outlook). - Click OK, then OK again.
You don’t need to list subdomains separately — blocking example.com covers all subdomains as well.
Unblock a Sender or Domain
If you blocked someone by mistake, or you want to start receiving their emails again:
Outlook on the web / New Outlook desktop:
- Go to Settings (gear icon) → Mail → Junk email.
- Find the address or domain under Blocked senders and domains.
- Click the trash icon (or X) next to the entry you want to remove.
- Click Save.
Classic Outlook for Windows:
- Go to Home → Junk → Junk E-mail Options.
- Select the Blocked Senders tab.
- Select the address or domain you want to unblock.
- Click Remove.
- Click OK.
After unblocking, new messages from that sender will arrive in your Inbox normally. Any messages already in Junk Email stay there — you’ll need to move them manually.
Manage Your Blocked Senders List
Your blocked senders list holds up to 10,000 entries (addresses and domains combined, shared with the safe senders list). If you’re hitting the limit, block domains instead of individual addresses to cover more ground with fewer entries.
To review your full blocked list:
| Version | Where to find it |
|---|---|
| Outlook on the web | Settings → Mail → Junk email → Blocked senders and domains |
| New Outlook desktop | Settings → Mail → Junk email → Blocked senders and domains |
| Classic Outlook (Windows) | Home → Junk → Junk E-mail Options → Blocked Senders tab |
| Outlook mobile | Settings → Mail → Blocked Senders and Domains |
From each of these screens you can add new entries, remove entries, or review what’s currently blocked.
Report Spam and Phishing
Blocking stops one sender, but reporting helps Microsoft improve spam filtering for everyone. All current versions of Outlook include a built-in Report button (Microsoft retired the older Report Message and Report Phishing add-ins in 2025).
Outlook on the web / New Outlook desktop:
- Select the suspicious message (don’t click any links inside it).
- Click Report in the toolbar.
- Choose Report phishing, Report junk, or Report as not junk (if a legitimate email was flagged).
- Confirm your selection.
Classic Outlook for Windows:
- Select the suspicious message.
- On the Home tab, click Report (or Junk → Report as Phishing).
- Confirm when prompted.
Outlook mobile:
- Open the suspicious message.
- Tap the three-dot menu.
- Tap Report Junk and choose the appropriate option.
Reporting a message as phishing sends a copy to Microsoft for analysis and moves the message to your Junk Email folder.
Add Safe Senders (the Opposite of Blocking)
If legitimate emails keep landing in Junk Email, add the sender to your Safe Senders list to ensure their messages always reach your Inbox.
Outlook on the web / New Outlook desktop:
- Go to Settings → Mail → Junk email.
- Scroll to Safe senders and domains.
- Click + Add safe sender.
- Enter the email address or domain.
- Click OK, then Save.
Classic Outlook for Windows:
- Go to Home → Junk → Junk E-mail Options.
- Select the Safe Senders tab.
- Click Add, enter the address or domain, and click OK.
- Optionally check Automatically add people I e-mail to the Safe Senders List to auto-trust anyone you reply to.
You can also right-click any message, point to Junk, and select Never Block Sender or Never Block Sender’s Domain as a shortcut.
