How to Delete Files From Dropbox (2026)

Deleting in Dropbox has two stages: a normal delete (recoverable for a while) and a permanent delete that actually frees space. Here’s how to do both, everywhere.

1. Delete on the Web (dropbox.com)

  1. Sign in and open the folder.
  2. Hover over a file and tick its checkbox (select several at once if needed).
  3. Click Delete in the toolbar, or right-click > Delete.

The item moves to Deleted files — still recoverable for now.

2. Delete on the Desktop App

  1. Open your Dropbox folder in File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac).
  2. Select the file or folder and press Delete (Windows) or drag to Trash (Mac).
  3. It syncs the deletion to the cloud and your other devices.

3. Delete on Mobile

  1. Open the Dropbox app and find the file.
  2. Tap the next to it.
  3. Tap Delete.

4. Permanently Delete (Free Up Space)

A normal delete keeps the file recoverable, so it can still count against history. To remove it for good:

  1. On dropbox.com, click Deleted files in the left sidebar.
  2. Select the items.
  3. Click Permanently delete.

This is also how you ensure sensitive files are truly gone.

5. Troubleshooting

The file came back after I deleted it

Another device re-synced it before going offline, or it’s in a shared folder someone else restored. Delete it again while all devices are online.

I deleted something by mistake

Open Deleted files, select it, and click Restore — Dropbox keeps deleted items for 30 days (longer on paid plans).

My storage didn’t go down

Normal deletes don’t immediately reclaim space because of version history. Use Permanently delete in Deleted files.

"Before Carly, I relied on a Calendly link, but the whole process felt impersonal and not very professional. Carly changed that by handling all the back-and-forth, so I'm no longer stuck in endless email threads trying to line up schedules.

Now Carly reaches out to candidates, shares my real-time availability, lets them pick a slot, then sends a Zoom link and drops it straight into my calendar. She sends reminders to both of us before each call, which has significantly reduced no-shows and last-minute confusion.

On top of scheduling, Carly acts like a full executive assistant, sending me my schedule the night before so I can prepare for each call. It reminds me of the old x.ai assistant, but Carly is noticeably smarter, faster, and better suited to my healthcare recruitment business."
