Soft hollow letterforms with a clean outline ring sitting over layered circles

How to Outline Text in Canva (2026)

Canva doesn’t have a one-click “stroke” on every text box, but you can get a clean text outline using Effects or a quick duplicate-and-stack method. Here’s both.

1. The Fastest Way: the Hollow / Splice Effect

  1. Click your text box.
  2. Click Effects in the top toolbar.
  3. Under Style, try:
    • Hollow — turns letters into pure outlines.
    • Splice — gives a filled letter with an offset outline.
  4. Adjust Thickness and Offset sliders to taste.

This is the cleanest single-element outline.

2. The Duplicate-Stack Method (Custom Color Outline)

For an outline in a different color than the fill:

  1. Create your text and apply the Hollow effect — set its color to your outline color. This is the back layer.
  2. Duplicate the text (Ctrl/⌘ + D).
  3. On the copy, remove the effect and set it to your fill color.
  4. Drag the filled copy exactly on top of the hollow one. Use Position > Align to center both.

Result: filled letters with a contrasting outline.

3. Make Titles Pop on Busy Photos

A thick Hollow or a Splice outline keeps titles legible over photos. Pair white text with a dark outline (or vice versa) for maximum contrast.

4. On Mobile

  1. Tap the text, tap Effects.
  2. Choose Hollow or Splice and adjust the sliders.

5. Troubleshooting

The effect changes all my text

Effects apply to the whole text box. To outline only some words, put them in a separate text box.

My outline copy keeps drifting

Select both layers and use Position > Align elements (center horizontally and vertically) to lock them, then group them.

The outline looks jagged

Increase font size — thin outlines on small text render rough. Bigger text gives smoother edges.

"Before Carly, I relied on a Calendly link, but the whole process felt impersonal and not very professional. Carly changed that by handling all the back-and-forth, so I'm no longer stuck in endless email threads trying to line up schedules.

Now Carly reaches out to candidates, shares my real-time availability, lets them pick a slot, then sends a Zoom link and drops it straight into my calendar. She sends reminders to both of us before each call, which has significantly reduced no-shows and last-minute confusion.

On top of scheduling, Carly acts like a full executive assistant, sending me my schedule the night before so I can prepare for each call. It reminds me of the old x.ai assistant, but Carly is noticeably smarter, faster, and better suited to my healthcare recruitment business."
