Lead Generation Statistics 2026: Cost, Channels, Speed

The average search advertising lead costs $66.69 (WordStream by LocaliQ Google Ads benchmarks, 2026), the median landing page converts 6.6% of its visitors (Unbounce Conversion Benchmark Report, 2024), and when 1,000 B2B companies were sent a demo request, only 365 replied at all (RevenueHero, 2024).

Read together, those three say the expensive part of lead generation comes after the form fill. Here are the lead generation statistics worth citing in 2026, sourced inline with the year noted, plus a section tracing the famous numbers to their origin.

How many marketers say lead generation is their top challenge

29.6% of marketers name generating leads as a top challenge, third behind measuring marketing ROI (33%) and keeping up with trends and platforms (29.8%) (HubSpot State of Marketing, 2026, a survey of 1,500+ global marketers). 27.6% name sales-marketing alignment. HubSpot sells marketing software, so read it as such.

55.7% of marketers say it is easier to generate leads now than a decade ago (HubSpot, 2026).

24.5% say their lead volume significantly increased over the past 12 months, and another 50% say it somewhat increased (HubSpot, 2026). 93.8% say lead quality improved over the same period.

Cost per lead by industry

$66.69 is the average cost per lead across Google Ads and Microsoft Ads search campaigns (WordStream by LocaliQ, 2026). The figure comes from the company’s own account data: more than 13,000 search campaigns across 23 industries, running between April 2025 and March 2026. A lead here means a call, chat, form fill or email, and those campaigns convert at an average of 8.18%.

Cost per lead fell for the first time in five years (WordStream by LocaliQ, 2026). It is still up about 13% from $59.18 in the 2016 edition of the same report.

$131.63 is the cost per search lead for attorneys and legal services, the most expensive category, followed by furniture at $106.70 and real estate at $102.51 (WordStream by LocaliQ, 2026).

$26.84 is the cheapest, for arts and entertainment, followed by automotive repair at $29.96 and restaurants and food at $30.57 (WordStream by LocaliQ, 2026). Business services run $93.69, home improvement $90.92 and finance and insurance $74.44.

$237 is the blended cost per lead for B2B SaaS, split into $310 for paid channels and $164 for organic (First Page Sage, 2025). The agency reports legal services at $649 and higher education at $982. These run far above the search-ad figures because they count total marketing spend, and the data comes from the agency’s own clients (2022 to 2025) with no sample size stated.

What is a good landing page conversion rate

6.6% is the median landing page conversion rate across all industries, from platform telemetry covering 41,000 landing pages, 464 million visitors and 57 million conversions in Q4 2024 (Unbounce, 2024).

3.8% to 12.3% is the range of industry medians (Unbounce, 2024). SaaS sits at the bottom with 3.8%, and entertainment at the top with 12.3%.

19.3% is the average conversion rate for landing page traffic arriving from email, the highest of any channel, against 12% for paid social and 10.9% for paid search (Unbounce, 2024). See email statistics for volumes.

How fast companies respond to a new lead

365 of 1,000 B2B companies responded to a demo request sent through their own website, automated replies included (RevenueHero, 2024). RevenueHero sells lead routing software, so read it as such.

1 day, 5 hours and 17 minutes was the average response time among the companies that did reply (RevenueHero, 2024).

172 of the 1,000 responded instantly, and only 113 offered any way to book a meeting inside the demo request flow (RevenueHero, 2024).

The older benchmark is an audit of 2,241 U.S. companies in which 37% responded within an hour and 23% never responded (Harvard Business Review, 2011). The full figures, and the number of touches a lead takes, are in sales follow-up statistics.

Lead quality versus lead volume

20% of B2B marketers rate increased lead quality their single most important goal, against 16% for increased lead volume (Demand Gen Report Benchmark Survey, 2025). 23% rated lead volume their least important goal. The report states no sample size.

55% put raising the conversion rate from MQL to opportunity among their top three demand generation priorities (Demand Gen Report, 2025).

38% list better alignment between marketing and sales among their top three priorities, and 31% are shifting away from lead volume and MQL targets toward higher-quality leads (Demand Gen Report, 2025). Quota and win-rate data sits in sales statistics.

How far buyers get before they contact a seller

61% of the way through the buying journey is when B2B buyers first contact a seller, earlier than the 69% measured in 2023 and 2024 and worth roughly six to seven weeks (6sense Buyer Experience Report, 2025, just under 4,000 respondents). 6sense sells intent data, so read it as such.

79% of first engagements are initiated by the buyer, against 82% in prior years (6sense, 2025).

8 out of 10 deals go to the vendor the buyer contacts first (6sense, 2025). The winner comes from the shortlist buyers drew up on day one 95% of the time.

67% of B2B buyers say they prefer a rep-free buying experience (Gartner, 2026, 646 buyers surveyed August through September 2025).

Up to 95% of business buyers are out of the market for a given category at any one time (Ehrenberg-Bass Institute, 2021, for the LinkedIn B2B Institute). It is arithmetic and not a survey: companies that switch providers about every five years put 20% in the market in a given year and 5% in a given quarter.

How AI is changing lead generation

94% of B2B buyers use large language models during the buying process (6sense, 2025), and 58% say the need to evaluate a vendor’s own AI features made them contact sellers earlier.

45% of B2B buyers used AI during a recent purchase (Gartner, 2026).

86.4% of marketing teams use AI in at least a few areas of their work (HubSpot, 2026). The full picture is in AI marketing statistics.

Where the famous lead generation statistics come from

“Respond within 5 minutes and you are 21 times (or 100 times) more likely to qualify the lead.” This one is real, old and narrow. It comes from the Lead Response Management Study by Dr. James Oldroyd with InsideSales.com, presented in 2007. The 100x figure is the drop in the odds of contacting a lead called at 30 minutes instead of 5, and 21x is the drop in the odds of qualifying it. The data covered six companies, a little over 15,000 leads and 100,000 call attempts, all phone calls, and the study states that it “did not address close ratios.” It is sometimes credited to Harvard Business Review, which published a different dataset four years later.

“79% of marketing leads never convert into sales.” Attributed to MarketingSherpa, usually with no report title, year or link. Older HubSpot lists of lead nurturing stats carry it in exactly that form. We could not find a primary source or a methodology.

“Nurtured leads make 47% larger purchases.” Attributed to The Annuitas Group, again by name only. We could not find a primary source.

“Companies that excel at lead nurturing generate 50% more sales-ready leads at 33% lower cost.” Attributed to Forrester Research, by name only, in the same lists. We could not reach a Forrester report that contains it, so the definition of “excel” is unknown.

“61% of marketers say generating traffic and leads is their top challenge.” Attributed to HubSpot’s State of Inbound 2018. HubSpot’s own 2026 survey puts it at 29.6%.

Replying to a new lead before it goes cold

Buyers make contact late, usually with the vendor they already prefer, and then wait more than a day for an answer. Carly closes that gap: it replies to a new inquiry when it arrives, books the meeting on the right calendar, keeps following up across email until the lead answers, and logs each step to the CRM. Carly connects to thousands of apps, so the form tool, inbox and CRM a team already uses stay in place. See the best AI CRM tools.

"Before Carly, I relied on a Calendly link, but the whole process felt impersonal and not very professional. Carly changed that by handling all the back-and-forth, so I'm no longer stuck in endless email threads trying to line up schedules.

Now Carly reaches out to candidates, shares my real-time availability, lets them pick a slot, then sends a Zoom link and drops it straight into my calendar. She sends reminders to both of us before each call, which has significantly reduced no-shows and last-minute confusion.

On top of scheduling, Carly acts like a full executive assistant, sending me my schedule the night before so I can prepare for each call. It reminds me of the old x.ai assistant, but Carly is noticeably smarter, faster, and better suited to my healthcare recruitment business."
