Content Marketing Statistics 2026: Cost, Cadence, and AI
1,312 words is the average blog post in 2026, and it takes 3 hours and 20 minutes to write, according to Orbit Media’s annual blogger survey of 1,042 content marketers. Both numbers are falling: length peaked at 1,427 words in 2023, writing time at 4 hours 10 minutes in 2022.
Production got faster and cheaper. Reported results went the other way. Here are the content marketing statistics worth knowing in 2026, sourced inline with the year.
Average blog post length and production time
1,312 words is the 2026 average, down from the 2023 peak of 1,427 (Orbit Media, 2026). The survey has run since 2014, when the average was closer to 800 words.
3 hours, 20 minutes is the average time to write one post, the fourth straight annual decline from the 2022 peak of 4 hours 10 minutes (Orbit Media, 2026).
50 hours a year is what the average content marketer has stopped spending on writing since 2022, a figure Orbit calculates from 57 posts a year at roughly 50 minutes faster per post (Orbit Media, 2026), a full working week.
How often teams publish
57 posts a year, a little over one a week, is the working average behind Orbit’s 2026 time calculations.
12% of content marketers published two to six times a week by 2022, down from 28% in 2014, while monthly publishing doubled over the same stretch (Orbit Media, 2026).
Publishing monthly or less now sits in Orbit’s weak-performance group, alongside handing editing to AI (Orbit Media, 2026). Updating older articles peaked at 73% of marketers and has slipped since.
What a blog post costs
$611 is the average cost of a human-written blog post, against $131 for an AI-generated one, a 4.7x gap measured across a survey of 879 marketers (Ahrefs, 2025).
$2,475 versus $2,442 is the monthly content spend of companies using AI against those that do not (Ahrefs, 2025). The per-post cost collapsed and the budget barely moved, so teams bought volume, not savings.
$111,891 is the average total annual income of a content marketer, up 0.48%, the smallest rise in the history of Superpath’s salary report (2025, 316 respondents). Full-time staff average $113,276; freelancers $108,319, down almost 11%.
Adoption, strategy, and self-rated effectiveness
97% of B2B marketers say they have a content strategy, leaving only 3% without one (CMI and MarketingProfs B2B Content and Marketing Trends: Insights for 2026, fielded June to August 2025 among 1,015 B2B marketers).
59% rate their marketing at least somewhat effective over the past year: 12% highly effective, 47% somewhat effective, 31% neutral (CMI, 2026).
65% of effective teams credit content relevance and quality for the improvement, followed by team skills at 53% and alignment with sales at 45%, with budget allocation back at 20% (CMI, 2026).
Where the 2026 content budget goes
45% of B2B marketers name AI-powered marketing tools among the top three areas they plan to increase investment in for 2026 (CMI, 2026). Events and experiential marketing follow at 33%, owned media at 32%.
9% plan to increase investment in human resources: salaries, training and development. That ranked dead last of the ten options (CMI, 2025), in a survey where effective teams credited people over tools.
The measurement gap
33% of B2B marketers name measuring content effectiveness among their top three challenges, behind creating content that prompts action (40%) and resource constraints (39%) (CMI, 2026).
13.9% of content marketers say their blog delivers strong results, an all-time low, down from 26% in 2022 (Orbit Media, 2026). The figure had held between 20% and 30% for 12 years.
18% now answer “I don’t know” when asked whether their blog delivers results, up from a decade-long range of 9% to 14% (Orbit Media, 2026). Nearly one in five cannot say whether the work is working.
Where AI entered content production
92.4% of content marketers use AI for blogging, up from near zero three years ago (Orbit Media, 2026). AI users and the 8% who abstain are equally likely to report strong results.
95% of B2B organizations use AI-powered marketing applications, and 89% of those use it for generating or optimizing written content (CMI, 2026).
87% versus 39% is the split: among B2B marketers using AI for content creation, 87% say productivity improved, but only 39% say content performance improved, and 12% say content quality decreased (CMI, 2026).
What still correlates with results, and one number to drop
2.6x: content marketers who collaborate with influencers and outside experts beat the strong-results benchmark by that multiple, the single best predictor in Orbit’s 2026 dataset. It is also the most abandoned, down from 25% of marketers in 2017 to 7% today.
50%: publishing original research raises the likelihood of strong performance by about half. Marketers using six or more of the eight strategies Orbit tracks are nearly three times as likely to report strong results, and none of the 1,042 respondents do all eight (Orbit Media, 2026).
One famous figure does not survive a source check. “Content marketing costs 62% less than outbound and generates three times the leads” traces to a Demand Metric infographic whose page carries no methodology, no sample size and no fielding date, only a gated download.
Keeping a content calendar moving
Most of a content calendar is not writing. It is briefs, drafts coming back, review reminders, approval chasing and interviews with the experts whose participation correlates with results. Carly handles the email and calendar side of that loop, and it connects to thousands of apps, so the nudge on Michael’s overdue review goes out without anyone checking a spreadsheet to spot it.

"Before Carly, I relied on a Calendly link, but the whole process felt impersonal and not very professional. Carly changed that by handling all the back-and-forth, so I'm no longer stuck in endless email threads trying to line up schedules.
Now Carly reaches out to candidates, shares my real-time availability, lets them pick a slot, then sends a Zoom link and drops it straight into my calendar. She sends reminders to both of us before each call, which has significantly reduced no-shows and last-minute confusion.
On top of scheduling, Carly acts like a full executive assistant, sending me my schedule the night before so I can prepare for each call. It reminds me of the old x.ai assistant, but Carly is noticeably smarter, faster, and better suited to my healthcare recruitment business."
