What Gemini Spark does on your Mac today
The July 1 Mac beta is where Spark stopped being an I/O demo and became a product you can run. Right now it can:
- Work with local files on your computer. Spark can read, sort, and organize files on your Mac, and turn them into Workspace docs — point it at a folder of receipts or meeting notes and it produces structured Google Docs and Sheets.
- Track topics in real time. Sports scores, stock moves, breaking news — Spark monitors what you tell it to and surfaces updates without being asked again.
- Run your Gmail. The original I/O pitch: Spark watches your inbox and handles the repetitive layer of email continuously, not one prompt at a time.
- Manage tasks and notes. The Mac release added connections to Google Tasks and Google Keep, so Spark can capture and organize alongside its other work.
Google also says cross-device assignments are coming — ask Spark something on your phone and have it work through the files on your Mac.
Integrations and MCP support
Spark’s launch integration list reaches outside Google’s walls: Canva, Dropbox, Instacart, OpenTable, and Zillow Rentals, alongside Gmail, Tasks, and Keep. That said, the built-in list is short compared to what the category now offers, and everything non-Google beyond those named partners is a do-it-yourself MCP exercise.
The catch: Google AI Ultra, and only in the US
Spark is gated to Google AI Ultra, and the Mac beta is US-only. At I/O 2026, Google restructured its AI subscriptions: AI Ultra now starts at $100/month (a new entry Ultra tier that includes Gemini Spark, 5x Pro’s usage limits, and 20TB of storage), with the top Ultra tier at $200/month — cut from the previous $250. Both Ultra tiers include Spark access.
So the real price of Spark is at least $1,200/year, before you decide whether you need the $200 tier’s higher limits. Google is deliberately rationing its deepest advantage — default access to your Gmail, Calendar, and Drive — to the top of its pricing ladder. Gemini Spark vs ChatGPT Work
OpenAI launched ChatGPT Work on July 9 — one day after Spark’s Mac beta had settled in — and the two are the clearest head-to-head in AI yet, with different shapes:

What Spark is good at — and where it stops
Spark is genuinely strong at the Google-plus-Mac life: continuous Gmail handling, local file organization into Workspace docs, and ambient tracking. If your work lives in Google’s ecosystem and you already pay for Ultra (or want its bundled limits anyway), it’s the most “ambient” assistant Google has shipped.
