What is an ICS file?
An .ics file is a plain text file in the iCalendar format, defined by RFC 5545. It
describes one or more events using labelled lines such as DTSTART for the start time
and SUMMARY for the title. Because every major calendar app reads it, an ICS file is
how an invite moves between Google, Microsoft, and Apple without anyone sharing an account.
Times here are written in UTC, with your chosen time zone converted for you. That is the most
portable option, because it avoids depending on the recipient's calendar knowing your zone. All-day
events are written as dates instead, with the end date set to the following day, which is how the
spec expects an all-day event to end. Repeating events are written as an RRULE line,
and the Next dates strip above shows what that rule actually produces.
