How to Call and Text People with ChatGPT and Claude

2:40 · October 13, 2026

Claude and ChatGPT can call and text people for you once they're connected to an AI phone agent in Carly. Ask Claude to call someone and find out what you need, like whether they're free for lunch next week at the times you offer. You can steer the call while it's happening by typing to Claude, or have it text people and handle the whole back-and-forth. When they reply, it books the meeting and lets you both know. Setup takes about 10 minutes: create the agent on Carly's Agents tab by describing what it should do, get it a phone number, give it a voice, then paste Carly Teams' setup prompt into Claude or ChatGPT. It works with Grok too.

Step by step

  1. 01

    Create the agent by talking

On usecarly.com, open the Agents tab, press New agent and set it up by talking: just describe what it should do.

  2. 02

    Get a phone number

On the Numbers tab, press Get a number, pick an area code and claim it.

  3. 03

Give the agent a voice and its number

Back on the Agents tab, choose the agent's voice and set its texts and calls to the number you just claimed.

  4. 04

Connect Carly to Claude or ChatGPT

Under Account, find Carly Teams and copy the business setup prompt. Paste it into Claude or ChatGPT and it walks you through a two-click setup.

  5. 05

Or add it to ChatGPT by hand

In ChatGPT, go to Plugins → Add → Add custom MCP server. Paste the MCP URL from your Carly account page, name it Carly Teams, consent, and press Create plugin. Type @Carly Teams in a chat to check it shows up.

  6. 06

Ask it to call or text someone

Try "Call Joe and ask if he's free for lunch next week. I'm open Tuesday at 11:15 or Wednesday to Friday between 11:30 and 2:30." Type to Claude during the call to steer it, or ask it to text someone and book a 30-minute call when they reply.

"Before Carly, I relied on a Calendly link, but the whole process felt impersonal and not very professional. Carly changed that by handling all the back-and-forth, so I'm no longer stuck in endless email threads trying to line up schedules.

Now Carly reaches out to candidates, shares my real-time availability, lets them pick a slot, then sends a Zoom link and drops it straight into my calendar. She sends reminders to both of us before each call, which has significantly reduced no-shows and last-minute confusion.

On top of scheduling, Carly acts like a full executive assistant, sending me my schedule the night before so I can prepare for each call. It reminds me of the old x.ai assistant, but Carly is noticeably smarter, faster, and better suited to my healthcare recruitment business."
