AgentMail: What It Is, How It Works and What It Costs

AgentMail is an email service built for AI agents. Developers use its API to create real inboxes in one call, so an agent can send, receive and reply to email on its own address. Its tagline sums it up: “We’re not AI for your email, we’re email for your AI.”

The quick answer: AgentMail is a solid choice if you’re building agents that need their own inboxes, with a generous free plan and paid plans from $20 a month. It’s a developer tool, and daily send limits matter once volume grows. One note up front: we make CarlyEmail, a direct competitor, so we’ve kept this page to facts you can check and pointed out where AgentMail does well.

How AgentMail works

Ordinary email APIs were designed for one of two jobs: a person using a mailbox, or an app sending one-way messages. An agent needs both directions. It has to read a reply, keep the thread straight, and answer in context.

AgentMail is built around that loop:

  • Programmatic inboxes: create a dedicated address with one API call.
  • Threads: every reply and forward stays grouped in one conversation.
  • Messages and attachments: send and receive email with files.
  • Events: webhooks and websockets let an agent react when mail arrives.
  • Controls: permissions, allowlists and API keys.

CEO Haakam Aujla told TechCrunch the goal was to give agents what people get in Gmail or Outlook, through API calls instead of clicking buttons. It also added an onboarding API, so an agent can sign up and create its own inbox.

The company’s wider idea is identity. “What humans use email for is not even communication. It’s your identity,” Aujla said. Many online services expect an email address, so an agent with an inbox can sign up, verify itself and deal with those services directly. Our explainer on giving an AI agent an email address covers why that matters.

AgentMail’s traction

AgentMail’s growth took off when OpenClaw arrived. TechCrunch reported that its user count tripled in a week in January and quadrupled in February, as people looked for a way to give agents an inbox. At the time, it had more than 500 business customers.

Its site now claims more than 10 million inboxes and more than 1 billion emails processed. It quotes people at Clay and Opendoor, and says AgentCard by Alchemy saw about 70% more agent transactions after integrating. These are company figures.

Developer includes 10 custom domains and two seats, and Startup includes 150 domains, 10 seats and a SOC 2 report. On paid plans, add-ons cost $2 a month for an inbox, a domain or 1,000 extra emails, and $5 a month for a seat. Enterprise adds EU hosting, your own cloud, dedicated IPs and SSO. Adding monthly sends raises your daily limit too, according to AgentMail. Its pricing table shows no separate monthly cap on Startup, while its rate-limits help page lists 150,000, so plan on the lower figure. For a deeper breakdown, see our AgentMail pricing guide.

Where AgentMail is strong

  • The free plan. Three inboxes and 3,000 emails is plenty to build something real.
  • A focused product. It does one job, and its API is designed for that job.
  • Developer experience. Installing the SDK and creating an inbox takes minutes.
  • A head start. It’s one of the best-known names in this category, with customers quoted at Clay and Opendoor.

What to plan for

  • Send limits. The daily caps are the main constraint. A bursty job on the Developer plan can hit 1,000 a day quickly.
  • New-agent limits. To curb abuse, agent-created inboxes can only send 10 emails a day until a person authenticates them. That’s sensible, but it’s worth knowing before you automate signups.
  • Deliverability. New domains and addresses have no reputation. Warm up gradually and keep your sending relevant, on any provider.
  • Prompt injection. Anyone can email an inbox, and your agent will read it. Treat inbound mail as untrusted, and use allowlists for sensitive actions.
  • It isn’t for end users. AgentMail is infrastructure. If you just want AI help with your own inbox, you need a different kind of tool.

How AgentMail compares

Three other routes are common, and our AgentMail alternatives list goes through more of them.

  • Gmail or Outlook APIs: fine for an agent working in your own mailbox, but not for creating many inboxes programmatically.
  • Resend: a sending platform that added Inboxes in 2026. It’s stronger if outbound email is your main job.
  • CarlyEmail: our own email API for agents, with the same core design. Our side-by-side comparison makes our case, so read it knowing we built the alternative.
