AI Replacing Jobs Statistics 2026: Losses and Gains
U.S. employers have attributed 116,175 announced job cuts to AI so far in 2026, about 22% of all announced cuts (Challenger, Gray & Christmas, September 2026). Payroll data shows no evidence of widespread, economy-wide job displacement, but employment of 22-to-25-year-olds in AI-exposed occupations sits 19% below where it would be had it kept pace with less-exposed peers (Stanford Digital Economy Lab, August 2026). Looking ahead, 41% of employers plan to reduce their workforce as AI automates tasks (World Economic Forum, 2025).
Forecasts of what AI could do and measurements of what it has done differ by orders of magnitude, so every figure below is labeled as one or the other.
How many jobs will AI replace (forecasts)
92 million jobs are forecast to be displaced worldwide by 2030 and 170 million created, a net gain of 78 million (World Economic Forum, Future of Jobs Report 2025). That covers every trend the WEF tracks, not AI alone.
9 million displaced, 11 million created is the WEF forecast for AI and information processing technology alone by 2030 (WEF, Future of Jobs Report 2025, 2025).
6% to 7% of the U.S. workforce could be displaced if AI is widely adopted, with a range of 3% to 14% (Goldman Sachs Research, 2025). Goldman calls the effect temporary. If only current AI use cases spread across the economy, 2.5% of U.S. employment would be at risk.
Almost 40% of global employment is exposed to AI, rising to about 60% in advanced economies and falling to 26% in low-income countries (IMF, 2024). The IMF says roughly half of exposed jobs in advanced economies may benefit.
57% of current U.S. work hours could in theory be automated by technology that already exists (McKinsey Global Institute, 2025). McKinsey calls it technical potential, “not a forecast of job losses.”
Did Goldman Sachs say AI will replace 300 million jobs?
No. The 2023 report said AI “could expose the equivalent of 300 million full-time jobs to automation” (Goldman Sachs, 2023). Exposed, not replaced. Goldman’s actual displacement forecast, published two years later, is the 6% to 7% above.
The other number that outlived its source, “85 million jobs displaced, 97 million created by 2025,” comes from the WEF’s 2020 Future of Jobs release, covered automation broadly, and is superseded by the 2025 edition.
How many jobs has AI already replaced (measured)
116,175 announced U.S. job cuts cited AI as the reason from January through August 2026, out of 529,914 total (Challenger, Gray & Christmas, 2026). These are employer announcements with employer-stated reasons, not verified separations.
54,836 announced cuts were attributed to AI in all of 2025 (Challenger, Gray & Christmas, January 2026).
14% of respondents at organizations using AI say it contributed to a decline in workforce size over the past year, less than half the 32% who had expected reductions a year earlier (McKinsey, The State of AI: Global Survey 2026, 2026).
Effects larger than 2% are ruled out for earnings and hours two years after ChatGPT’s launch, in a study of Danish administrative records (Humlum and Vestergaard, NBER, revised March 2026).
No discernible disruption to the broader U.S. labor market appeared in the 33 months after ChatGPT’s release (Yale Budget Lab and Brookings, 2025).
1% of service firms using AI reported laying off workers because of it in the prior six months, while 12% said they had hired fewer workers (New York Fed, 2025).
0.47 is the correlation between an occupation’s AI exposure and its rise in unemployment from 2022 to 2025 (St. Louis Fed, 2025). The authors call it correlation, not causation.
Are entry-level jobs being hit first
19% is the employment gap for workers aged 22 to 25 in AI-exposed occupations relative to less-exposed peers, in ADP payroll data through June 2026 (Stanford Digital Economy Lab, 2026). Experienced workers show no gap. It comes mainly from reduced hiring, and the authors call it an early indicator, not a causal estimate.
No systematic increase in unemployment has appeared for workers in the most AI-exposed occupations since late 2022, though hiring of younger workers shows signs of slowing (Anthropic, March 2026). Anthropic sells AI models, so read it as such.
Which jobs and workers are most exposed to AI
75% of a computer programmer’s tasks are covered by observed AI usage, the highest of any occupation; data entry keyers sit at 67% (Anthropic, 2026). 30% of workers have zero coverage, including cooks, lifeguards and bartenders.
One in four jobs worldwide (24%) has some exposure to generative AI, and one in three in high-income countries (International Labour Organization, 2025). Clerical occupations rank highest.
9.6% of female employment versus 3.5% of male employment in high-income countries falls in the ILO’s highest exposure category, which holds 3.3% of employment globally (ILO, 2025).
47% is how much more workers in the most exposed quartile earn than workers with no exposure, and they are 16 percentage points more likely to be female (Anthropic, 2026).
2% decline: the projected change in U.S. employment of secretaries and administrative assistants from 2025 to 2035, a loss of 75,300 jobs, which the agency ties to technology including AI (BLS, 2025-35 projections). See virtual assistant statistics.
How many jobs is AI creating
69% growth in job postings requiring specific AI skills, against 9% for the total jobs market (PwC Global AI Jobs Barometer, 2026). PwC sells AI consulting.
62% is the average wage premium for jobs requiring AI skills, up from 57% a year earlier (PwC, 2026).
What employers say they will do about headcount
41% of employers plan to reduce their workforce as AI automates tasks, while 77% plan to upskill workers (World Economic Forum, 2025).
39% of respondents expect AI to decrease their organization’s head count over the next year, up from 32% a year earlier; 43% expect little or no change (McKinsey, 2026).
13% of service firms using AI anticipate AI-related layoffs in the next six months (New York Fed, 2025). The same share expected layoffs a year earlier, and very few followed through.
What workers and the public believe
71% of U.S. adults think AI will lead to fewer jobs over the next 20 years, up from 64% in 2024; 5% expect more (Pew Research Center, 2026).
73% of adults under 30 say the same, up from 61% two years earlier (Pew, 2026).
34 of 37 countries surveyed have more people expecting AI to reduce jobs than to add them (Pew Research Center, 2026).
18% of U.S. employees say it is very or somewhat likely their own job will be eliminated within five years due to AI or automation, up from 15% in 2025 (Gallup, Q1 2026).
How many workers need reskilling
59 of every 100 workers will need reskilling or upskilling by 2030, and 11 of them are unlikely to receive it (World Economic Forum, 2025).
39% of workers’ core skills are expected to change by 2030, down from 44% in the 2023 edition (WEF, Future of Jobs Report 2025).
