AI Agent Statistics 2026: Adoption, Spend, and ROI

40% of large organizations (over $1 billion in revenue) say they are scaling AI agents, up from 27% a year earlier, while smaller organizations sit flat at 22% (McKinsey Global Survey on the state of AI, 2026). 53% of large US companies have deployed agents (KPMG AI Quarterly Pulse Survey, Q2 2026). Gartner predicts over 40% of agentic AI projects will be canceled by the end of 2027 (Gartner, 2025).

These numbers cover AI agents specifically: software that takes actions across tools, as opposed to a chatbot someone prompts. Chat assistants are covered in chatbot statistics, general workplace use in AI in the workplace statistics, and job effects in AI replacing jobs statistics.

How many companies use AI agents

53% of US organizations with $1 billion or more in revenue have deployed AI agents, against 55% the prior quarter (KPMG, Q2 2026, 204 US C-suite and business leaders).

18% of those organizations orchestrate multiple agents across workflows, double the 9% of the previous quarter (KPMG, Q2 2026).

79% of senior executives said AI agents were already being adopted in their companies (PwC AI agent survey, 2025, 308 US executives). Among those adopters, 68% said half or fewer of their employees interact with agents in everyday work.

How many companies have scaled AI agents versus piloting them

40% of respondents at organizations with more than $1 billion in revenue report scaling AI agents in at least one function, up from 27% a year earlier (McKinsey, 2026). The survey had 1,719 participants in 97 nations.

22% of respondents at smaller organizations report scaling agents, unchanged from the year before (McKinsey, 2026). Chatbots, by comparison, are being scaled across the enterprise at 47%.

2% of large organizations had fully scaled agent deployment in April 2025, with 14% in implementation and nearly a quarter running pilots (Capgemini Research Institute, 2025, 1,500 executives).

57.3% of agent builders have agents running in production, up from 51% a year earlier, and 67% at organizations with 10,000 or more employees (LangChain State of Agent Engineering, 2025, 1,300+ professionals). LangChain sells agent tooling, so this is a builder sample, not a cross-section of business.

AI agent market size and spending forecasts

Everything in this section is a forecast, not a measurement.

$1.3 trillion is IDC’s forecast for worldwide AI spending in 2029, growth of 31.9% a year that IDC attributes to agentic AI-enabled applications (IDC, 2025).

$234 billion of enterprise application spending is exposed to AI agents completing tasks across systems between now and 2030, roughly 20% of enterprise SaaS spending by 2030 (Gartner, 2026).

40% of enterprise applications will include task-specific AI agents by the end of 2026, up from less than 5% in 2025 (Gartner, 2025). In Gartner’s best-case scenario, agentic AI drives about 30% of enterprise application software revenue by 2035, surpassing $450 billion.

88% of executives plan to increase AI-related budgets in the next 12 months because of agentic AI (PwC, 2025).

What AI agents are used for

26.5% of agent builders name customer service as their primary use case, the most common answer, followed by research and data analysis at 24.4% and internal workflow automation at 18% (LangChain, 2025).

IT, knowledge management, and software engineering are the functions where respondents most often report scaling agents (McKinsey, 2026). About two in ten are scaling coding agents, 31% at larger enterprises.

80% of common customer service issues will be resolved autonomously by agentic AI by 2029, in Gartner’s forecast, cutting operational costs 30% (Gartner, 2025).

Measured results and ROI from AI agents

66% of companies adopting AI agents report increased productivity, 57% cost savings, 55% faster decision-making, and 54% improved customer experience (PwC, 2025). These are executive self-reports, not audited results.

37% of respondents attribute any EBIT impact to AI use, about the same share as a year earlier, even as agent scaling grew (McKinsey, 2026).

How many AI agent projects fail or get canceled

Over 40% of agentic AI projects will be canceled by the end of 2027 because of escalating costs, unclear business value, or inadequate risk controls (Gartner, 2025). It is a prediction, not an observed rate.

About 130 of the thousands of vendors claiming agentic AI are real, by Gartner’s estimate (Gartner, 2025). It calls the rest “agent washing”.

Where the “95% of AI pilots fail” statistic comes from

The figure comes from The GenAI Divide: State of AI in Business 2025 by MIT’s Project NANDA, and it covers generative AI broadly, not agents. The report says “95% of organizations are getting zero return” and that just 5% of integrated AI pilots are “extracting millions in value.”

The sample is small: a review of over 300 publicly disclosed AI initiatives, interviews with representatives from 52 organizations, and survey responses from 153 senior leaders collected at four industry conferences (MIT Project NANDA, 2025).

The 5% applies to custom and vendor-sold enterprise tools: 60% of organizations evaluated them, 20% reached pilot, and 5% reached production. The authors state the sample may not represent the broader market.

About 67% of external vendor partnerships reached deployment, against about 33% of internally built tools, in the same sample (MIT Project NANDA, 2025).

Do companies and workers trust AI agents

27% of executives trust fully autonomous AI agents, down from 43% a year earlier (Capgemini Research Institute, 2025).

20% of executives trust AI agents with financial transactions, against 38% for data analysis (PwC, 2025).

80% of companies say their AI agents have taken unintended actions, and 23% report agents were tricked into revealing access credentials (SailPoint, 2025, 353 enterprise security and IT professionals). SailPoint sells identity security software, so read it as such.

75% of respondents are comfortable working alongside AI agents, but only 30% are comfortable being managed by one (Workday, 2025). The sample is 2,950 decision-makers and software implementation leaders, not rank-and-file staff.

How many developers use AI agents

14.1% of developers use AI agents at work daily and 9% weekly, while 37.9% do not use them and do not plan to (Stack Overflow Developer Survey, 2025, 31,877 responses).

69% of developers who use agents agree agents have increased their productivity, but only 17% agree agents improved team collaboration (Stack Overflow, 2025).

87% of developers are concerned about the accuracy of information from AI agents, and 81% about data security and privacy (Stack Overflow, 2025).

97 million+ monthly SDK downloads and more than 10,000 active public MCP servers, one year after the Model Context Protocol launched (Anthropic, 2025). Anthropic created MCP, so read it as first-party data.

15x year-over-year growth in active agents in the Microsoft 365 ecosystem, 18x in large enterprises (Microsoft Work Trend Index, 2026). This is Microsoft’s own telemetry.

Where an agent pays off first for a small team

Across these surveys, agents stick in narrow, repeated work with a person still in the loop. Email, scheduling, and follow-up fit that description. Carly is an AI agent that handles those three and runs workflows across the tools a team already uses. Carly connects to thousands of apps. See what AI agents are and the best AI agent platforms.

"Before Carly, I relied on a Calendly link, but the whole process felt impersonal and not very professional. Carly changed that by handling all the back-and-forth, so I'm no longer stuck in endless email threads trying to line up schedules.

Now Carly reaches out to candidates, shares my real-time availability, lets them pick a slot, then sends a Zoom link and drops it straight into my calendar. She sends reminders to both of us before each call, which has significantly reduced no-shows and last-minute confusion.

On top of scheduling, Carly acts like a full executive assistant, sending me my schedule the night before so I can prepare for each call. It reminds me of the old x.ai assistant, but Carly is noticeably smarter, faster, and better suited to my healthcare recruitment business."
