How to Change Your LinkedIn URL (2026)

A custom LinkedIn URL — linkedin.com/in/yourname instead of a string of random numbers — looks far better on a resume, email signature, or business card. Changing it takes about a minute.

1. Change Your URL (Desktop)

  1. Go to your profile.
  2. In the top-right, click Edit public profile & URL.
  3. On the right under Edit your custom URL, click the pencil icon.
  4. Type your new handle after linkedin.com/in/.
  5. Click Save.

Pick something clean: your full name, or name + profession if your name is taken (e.g., janedoe-design).

2. Change It on Mobile

  1. Tap your photo > View Profile.
  2. Tap the Settings gear or the Contact info / Edit controls, then Edit public profile & URL.
  3. Edit the custom URL and Save.

(On some app versions you’ll be routed to the mobile web view to finish — that’s normal.)

3. Rules for Custom URLs

  • 3–100 characters, letters and numbers only — no spaces or special characters.
  • Must be unique; taken handles are rejected.
  • You can change it repeatedly, but your old URL stops working once changed, so update your links.

4. Update Your URL Everywhere

After changing it, refresh the link in your resume, email signature, portfolio, and business cards — the previous URL now 404s for anyone who saved it.

5. Troubleshooting

My preferred handle is taken

Add a middle initial, profession, or location (janedoe-pm, janedoela). LinkedIn won’t free up an in-use handle.

The change won’t save

Remove spaces and special characters — only letters and numbers are allowed. Also confirm it’s between 3 and 100 characters.

That’s expected. Once you customize the URL, the prior address no longer resolves. Replace it in your saved locations.

"Before Carly, I relied on a Calendly link, but the whole process felt impersonal and not very professional. Carly changed that by handling all the back-and-forth, so I'm no longer stuck in endless email threads trying to line up schedules.

Now Carly reaches out to candidates, shares my real-time availability, lets them pick a slot, then sends a Zoom link and drops it straight into my calendar. She sends reminders to both of us before each call, which has significantly reduced no-shows and last-minute confusion.

On top of scheduling, Carly acts like a full executive assistant, sending me my schedule the night before so I can prepare for each call. It reminds me of the old x.ai assistant, but Carly is noticeably smarter, faster, and better suited to my healthcare recruitment business."
