LLM Market Share 2026: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and More

55.5% of worldwide visits to generative AI websites went to ChatGPT in August 2026, down from 73.3% a year earlier, with Gemini at 25.6% and Claude at 9.3% (Similarweb, 2026). In enterprise API usage the order flips: 40% goes to Anthropic, 27% to OpenAI and 21% to Google (Menlo Ventures, 2025). On OpenRouter, the API marketplace developers use to switch between models, 24.4% of text requests went to DeepSeek in the week of September 21, 2026, ahead of Google and OpenAI (OpenRouter, 2026).

Three measures, three leaders. “LLM market share” can mean share of web visits, users, business spend or developer traffic, and each crowns a different company. Below is the latest figure for each, its date and what it counts.

All columns come from the same September 7 update.

64.5% was ChatGPT’s share on January 2, 2026, when it dropped below 65% and Gemini passed 20% (21.5%) (Similarweb, 2026). Three months before the August reading ChatGPT was at 52.7%, and it has regained about three points since.

Similarweb counts visits to each chatbot’s website on desktop and mobile browsers. App use is not included, which undercounts Gemini on Android, and Meta AI, which lives inside WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook, is not among the chatbots in the update.

80.5% of the visits that AI chatbots sent to other websites in September 2026 came from ChatGPT, with Gemini at 10.9%, Perplexity 5.8%, Copilot 1.8% and Claude about 1% (StatCounter, 2026). StatCounter counts referrals: page views on sites running its tracker that arrive from a chatbot link. It shows which chatbot sends people onward, not which one people chat with most.

How many people use ChatGPT, Gemini, Meta AI, Copilot, Grok and Claude

Meta AIMore than 1 billionMonthly actives across Meta’s appsMay 2025
Gemini appMore than 1 billionMonthly active usersAug 2026
Microsoft Copilot familyMore than 150 millionMonthly active users, all CopilotsOct 2025
GrokAbout 117 millionMonthly users of Grok’s AI featuresMarch 31, 2026

1.2 billion weekly users is the figure OpenAI gave at DevDay on September 29, 2026 (OpenAI, 2026), up from 900 million in February 2026. The full timeline is in ChatGPT statistics.

More than 1 billion monthly users on the Gemini app as of August 11, 2026 (Google, 2026), after 950 million in the second quarter of 2026 (Alphabet, July 2026), up from more than 750 million in the fourth quarter of 2025 (Alphabet, February 2026). A monthly count always exceeds a weekly one for the same product, so the gap to ChatGPT is wider than it looks. The two go head to head in Gemini vs ChatGPT.

More than 1 billion monthly actives for Meta AI, the figure Mark Zuckerberg gave at Meta’s May 2025 shareholder meeting (CNBC, 2025) and repeated on the July 2025 earnings call. It counts anyone who used Meta AI inside WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook or Messenger. Neither of Meta’s 2026 earnings calls gave a new count.

More than 150 million monthly active users across Microsoft’s “family of Copilots,” spanning information work, coding, security, science, health and consumer (Microsoft, October 2025). In July 2026 Microsoft reported over 30 million paid Microsoft 365 Copilot seats and 50 million GitHub Copilot users (Microsoft, 2026).

About 117 million monthly users used Grok’s AI features as of March 31, 2026, out of roughly 550 million monthly users across Grok and X, according to SpaceX’s IPO filing (SEC, May 2026).

Claude has no Anthropic-published user count. Sensor Tower estimated 245 million monthly users across apps and web in May 2026, behind ChatGPT (over 1.1 billion) and Gemini (662 million), putting the global audience split at 46.4% ChatGPT, 27.7% Gemini and 10.3% Claude (TechCrunch, June 2026). Claude’s audience grew 452% year over year, and its U.S. share rose from 4.4% to nearly 14% (Sensor Tower, June 2026). More in Claude statistics.

44% of U.S. adults say they use ChatGPT, against 24% for Gemini, 17% for Copilot, 14% for Meta AI, 8% for Grok and 6% for Claude, in a survey conducted February 17 to 23, 2026 (Pew Research Center, 2026). Overall, 49% of U.S. adults use an AI chatbot.

Below 50%: ChatGPT’s share of unique AI assistant users across mobile apps and web fell under half for the first time in March 2026, by Sensor Tower’s “True Audience” measure (Sensor Tower, 2026).

Enterprise LLM market share: Anthropic vs OpenAI vs Google

40% of enterprise LLM API usage went to Anthropic in late 2025, against 27% for OpenAI and 21% for Google. Together the three hold 88% (Menlo Ventures, 2025). Menlo surveyed 495 U.S. enterprise AI decision-makers from November 7 to 25, 2025, who reported the share of their AI workloads running on each model, weighted by the size of each application. Menlo Ventures is an Anthropic investor, and the report flags it as a portfolio company.

Anthropic12%24%32%40%
OpenAI50%34%25%27%

Sources: Menlo Ventures’ 2024 report, its mid-2025 update (a survey of 150 technical leaders, June 30 to July 10, 2025, which put Meta’s Llama at 9% and DeepSeek at 1%) and the December 2025 report. Google’s 2024 share isn’t given in the 2024 report’s text.

54% of enterprise coding workloads ran on Anthropic models in late 2025, up from 42% six months earlier, against 21% for OpenAI (Menlo Ventures, 2025). Menlo attributes Anthropic’s overall lead to coding, which it calls generative AI’s first “killer use case.” The model lineup behind that lead is in Claude models explained.

11% of enterprise LLM usage went to open-weight models in late 2025, down from 19% a year earlier, and Chinese open models accounted for about 1% (Menlo Ventures, 2025).

43.8% of U.S. businesses in the Ramp AI Index paid Anthropic for subscriptions or tokens in August 2026, against 39.8% for OpenAI (Ramp, September 2026). Ramp counts businesses with a payment on its corporate card and bill-pay platform, more than 70,000 U.S. firms, not dollars spent. Anthropic first passed OpenAI in the May 2026 release, 34.4% to 32.3% (Ara Kharazian, Ramp, 2026).

56.1% of businesses in Ramp’s sample paid for any AI product in August 2026 (Ramp AI Index, 2026). Since 43.8% plus 39.8% is 83.6%, at least 27% of businesses in the sample must be paying both Anthropic and OpenAI. For teams running more than one assistant, Carly works inside both of the top two, as the Carly plugin in ChatGPT and the Carly connector in Claude, and handles email and calendar work across all of your Google and Microsoft accounts.

Developer and API market share

24.4% of text requests on OpenRouter in the week beginning September 21, 2026 went to DeepSeek models (OpenRouter, 2026).

OpenRouter’s market share chart counts requests, not tokens or spend, so cheap high-volume models rank high. It covers only traffic routed through OpenRouter, and more than half of that usage comes from outside the U.S. (OpenRouter State of AI, December 2025).

More than 60% of programming-related spend on OpenRouter went to Anthropic’s Claude models for most of the year studied, before dipping below 60% in the week of November 17, 2025 (OpenRouter State of AI, 2025). On the platform where Anthropic now ranks seventh by requests, it led coding spend through 2025.

About 13% of weekly token volume on OpenRouter went to Chinese open-weight models on average over the year studied, reaching nearly 30% in some weeks (OpenRouter State of AI, 2025).

81.4% of developers in Stack Overflow’s 2025 survey used OpenAI’s GPT models for development work in the past year. 42.8% used Claude Sonnet, 35.3% Gemini Flash, 23.3% DeepSeek Reasoning, 17.8% Meta Llama and 11.1% Grok (Stack Overflow Developer Survey, 2025).

Mobile AI app market share

1 billion monthly active users on mobile made ChatGPT the fastest app ever to reach that mark, in May 2026, ahead of TikTok, YouTube and Instagram (Sensor Tower, 2026).

Nearly 90% of time spent in AI assistant apps in the first quarter of 2026 went to ChatGPT, Gemini and DeepSeek (Sensor Tower, 2026).

$301 million in worldwide App Store and Google Play consumer spend went to ChatGPT in April 2026, against $138 million for Gemini, Claude, Grok, Copilot and Perplexity combined (Appfigures, May 2026). On downloads the picture differs: ChatGPT’s rivals combined have out-downloaded it every month since September 2025.

730,000 downloads in about five days after its September 8, 2026 launch carried Meta’s new Muse agent app past ChatGPT as the top free iPhone app in the U.S. on September 18, according to Sensor Tower (CNBC, 2026).

AI search market share

0.4% of referral traffic to websites came from AI chatbots in September 2026, against 91% from search engines and 8.6% from social media (StatCounter, 2026). Measured by clicks sent onward, chatbots are still a sliver of search. Chatbots answer many questions without sending a click, though, so this understates how often people ask them instead of searching.

99.6% of the referrals sent by Google and ChatGPT combined came from Google in September 2026 (StatCounter, 2026).

Why the LLM market share numbers disagree

  • Traffic is not users. Similarweb counts website visits: heavy users count many times, app use not at all.
  • Weekly is not monthly. OpenAI reports weekly users. Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft and SpaceX report monthly, which is always the larger number.
  • Each company defines “user.” Meta counts Meta AI use in any of its apps, and Microsoft bundles every Copilot.
  • Usage is not spend. Consumer share follows free chat. Menlo and Ramp follow paying businesses, where coding drives the spend and Anthropic leads.
  • Requests are not dollars. OpenRouter’s request share rewards cheap, high-volume models, while its coding-spend data favored Anthropic.
  • Region and sample. Pew, Menlo and Ramp are U.S.-only. Similarweb, StatCounter and OpenRouter are worldwide.
  • Who publishes it. Menlo Ventures has invested in both Anthropic and OpenRouter, and flags both as portfolio companies in its report.

These circulate on statistics sites. Some have no primary source we could find; others are real numbers stripped of their date or method. Either way, they shouldn’t be cited as written.

  • “Claude has 18.9 million monthly active users.” The trail ends at a Backlinko roundup that names no measurement behind it, and sites repeating it date it to early 2025. We found no Anthropic statement of a Claude user count.
  • “Meta AI has 1.5 billion monthly users.” Meta’s last stated figure is “more than 1 billion” (July 2025), and neither 2026 earnings call gave a new one.
  • “Microsoft Copilot has 218 million active users.” We found no Microsoft source. The latest Microsoft figure is more than 150 million monthly users across all Copilots (October 2025).
  • “Anthropic holds 54% of enterprise coding as of mid-2026.” The 54% is real, but it is Menlo’s late-2025 estimate being re-dated.
  • “ChatGPT has 80% market share.” Real, but it is StatCounter’s referral measure. By website visits, Similarweb puts ChatGPT at 55.5% (August 2026).

"Before Carly, I relied on a Calendly link, but the whole process felt impersonal and not very professional. Carly changed that by handling all the back-and-forth, so I'm no longer stuck in endless email threads trying to line up schedules.

Now Carly reaches out to candidates, shares my real-time availability, lets them pick a slot, then sends a Zoom link and drops it straight into my calendar. She sends reminders to both of us before each call, which has significantly reduced no-shows and last-minute confusion.

On top of scheduling, Carly acts like a full executive assistant, sending me my schedule the night before so I can prepare for each call. It reminds me of the old x.ai assistant, but Carly is noticeably smarter, faster, and better suited to my healthcare recruitment business."
