Smokeball Pricing: Four Plans, No Published Price
Smokeball publishes no prices at all. Every one of its four plans, Bill, Boost, Grow and Prosper+, carries a “Get pricing” button where a number would go, and the comparison table underneath does the same thing.
What Smokeball does tell you is the formula. Pricing depends on the number of users at your firm, the plan you select, your contract term, and any optional products or services. Three of those four are what you would expect. The fourth is the one worth reading twice.
Contract term is part of the quote
Most software in this category is sold monthly or annually, and the annual option comes with a published discount. Smokeball naming contract term as an input to the quote means the length of your commitment is negotiated alongside the price, not chosen from a toggle.
Practically, that means two firms of identical size can be paying different rates for the same plan, and the quote you are given reflects how long you agreed to stay. Ask what the rate looks like at each term before you sign anything.
What the four plans actually are
Bill is the billing product on its own: invoicing, time and expense tracking, online payments, trust accounting and reporting, and accounting integrations. It is not case management.
Boost is where case management starts, and it is fully browser based. Client and matter management, task and calendar management, Microsoft 365 Outlook, calendar and Word integration, a client portal, automated letterhead templates, eSignature and eFiling.
Grow adds the native desktop application, and Smokeball describes it as designed for firms with three or more staff who collaborate on matters. It brings practice area templates and calculators, advanced document automation, automated forms, email management, and text document search at an advanced level rather than basic.
Prosper+ is the operations tier: firm insights reporting, lead management, inquiry intake, advanced matter intake, custom workflows and workflow templates, staff activity reporting and profitability reporting.
The add-ons that become inclusions
Four things move between add-on and included depending on tier, and they are the ones most likely to change your bill.
| Bill | Boost | Grow | Prosper+ | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AutoTime (automatic time tracking) | no | no | add-on | included |
| Intake | no | add-on | add-on | included |
| Workflows | no | no | add-on | included |
| Archie AI | no | add-on | add-on | add-on |
Time tracking is manual on Bill, Boost and Grow. AutoTime, the automatic capture Smokeball is known for, is only included on Prosper+. If automatic time tracking is the reason you are looking at Smokeball, you are looking at the top plan or at an add-on line on your quote.
Archie, the AI assistant, is an add-on on every tier including Prosper+. It never comes bundled.
Where “fees apply” shows up
The comparison table marks several capabilities as carrying their own charges on top of the subscription: email marketing, eFiling on all four plans, online payments, and trust management. Electronic signatures are unlimited but run through InfoTrack, which is a separate relationship.
So the quote you receive is the subscription. Filing fees, payment processing and marketing sends sit outside it.
What a quote-only price means for a small firm
Smokeball serves 34,000+ legal professionals and the depth is real, particularly the document automation and the practice area templates. But a firm comparing options cannot put Smokeball in a spreadsheet next to a competitor without booking a call first, and the plan you need is often further up the ladder than the feature list suggests, because AutoTime and Workflows live at the top.
The work that sits before the matter opens
Practice management systems are built around the matter. They are very good at everything that happens once a file exists, and structurally uninterested in everything that happens before it does.
The prospective client who calls on a Thursday afternoon. The consultation that takes six emails to schedule around two calendars. The referral that goes cold because nobody replied for three days. None of that is billable, all of it is where firms lose work, and on the Smokeball ladder the answer is Prosper+ with intake, or an Archie add-on line.
Carly is priced for that bottleneck specifically. Zapier-style workflows are free, so a rule like “when an enquiry arrives, check the calendar and offer three consultation times” costs nothing to run no matter which plan your firm is on. Booking pages and connected calendars are unlimited, so each attorney hands out a link instead of trading availability. Every Gmail and Outlook account connects as its own authorized connection, so replies come from the address the client already knows. The agent that reads the thread, drafts the reply and books the consultation starts at $35 a month rather than per seat, and Carly connects to thousands of apps, so the matter, the ledger and the documents stay in Smokeball where they belong.

See what people say
"Before Carly, I relied on a Calendly link, but the whole process felt impersonal and not very professional. Carly changed that by handling all the back-and-forth, so I'm no longer stuck in endless email threads trying to line up schedules.
Now Carly reaches out to candidates, shares my real-time availability, lets them pick a slot, then sends a Zoom link and drops it straight into my calendar. She sends reminders to both of us before each call, which has significantly reduced no-shows and last-minute confusion.
On top of scheduling, Carly acts like a full executive assistant, sending me my schedule the night before so I can prepare for each call. It reminds me of the old x.ai assistant, but Carly is noticeably smarter, faster, and better suited to my healthcare recruitment business."
