Why Did My ChatGPT Scheduled Task Pause?
A ChatGPT Scheduled Task can pause because it was inactive, needs action from you, lost its associated chat, or cannot be resumed under your plan’s active-task limit. Open the task from the Scheduled page, inspect its last run, resolve the underlying request, and then select Resume.
Do not assume every pause is a bug. Pausing is also how ChatGPT prevents an unattended task from repeatedly running when it cannot proceed.
The four common reasons a task pauses
1. ChatGPT considers the task inactive
OpenAI says unattended tasks may automatically pause after a period of inactivity. It does not publish one universal inactivity period, so there is no reliable countdown to plan around.
If you still want the task, open it, review the recent results, and resume it. If the task must run indefinitely without engagement, Scheduled Tasks may not be the right automation system.
2. The task needs an action from you
A scheduled run may reach a point where it needs:
- approval for a write action;
- a renewed app sign-in;
- access that a workspace administrator has not enabled;
- clarification the task prompt did not provide;
- confirmation before sending, deleting, editing, or purchasing.
Open the last run and complete the requested action. Then simplify the prompt so the next run does not hit the same decision point.
3. You deleted the chat associated with the task
Deleting a conversation associated with a Scheduled Task automatically pauses that task. This can be confusing because deleting the task does not necessarily delete its chat, but deleting its chat changes the task.
Open Scheduled, find the paused task, and decide whether to resume it or recreate it from a clean conversation. OpenAI documents this behavior in its Scheduled Tasks FAQ.
4. You reached the active-task limit
Active-task limits vary by ChatGPT plan. At the limit, ChatGPT cannot create a new task or resume a paused one until another active task completes, is paused, or is deleted.
Review the whole Scheduled list instead of repeatedly pressing Resume. Remove obsolete one-time reminders and duplicate monitoring tasks first.
How to resume the task
- Open Scheduled in the ChatGPT sidebar.
- Select the paused task.
- Read the most recent run and any action request.
- Fix an expired app connection or missing permission.
- Confirm that your active-task allowance has space.
- Select Resume.
- Check the displayed next-run time and timezone.
After resuming, schedule one near-term test or wait for the next ordinary run. If it pauses again for the same reason, change the workflow rather than continuing the resume loop.
Rewrite prompts that pause for clarification
An unattended task should contain all safe choices it needs.
Likely to stop:
Check my inbox every morning and handle anything important.
“Important” and “handle” are undefined. ChatGPT may need to ask what counts and whether it can change anything.
More reliable:
Every weekday at 8:00 AM America/New_York, use the connected Gmail app to find unread messages received in the previous 24 hours from contacts at example.com. Return sender, subject, received time, and a one-sentence summary. Do not send, move, label, delete, or modify messages.
That version fixes the time window, source, output, and permission boundary.
Why write actions are especially likely to interrupt automation
A task that only reads and reports can usually finish without asking you anything. A task that sends an email, updates a CRM record, deletes a file, or changes a calendar may require approval. If no one is present to approve it, the task cannot deliver a genuinely unattended workflow.
Split the job if necessary:
- use Scheduled Tasks to produce a review queue;
- complete approved actions manually; or
- move the end-to-end workflow to an automation system designed to execute predefined actions.
