ChatGPT Scheduled Tasks Not Working, Missing, or Failing?
When a ChatGPT Scheduled Task stops working, check the Scheduled page before recreating it. The task may be paused, attached to a deleted chat, waiting for an action, blocked by your active-task limit, or failing only when it tries to use an unavailable app. If the task exists and is active, run the same prompt manually to separate a scheduling problem from a prompt or connector problem.
Recent user reports describe tasks disappearing from the interface, running without a visible history, arriving late, or failing without the expected notification. Those symptoms look similar but have different fixes.
1. Find the task on the Scheduled page
Open ChatGPT and select Scheduled from the sidebar. The current Scheduled page is the source of truth for active, paused, and completed tasks.
Check:
- whether the task still exists;
- whether its status is active or paused;
- its next scheduled run;
- the conversation associated with it;
- its recent output or failure message.
If you created the task from another device, make sure both devices are signed into the same ChatGPT account and workspace. Users have reported temporary cross-device sync problems, so also check the web version before concluding the task was deleted.
2. Resume a paused task—and check why it paused
OpenAI says a task may pause when it has been inactive, needs additional action from you, or loses its associated conversation. Deleting the chat associated with a task automatically pauses the task. If the task pauses again after you resume it, open the last run. Look for a request for approval, sign-in, clarification, or permission that an unattended task cannot complete.

3. Run the exact task prompt manually
Copy the task instructions into a normal ChatGPT conversation and run them once.
- If the manual run fails too, fix the prompt, app connection, or requested action.
- If the manual run succeeds but the scheduled run fails, the scheduled runtime lacks something the live conversation has.
- If the task uses an app, test a read-only request first.
- If the task needs approval to send or change data, it is not truly unattended.
This is the fastest way to determine whether the scheduler itself is the problem.
4. Remove unsupported or unavailable inputs
Scheduled Tasks do not support every ChatGPT feature. OpenAI currently calls out Voice chats and GPTs as unsupported, and a task created inside a project cannot access that project’s files.
Rewrite the task so every required input is available when it runs:
Fragile:
Every morning, use the spreadsheet I uploaded to this project and update the custom GPT’s report.
Testable:
Every morning, check the connected app for records created in the previous 24 hours and send me a text summary with source links.

5. Check notifications separately from execution
A task can run successfully while its push or email notification fails.
- Open the task’s history on the Scheduled page.
- Check whether a result exists at the expected time.
- Verify ChatGPT notification settings.
- Verify operating-system notification permission for the app or browser.
- Check spam or filtered email if you expect email notifications.
If a result exists, do not rebuild the task—the scheduling worked. Fix the notification path.
6. Make the schedule and timezone explicit
Avoid “tomorrow morning” or “every afternoon” while troubleshooting. Specify the time, days, and timezone:
Run every weekday at 8:00 AM America/New_York. Include the run time and timezone at the top of every result.

7. Check whether ChatGPT is having an incident
Before repeatedly deleting and rebuilding a task, check OpenAI Status for a current ChatGPT or app incident. A server-side problem may resolve without any change to your task.
A clean test task
Create a one-time task five or ten minutes in the future:
At 2:40 PM America/New_York today, send me a notification containing exactly: “Scheduled Task test completed.” Do not use apps, files, GPTs, or web search.
If that works, add one dependency at a time: web search, then a connected app, then the real prompt. The first addition that breaks identifies the failing layer.
