Workday AI Agents: Every Agent and What Autopilot Means
Workday’s AI agents are software workers built into its HR and finance apps. The newest ones run on “autopilot”: instead of waiting for someone to ask, they watch Workday data, do the routine work, and bring a person in to approve. Workday announced autopilot modes for four agents (Talent Acquisition, Payroll, Accounting and Deployment) at Workday Rising on October 13, 2026. Sana, Workday’s AI assistant, coordinates all of them, so employees never have to pick an agent by name.
Only the Talent Acquisition autopilot is in customers’ hands today, and only for early adopters. Here is every agent, what it does, how Workday controls and prices them, and what to use if your company doesn’t run Workday.
Copilot vs autopilot at Workday
A copilot waits. You log in, ask, and it helps. An autopilot starts on its own when something changes, such as a new requisition, a signed contract or a pay record, does the routine part, and stops for a person when a decision is needed.
“Our agents work like autopilots – they get the work done on their own,” said Joel Hellermark, Workday’s chief AI officer, in the autopilot announcement. Workday’s pitch for why that is safe in HR and finance comes from product chief Gerrit Kazmaier: “Probabilistic AI is great at guessing, but in payroll and finance, a good guess isn’t good enough.” Workday’s answer is to run agents inside its existing business processes, which it calls “lawful by design.”
The four autopilot agents
Talent Acquisition Agent
- Monitors open roles and flags the ones on track or at risk of missing their fill date.
- Finds qualified candidates as soon as a job is posted and shows recruiters their strengths and gaps.
- When a pipeline is thin, sends the recruiter sourcing ideas and draft outreach in tools like Slack. Outreach goes to a candidate only after the recruiter approves it.
- Coordinates interview scheduling, briefs interviewers and drafts feedback for review.
- Saves each recruiter’s preferences, such as interview timing or format, to memory.
It works with Workday Recruiting, HiredScore, Paradox and connected sourcing providers. Workday says it will cut time to fill “from weeks to days.” Availability: early adopters now; general availability planned for early 2027.
Payroll Agent
Checks payroll continuously and flags missing or incorrect pay data before payroll runs. Workday’s example: it audits retroactive adjustments, flags anything outside set limits, and drafts the employee messages for the payroll team to review. Availability: autopilot for early adopters in early 2027.
Accounting Agent
When a contract is signed, it pulls the key terms, prepares the accounting entries, recommends revenue recognition and billing schedules, and reminds teams of payment deadlines. It also tests transactions in the background all year to keep the books audit-ready. Availability: autopilot for early adopters in early 2027.
Deployment Agent
Studies how a customer uses Workday, finds high-impact features it hasn’t switched on, projects the effect, and prepares a setup and testing plan for approval. It also flags new laws or policies that could affect a customer’s configuration. Workday says nearly 5,000 customers have activated it since it was announced in September 2025. Availability: autopilot for early adopters in early 2027.
Workday’s other AI agents
Workday has been adding agents since 2024. These were named in its September 2025 announcement, alongside the Sana agents added since.

|---|---|
| Sana Self-Service Agent | Handles everyday pay, time and absence questions and requests, with 300+ skills |
| Sana Concierge | Resolves HR and IT requests like password resets, access, leave, onboarding and offboarding |
| Case Agent | Handles admin work to close HR cases faster |
| Business Process Copilot Agent | Sets up and configures new business processes |
| Performance Agent | Gathers performance data from across apps for reviews |
| Job Architecture Agent | Builds and maintains job ladders |
| Employee Sentiment Agent | Analyzes employee feedback for people leaders |
| Frontline Agent | Cuts the time spent on staffing changes |
| Document Intelligence for Contingent Labor Agent | Drafts statements of work and tracks contract obligations |
| Contract Intelligence Agent | Shortens contract execution |
| Financial Audit Agent | Collects audit evidence and builds reports |
| Financial Close Agent | Automates and tracks the financial close |
| Financial Test Agent | Tests financials for fraud and compliance issues |
| Cost & Profitability Agent | Sets cost allocation rules in plain language |
| Planning Agent | Speeds up data exploration for planning |
Workday also has education agents for academic requirements and student administration.
Sana decides which agent does the work
Employees don’t open the Payroll Agent or the Case Agent. They ask Sana, now the Workday Home screen, and Sana hands the job to the right agents behind the scenes, then brings people in for review, approval or judgment. “Users shouldn’t have to decide which agent to use,” Hellermark said.
Constellation Research analyst Holger Mueller described the shift this way: “Agents are moving from singles pickleball – one human and one agent – to an orchestra phase.”
How Workday keeps agents in bounds
- They inherit your rules. Agents follow each company’s existing policies, permissions and approval chains from day one.
- You choose the autonomy. Customers decide which tasks run automatically, which actions an agent can take alone, which need review, and when a person makes the final call.
- Everything is logged. Each action records what the agent did, what information it used and who approved it.
- You set the pace. Companies choose how often agents run, which also controls cost.
- More is coming. Grounded Reasoning, a policy check before an agent acts, reaches early access in early 2027, and Workday’s planned purchase of C1.ai would govern what agents can access in other systems.
Building your own Workday agents
At Rising, Workday made its agent platform “headless,” so agents can work in Workday without anyone logging in.
- Custom Agents and Developer Agent let teams describe agents in Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or the Workday Developer Site.
- Agent-Ready Tools expose Workday over MCP. Reworked counts 275 read tools and 54 write or delete tools.
- Model choice covers Claude, Gemini, Llama, Mistral, GPT and NVIDIA Nemotron, with LangChain supported.
These are generally available through Workday Extend AI.
What Workday’s AI agents cost
Workday prices its AI with Flex Credits, one credit that covers agents, Data Cloud and Sana. Every subscription includes an annual allotment, and customers buy more as they use more. Agents are metered when they complete an action, not per question or token. Workday also offers complimentary credits to try agents in production, and testing in non-production is free.
What isn’t public is the rate card. None of the Rising releases says how many credits an autopilot uses when it runs in the background all week, so your account team is the only source for a real number.
What’s still unproven
- No autopilot results yet. Reworked notes there is no customer result and no figure for how often recruiters send drafts back, and adds: “if nobody ever sends anything back, the approval isn’t adding much.”
- Approval isn’t accuracy. Analyst Melody Brue told CIO that “an agent can be authorized and still make the wrong call,” so someone has to own approvals and audit trails.
- Most of it is next year. Three of the four autopilots, Concierge’s general availability and Grounded Reasoning are all 2027.
An AI recruiting agent if you don’t run Workday
The Talent Acquisition Agent needs Workday Recruiting and reaches general availability in early 2027. A recruiter at a 20-person agency or a growing startup has the same loop today: candidates emailing, interviews to schedule across busy calendars, follow-ups that slip.
Carly runs that loop on the tools you already have:
- A recruiting agent with its own inbox. Give it a name and an email address. Candidates write to it, and it answers questions, checks applications against your requirements, and books qualified people for a screen. Our guide to AI agents for recruiters walks through the setup.
- Interview scheduling across every calendar. It finds time across interviewers’ Google Calendar and Outlook calendars, sends the invite and handles reschedules.
- Draft, then approve. Set approval steps so outreach waits for you, the same pattern as Workday’s recruiter approval.
- It keeps your systems current. Resumes land in your shared drive, and candidate records update in Ashby, Lever or Workable, with a heads-up in Slack.
- It answers the phone. Candidates who call or text your line get a reply and a booked slot.
Carly connects to thousands of apps. Free Zapier-style workflows; AI agents from $35/month. Get started with Carly, or see how to build an AI recruiter.

"Before Carly, I relied on a Calendly link, but the whole process felt impersonal and not very professional. Carly changed that by handling all the back-and-forth, so I'm no longer stuck in endless email threads trying to line up schedules.
Now Carly reaches out to candidates, shares my real-time availability, lets them pick a slot, then sends a Zoom link and drops it straight into my calendar. She sends reminders to both of us before each call, which has significantly reduced no-shows and last-minute confusion.
On top of scheduling, Carly acts like a full executive assistant, sending me my schedule the night before so I can prepare for each call. It reminds me of the old x.ai assistant, but Carly is noticeably smarter, faster, and better suited to my healthcare recruitment business."
