Advertising Statistics 2026: Spend, Channels, Costs & AI
Global advertising revenue is on track to reach $1.3 trillion in 2026, up 8.9% on the year. In the US, digital advertising alone brought in $294.6 billion in 2025, and social media ad revenue now edges out search. The most repeated number in the field, that people see somewhere between 3,000 and 10,000 ads a day, has no study behind it: the researchers who actually counted found 76 a day in 1968 and a few hundred in 2014. Here are the advertising statistics worth knowing in 2026, each sourced inline with the year noted.
Nobody sees 10,000 ads a day
3,000, 5,000 and 10,000 ads a day are the three figures that dominate search results on the question, and none of them traces back to a count (The Drum, 2023). The trail leads to CBS segments in 2005 and 2006 and a 2007 New York Times story, all crediting J. Walker Smith, then president of the research firm Yankelovich, and his 2005 book Coming to Concurrence.
Smith says he never claimed it. “Our intention was not to endorse any particular number,” he told The Drum. “Yes, that 5,000 figure went viral from me. But I agree with the 4A’s.” The American Association of Advertising Agencies had called the numbers “unsubstantiated” in a 2007 paper reviewing ad exposure research back to the 1950s (The Drum, 2023).
76 ads a day is what Harvard professors Raymond Bauer and Stephen Greyser found in 1968, when 750 people manually counted their ad exposures across magazines, newspapers, radio and TV (The Drum, 2023). Greyser told The Drum the thousands-range figures were “conversational items” that had taken on “a mythic character.”
98.5 ads a day came from a 2007 replication of the same method by Mark Blackwell, a master’s student at the University of Nebraska Omaha (The Drum, 2023).
362 ad exposures a day, of which 153 were noted, is the 2014 estimate from Ed Papazian of Media Dynamics, built from media consumption data and average ad loads per medium (The Drum, 2023).
10,000 a day works out to an ad every six seconds across 16 waking hours. When The Drum’s intelligence editor logged every ad spotted over one day in 2022, the total was 93, and none of them could be recalled afterward (The Drum, 2023).
”Half my advertising is wasted” has no verified author
There is no record of John Wanamaker saying “half the money I spend on advertising is wasted.” The earliest attribution Quote Investigator found is a 1919 speech by the Reverend Roy L. Smith at a Bible conference in Indiana, and it found no written or spoken instance from Wanamaker himself (Quote Investigator, 2022).
A partial match appeared in the trade journal Printers’ Ink in 1890. Lord Leverhulme’s son credited his father with the line in 1931, and David Ogilvy used it in 1963 while disclaiming credit (Quote Investigator, 2022). Quote Investigator still rates Wanamaker the leading candidate, on the strength of that 1919 attribution.
Global ad revenue is heading for $1.3 trillion in 2026
$1.3 trillion is WPP Media’s forecast for global advertising revenue in 2026, excluding US political ads, which would be growth of 8.9% (WPP Media This Year Next Year, 2026). In December 2025 it had forecast 7.1%. The June 2026 midyear update raised the number, crediting “an AI investment cycle of historic scale.”
Advertising’s share of global GDP is the highest since 1999, past the dot-com peak of 2000 (WPP Media, 2026).
Content-driven advertising is forecast at $720.2 billion in 2026, up 8.2% (WPP Media, 2026). Inside that total, gaming, streaming TV and social are still growing while linear TV and audio have plateaued.
US digital ad revenue reached $294.6 billion in 2025
$294.6 billion was spent on US internet advertising in 2025, up 13.9% in a year with no Olympics, World Cup or national election to lift it (IAB Internet Advertising Revenue Report, conducted by PwC, 2026).
| Channel | 2025 US revenue | Growth vs 2024 |

| Display | $81.6B | 9.8% |
| Digital video | $78.0B | 25.4% |
| Commerce media | $63.4B | 18.0% |
| Podcast | $2.9B | 17.6% |

Social media ad revenue grew by $29 billion in one year, to $117.7 billion (IAB, 2026). That puts it just above search in IAB’s table, although IAB’s own release still describes search as holding the largest share.
Search growth slowed to 11%, from 15.9% in 2024, even with AI search counted in (IAB, 2026).
Programmatic ad revenue rose 20.5% to $162.4 billion (IAB, 2026).
Creator advertising reached $37 billion in 2025 and is projected to hit $44 billion in 2026 (IAB, 2026). The social side of that market is broken down in social media statistics.
Three companies take most of the money
Alphabet, Meta and Amazon control 57.6% of the global ad market outside China, and no traditional media owner makes the global top ten (WPP Media, 2026).
Meta’s advertising revenue was $196.2 billion in 2025, up 22% from $160.6 billion (Meta fourth quarter and full year 2025 results, 2026). Ad impressions rose 12% and the average price per ad rose 9%.
Google advertising brought in $82.3 billion in the fourth quarter of 2025 alone, up from $72.5 billion a year earlier (Alphabet Q4 2025 earnings release, 2026). Search & other made up $63.1 billion of that quarter, and YouTube ads $11.4 billion.
Digital video passes $80 billion, and buyers doubt where CTV ads run
US digital video ad spend is projected to pass $80 billion in 2026, up 11%, nearly 20% faster than the total ad market (IAB Digital Video Ad Spend & Strategy Report, 2026). Digital is expected to take more than 60% of total TV and video ad spend for the first time.
Social video (13% growth) is outpacing CTV (11%) for the first time (IAB, 2026).
43% of buyers have “somewhat to no confidence” in the quality of the CTV inventory they buy, even through the most trusted methods: direct, programmatic guaranteed and self-serve (IAB Digital Video Ad Spend & Strategy Full Report, 2026). That rises to 55% for private marketplaces and 67% for open exchange.
93% of buyers say live content is worth more than all other video content (IAB, 2026).
AI now helps make a third of video ad assets
Nearly two in three video ad buyers use generative AI for creative, up from half in 2025 (IAB, 2026). One-third of their ad assets will use it in 2026, up from a quarter in 2025, and the share is projected to reach 43% by 2027.
21% of buyers are live with agentic AI for video campaigns, 20% are testing it and 25% plan to use it in 2026, with another 28% investigating (IAB, 2026).
Generative search ad revenue is forecast to grow from $5.1 billion in 2026 to over $100 billion by 2030, which WPP Media expects to make it “the fastest-scaling channel ever recorded” (WPP Media, 2026). More on adoption inside marketing teams is in AI marketing statistics.
What a search ad costs in 2026
These benchmarks come from thousands of Google Ads and Microsoft Ads campaigns across more than 20 industries (WordStream by LocaliQ Search Advertising Benchmarks, 2026).
$5.42 is the average cost per click across industries.
6.64% is the average click-through rate, and 8.18% is the average conversion rate.
$66.69 is the average cost per lead, and it fell for the first time in five years (LocaliQ, 2026).
Attorneys and legal services pay the most per click, at $9.87, followed by home improvement at $8.33 and dentists at $8.00. Legal also has a $131.63 cost per lead (LocaliQ, 2026).
Arts and entertainment pays the least, at $1.63 a click, and has the highest click-through rate, at 12.75% (LocaliQ, 2026). The organic side of search is covered in SEO statistics.
The most expensive airtime of the year
About $8 million per 30-second spot was NBCUniversal’s average price for Super Bowl LX in February 2026, according to the Financial Times, and the network sold a “handful” of spots for more than $10 million (TVLine, 2026).
$11.6 billion in political ad spending is projected for the 2026 midterms, a record for any cycle, ahead of the $11.2 billion spent in the 2024 presidential cycle and the $8.9 billion in the 2022 midterms (AdImpact, reported by Campaigns & Elections, 2026). AdImpact raised its estimate from $10.8 billion the previous fall.
Broadcast TV still takes the biggest share of political money, at $5.6 billion, followed by CTV at $2.7 billion, digital at $1.6 billion and cable at about $1.4 billion (AdImpact, 2026).
Paying $66.69 for a lead, then letting it wait
Ad spend buys the inquiry. It doesn’t answer it. LocaliQ counts a lead as a phone call, chat, form fill or email, and each one now costs $66.69 on average, or more than $131 in legal. Carly handles the calls, forms and emails those ads produce: it answers the business line after hours or around the clock, replies to a new inquiry from your own inbox the moment it arrives, books the meeting on the right teammate’s calendar and keeps following up until the lead answers. Carly connects to thousands of apps, so the lead can arrive through your CRM, a web form or plain email. Why the first minutes decide the outcome is in speed to lead statistics.

"Before Carly, I relied on a Calendly link, but the whole process felt impersonal and not very professional. Carly changed that by handling all the back-and-forth, so I'm no longer stuck in endless email threads trying to line up schedules.
Now Carly reaches out to candidates, shares my real-time availability, lets them pick a slot, then sends a Zoom link and drops it straight into my calendar. She sends reminders to both of us before each call, which has significantly reduced no-shows and last-minute confusion.
On top of scheduling, Carly acts like a full executive assistant, sending me my schedule the night before so I can prepare for each call. It reminds me of the old x.ai assistant, but Carly is noticeably smarter, faster, and better suited to my healthcare recruitment business."
