ChatGPT Gmail Connector Not Creating Drafts or Sending?
If ChatGPT searches Gmail repeatedly instead of creating the draft you requested, stop the run and test the connector in two separate steps: read, then write. First ask it to identify the connected Gmail address without changing anything. Then give it the recipient, subject, and complete body and ask it to create one draft—without searching the inbox.
Users have reported ChatGPT entering a Gmail-search loop even when the recipient and message were already supplied, then failing before creating or sending the email. This public report describes that exact behavior.
1. Confirm which Gmail account ChatGPT connected
Open Settings → Apps, select Gmail, and inspect the connection. If you use several Google identities, ChatGPT may be connected correctly but to the wrong inbox.
Run this read-only test:
Use Gmail to tell me the full email address of the connected account. Do not search messages or change anything.
If ChatGPT cannot identify or access the account, reconnect Gmail before troubleshooting drafts.
2. Test one harmless Gmail search
Ask for a narrow, read-only result:
Using Gmail, list the sender and subject of the newest unread email. Do not draft, send, label, move, or delete anything.
- If this fails, the Gmail connection or authorization is broken.
- If it succeeds, ChatGPT can read Gmail and the problem is specific to writing.
- If it searches the wrong inbox, reconnect the intended Google account or use a multi-account connector.
3. Create the draft without asking ChatGPT to find context
Supply the entire message so there is no reason to inspect your mailbox:
Create one Gmail draft. Do not search my inbox, contacts, Drive, or Calendar.
To: alex@example.com
Subject: Tuesday meeting
Body: Hi Alex, confirming that Tuesday at 2:00 PM works for me. Best, Sam
Do not send it.
Then open Gmail and verify the recipient, subject, body, and sending account. If this succeeds, add context retrieval only when you actually need it.
4. Ask for drafting and sending as separate actions
ChatGPT’s email flow may require approval before sending. Do not combine troubleshooting with a complex “find the thread, summarize it, write a response, attach the file, and send” request.
Use this sequence:
- Find the exact thread, read only.
- Draft the response, but do not send.
- Review the draft in ChatGPT or Gmail.
- Approve one send.

5. Reconnect Gmail completely
If searches work intermittently or ChatGPT suddenly claims it has no Gmail access:
- Disconnect Gmail in ChatGPT.
- Open your Google Account’s third-party connections and remove the stale ChatGPT authorization if it remains.
- Return to ChatGPT and connect Gmail again.
- Choose the intended Google identity.
- Complete the read-only test.
- Create a draft to yourself before sending externally.
Workspace administrators may restrict Gmail or write actions. If the connector is visible but disabled, ask the ChatGPT workspace administrator whether the app and its actions are allowed.
6. Start a new chat and name Gmail explicitly
Long conversations can contain competing instructions or context from several apps. Start a new chat and say “Use the connected Gmail app” rather than “email them.”

7. Do not approve unexplained mailbox searches
ChatGPT may search Gmail to resolve a person’s address or pull context from a thread. That can be useful when you asked for it. It is unnecessary when you supplied a complete recipient and message.
Cancel the action if the search scope does not match your request. Rewrite the prompt with explicit boundaries:
Use only the recipient, subject, and body below. Do not search Gmail or any other connected source. Create a draft and stop.
A connected app should not become blanket permission to inspect unrelated data whenever a simpler action is available.
Multiple Gmail accounts are a separate problem
If ChatGPT can draft from one Gmail account but not another, the connector may be functioning exactly as configured—it only has the authenticated identity.
