Copilot MCP: What Works in Microsoft 365 Copilot
“Copilot” is two products, and only one of them is what people mean by Copilot MCP. GitHub Copilot inside VS Code reads MCP servers from a config file, which is covered in VS Code MCP. This page is about Microsoft 365 Copilot, the business assistant, where MCP support is real but conditional in a way the documentation does not lead with.
The two supported routes
Copilot Studio is the main path. You add an MCP server using the MCP onboarding wizard, which Microsoft recommends, or by building a custom connector to your server through Power Apps. Copilot Studio currently supports the Streamable transport type.
Authentication is one of two models: an API key, which Microsoft frames as suitable for development or internal tools, or OAuth 2.0 through Microsoft Entra ID, which is the recommendation for anything in production.
Federated connectors are the second route. These use MCP to retrieve data in real time without indexing anything into Microsoft 365, which is the appeal for teams who do not want a copy of an external system living in their tenant. They are supported in Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat, Copilot in Excel, and the Researcher agent.
Discovery is not invocation
This is the part worth internalizing before you spend an afternoon on it. Whether your MCP server actually gets called is decided by Copilot’s orchestration layer, not by you and not by the presence of the connector.
The practical consequence, reported repeatedly against real deployments: a federated MCP connector can be visible and connectable, appear healthy, and still not be invoked consistently by Copilot Chat or Excel. Requests fail before ever reaching the MCP endpoint. Because the server never sees the traffic, its logs are clean, and debugging naturally starts in the wrong place.
So a tool that shows up in the list is not a tool you can rely on being used for a given prompt. Budget for that when scoping anything that depends on it.
Where the ceiling is
There is no such thing as an MCP trigger. The protocol's own working group says plainly that clients learn about server-side changes by polling for them, and a real event mechanism remains unshipped. Carly is where that part lives, watching thousands of apps and starting the work itself.
