Connect Multiple Slack Workspaces to ChatGPT Work
OpenAI states the limit in a single sentence: the ChatGPT Slack app can only connect to one Slack workspace at a time. No workaround inside ChatGPT changes that, so the question becomes what one workspace costs you and how to reach the rest. Carly holds your Gmail and Outlook mailboxes and every calendar on both sides in the same place.
What the Slack app does with the one workspace
The Slack app, which used to be called a connector, searches and answers across your Slack messages, threads, and channels, and ChatGPT references that content automatically when it is relevant. It works in chat, deep research, and agent mode.
Where a workspace admin has enabled them, it also takes actions on your behalf: joining a channel, creating a reminder, uploading a file, or updating your Slack profile.
Two details shape how useful the search half is:
- Keyword search works on every Slack plan. Semantic search is limited to Slack Business+ and Enterprise+ customers on AI plans. If results feel literal, that is why.
- Heavy use can hit your own quota. OpenAI notes that deep research, Pro models, and agent mode may exhaust your per-user Slack API limits even when workspace-wide limits are fine.
The admin layer, which is two admins deep
On Business workspaces the Slack app is enabled by default, and admins are advised to review Action control and disable any action whose Slack scope they would rather not approve. On Enterprise and Edu, an admin must enable Slack from the app directory before anyone can connect, and can configure role-based access for users or groups.
Then there is the Slack side. If your organization requires admin approval for app scopes, a Slack admin may need to approve or reinstall the ChatGPT Slack app before users can grant scopes for newly enabled actions. Turning on an action in ChatGPT and having it stay unavailable in practice is usually this.
Admins can also Manage domains to limit which Slack accounts workspace members are allowed to connect, which is worth knowing if you are wondering why your client’s workspace will not authorize.
One regional note: the app is not currently available to Plus and Pro users in the European Economic Area, Great Britain, or Switzerland. Business and Enterprise users are unaffected.
Who hits the one-workspace limit
Consultants and agencies living in client Slacks. Anyone in a Slack Connect arrangement with partners. Contractors carrying three community workspaces alongside their employer’s. Founders with a company workspace and an investor or accelerator one.
In each case the day involves several workspaces and ChatGPT sees one. Enterprise Grid does not rescue this either, since coordinating scopes across a Grid org is an approval question rather than a way to hold several workspaces in one ChatGPT connection.
1. Give each workspace a role
| Workspace | Role |
|---|---|
| Your company | Company |
| Client delivery Slack | Client |
| Industry community | Community |
Use the role in ordinary questions and name it explicitly before anything that posts or changes something.
2. Connect the Slack app in ChatGPT
- Select your profile icon, then Settings → Apps.
- Browse the app directory and select the Slack entry.
- Click Connect and complete the OAuth flow, choosing the workspace you want as your primary.
- On Enterprise or Edu, an admin enables Slack from the directory first.
- Ask for a summary of a channel you know to confirm it works.
Pick the workspace you would miss most, because it is the only one this connection will hold.
3. Connect each workspace to Carly
- Sign in at carlyassistant.com.
- Open carlyassistant.com/integrations.
- Find Slack and click Connect.
- Authorize the first workspace.
- Repeat for every additional workspace, selecting the correct one in Slack’s authorization screen each time.
- Verify which workspace each connection landed in before adding the next.
On a client workspace where you are not an admin, their Slack administrator approves the install. Ask early.
4. Add Carly to ChatGPT Work
- Open Plugins in the ChatGPT sidebar.
- Click +.
- Paste
https://carlyassistant.com/mcp/. - Authorize and sign in to the Carly workspace holding the Slack connections.
If + is disabled, a workspace administrator enables plugins under Workspace settings → Plugins.
5. Test each workspace read-only
In the Company workspace, summarize what happened in #engineering this week. Do not post anything.
In the Client workspace, find the most recent message about the launch date and tell me who said it. Read only.
Then the cross-workspace question:
Search the Company and Client workspaces for messages mentioning “invoice” in the last 14 days. Show the source workspace in every row.
6. Reuse this routing prompt
Treat my employer’s Slack as Company, the delivery Slack as Client, and the industry Slack as Community. Always state the target workspace before posting, joining a channel, uploading a file, or creating a reminder. Wait for approval on anything that writes.
Then name the target per action:
Post the status update in the Client workspace, in #delivery, and nowhere else.
Upload the summary to the Company workspace in #weekly-notes.
That last habit matters more in Slack than almost anywhere else. A message sent to the wrong workspace is visible to the wrong company immediately and cannot be quietly undone.
Native app versus Carly in ChatGPT Work
| Need | Slack app | Carly plugin |
|---|---|---|
| Search one workspace | Yes | Yes |
| Hold several workspaces at once | No | Yes |
| Compare two workspaces in one run | No | Yes |
| Post, join, remind, upload | Admin-gated actions | Yes |
| Act when a message arrives | No | Yes |
| Connect Slack to email, calendar, and CRM | Within a run | Yes |
| Run the same work outside ChatGPT | No | Yes |
The trigger row is the one that changes the shape of the day. A ChatGPT Work run starts when you start it or when a schedule starts it, so a customer question landing in #support at midnight sits until someone opens a chat. Carly fires on the message itself, in the cloud, with every workspace connected and each action reporting which one it came from.

Quick fixes
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT keeps asking you to reconnect Slack | An admin enabled a new action needing a scope you have not granted |
| An action stays unavailable after enabling it | A Slack admin approves or reinstalls the app with the new scopes |
| The Slack app is missing entirely | On Enterprise or Edu an admin enables it from the directory |
| A workspace will not authorize | Check Manage domains for a restriction on connectable accounts |
| Search feels too literal | Semantic search needs a Slack Business+ or Enterprise+ AI plan |
| Requests fail under heavy use | Deep research and agent mode can exhaust your per-user Slack API quota |
Frequently asked questions
Can ChatGPT connect to more than one Slack workspace?
No. OpenAI documents that the Slack app connects to one Slack workspace at a time, so a second workspace needs a second connection outside ChatGPT.
Can ChatGPT post messages in Slack?
Where a workspace admin has enabled actions, it can join a channel, create a reminder, upload a file, and update your Slack profile. Which actions are available is controlled per workspace under Action control.
Why does an action I enabled still not work?
The scope probably is not approved on the Slack side. If your Slack workspace requires admin approval, a Slack admin approves or reinstalls the app before the action becomes usable.
Does Slack Enterprise Grid let ChatGPT see several workspaces?
Not as one connection. Grid affects how scopes are approved across the org; the ChatGPT app still holds one workspace at a time.
Does ChatGPT react when a Slack message arrives?
No. Runs start from you or from a schedule, so nothing happens because a message landed.

"Before Carly, I relied on a Calendly link, but the whole process felt impersonal and not very professional. Carly changed that by handling all the back-and-forth, so I'm no longer stuck in endless email threads trying to line up schedules.
Now Carly reaches out to candidates, shares my real-time availability, lets them pick a slot, then sends a Zoom link and drops it straight into my calendar. She sends reminders to both of us before each call, which has significantly reduced no-shows and last-minute confusion.
On top of scheduling, Carly acts like a full executive assistant, sending me my schedule the night before so I can prepare for each call. It reminds me of the old x.ai assistant, but Carly is noticeably smarter, faster, and better suited to my healthcare recruitment business."
