How to Connect Multiple Slack Workspaces to ChatGPT
ChatGPT’s Slack app connects to one Slack workspace at a time. OpenAI states the limit directly: to connect a different workspace, you must disconnect the current one and reconnect. That makes the native app a poor fit for consultants, agencies, and operators who live in an internal workspace plus several client or community workspaces. Carly keeps each workspace authorized separately and exposes them to ChatGPT through one connection.
The native Slack limit is explicit
OpenAI’s ChatGPT Slack app documentation calls the connection one-to-one. A second workspace is a swap:
- Open Settings → Apps → Slack.
- Disconnect the current workspace.
- Connect again.
- Select the other workspace during Slack authorization.
The previous workspace is no longer connected. There is no native cross-workspace search and no instruction that can compare a client thread with an internal one.
The exception is narrow. ChatGPT Agents can operate across several workspaces inside one Slack Enterprise Grid organization after the app is approved and added to each workspace. That does not combine unrelated company, client, and community workspaces.
Search, actions, and posting are three different things
The ordinary Slack app searches messages and files that your Slack identity can already access. Admin-enabled actions include joining a channel, creating a reminder, uploading a file, and updating your Slack profile.
OpenAI requests Slack’s chat:write scope, but its current app documentation does not list posting a channel message as a user-facing action. Do not assume a granted scope creates a button or tool.
Actual proactive Slack posting is documented for ChatGPT Agents in Slack, available to Business, Edu, and Enterprise workspaces. Agents can respond in public channels, reply in threads, and send scheduled messages. That is a separate surface from the ordinary Slack search app.
Two ChatGPT accounts only move the wall
OpenAI’s account switcher can keep two ChatGPT accounts signed in on the web. Each account could connect a different Slack workspace, but nothing is merged: chats, memory, workspaces, and billing remain separate. The switcher is capped at two accounts, so it does not solve a portfolio of client workspaces.
1. Give each Slack workspace a role
| Workspace | Role |
|---|---|
example-hq | Internal |
example-client-contoso | Client |
example-operators | Community |
Roles are easy to use in conversation. Keep the actual workspace and channel name in every write request.
2. Connect the first Slack workspace to Carly
- Sign in at carlyassistant.com.
- Open carlyassistant.com/integrations.
- Find Slack and click Connect.
- Choose the first workspace on Slack’s authorization screen.
- Review the requested permissions and approve.
- Confirm the workspace name in Carly.
Slack allows members to install apps by default, but a workspace owner can require approval. If the install is blocked, ask an owner or administrator to approve Carly.
3. Add the remaining workspaces
- Return to Carly’s integrations page.
- Select Slack → Connect again.
- Switch to the next workspace at Slack’s authorization screen.
- Confirm the workspace name before approving.
- Repeat for every workspace you are permitted to connect.
Slack’s guest permissions table shows that single-channel and multi-channel guests cannot install apps or authorize their Slack account to use them. If you are only a guest in a client workspace, ask the client’s workspace owner for an approved connection rather than assuming your guest login can add one.
4. Add Carly to ChatGPT
- Open Plugins in the ChatGPT sidebar.
- Click +.
- Enter
https://carlyassistant.com/mcp/. - Complete authorization.
- Sign in to the Carly workspace containing the Slack connections.
Full custom MCP support is documented for Business and Enterprise/Edu on the web. Pro supports read and fetch through developer mode. If the add control is unavailable, ask the ChatGPT workspace administrator to enable the connection.
5. Test each workspace read-only
In
example-client-contoso, list the five newest messages in #project-alpha with sender and timestamp. Do not post anything.
In
example-hq, find the newest thread containing “renewal date.” State the workspace and channel and do not reply.
Then test the combined view:
Search the Contoso and HQ example workspaces for “launch risk” from the last 14 days. Include the workspace and channel in every row.
6. Reuse this workspace-routing prompt
Treat
example-hqas Internal,example-client-contosoas Client, andexample-operatorsas Community. Always state the target workspace and channel before changing anything. Never post in a Client workspace without asking first.
Then name the destination again:
Draft an update for
example-hq, channel #announcements. Do not post yet.
Post the approved reply in the Contoso example thread only. Do not cross-post it.

Quick fixes
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Connecting the second workspace removed the first | That is the native one-to-one behavior; connect both through Carly |
| Slack authorized the wrong workspace | Reconnect and verify the workspace name at the top of the consent screen |
| Slack app installation is blocked | Ask the Slack workspace owner or admin to approve it |
| Guest account cannot authorize | Ask the client workspace to provide an approved connection |
| Private channel is missing | Confirm the authorized Slack identity is already a channel member |
| Search misses older messages | Check the workspace’s Slack retention policy; deleted content is unavailable to the API |
| ChatGPT uses the wrong workspace | Require workspace and channel attribution in every result |
Frequently asked questions
Can ChatGPT connect two Slack workspaces?
No. OpenAI says the Slack app connects to one workspace at a time. You must disconnect it before connecting another workspace.
Does connecting a second Slack workspace replace the first?
Yes. The documented process is disconnect, then reconnect and select the other workspace. Both are not kept active in the native app.
Can ChatGPT post messages to Slack?
Workspace Agents can respond and send scheduled Slack messages on Business, Edu, and Enterprise. For the ordinary Slack app, OpenAI documents search plus actions such as reminders and file uploads, but not a channel-post action.
Can a Slack guest connect the app?
Slack’s permissions table shows that guest roles cannot install apps or authorize a Slack account to use them. A client workspace owner or administrator must provide an approved path.

"Before Carly, I relied on a Calendly link, but the whole process felt impersonal and not very professional. Carly changed that by handling all the back-and-forth, so I'm no longer stuck in endless email threads trying to line up schedules.
Now Carly reaches out to candidates, shares my real-time availability, lets them pick a slot, then sends a Zoom link and drops it straight into my calendar. She sends reminders to both of us before each call, which has significantly reduced no-shows and last-minute confusion.
On top of scheduling, Carly acts like a full executive assistant, sending me my schedule the night before so I can prepare for each call. It reminds me of the old x.ai assistant, but Carly is noticeably smarter, faster, and better suited to my healthcare recruitment business."
