How to Do a Hanging Indent in Google Docs (2 Ways, 2026)
A hanging indent leaves the first line flush left while indenting every line below it — the required format for bibliographies and works-cited pages in MLA, APA, and Chicago style. Google Docs has a built-in setting for it. Here are both ways to apply it.
Method 1: The Indentation Options Menu (Most Reliable)
- Highlight the paragraph you want to format. To format an entire reference list, select all of it at once.
- Go to Format > Align & indent > Indentation options.
- Under Special indent, open the drop-down and choose Hanging.
- Set the depth to 0.5” — the standard for MLA and APA.
- Click Apply.
The first line stays at the margin; every subsequent line indents half an inch.
Method 2: The Ruler (Visual)
If the ruler isn’t visible, turn it on with View > Show ruler.
On the ruler you’ll see two markers at the left margin:
- The down-pointing triangle (First-line indent)
- The rectangle/bar below it (Left indent)
To create a hanging indent:
- Select your text.
- Drag the rectangle (Left indent) marker right to 0.5”. This moves all lines in.
- Drag the down triangle (First-line indent) back to 0” (the left margin).
The result: the first line sits at the margin and the rest hang inward.
Apply It to a Whole Reference List
Both methods work on multiple paragraphs at once. Select your entire works-cited or references section first, then apply the hanging indent. Each reference will be formatted independently, with its own first line at the margin.
Tip: Make sure each reference is its own paragraph (one Enter between them), not separated by line breaks (Shift+Enter) — otherwise the indent applies to the whole block instead of each entry.
Troubleshooting
Every line indented, including the first
You likely set a normal left indent instead of a hanging one. Reopen Format > Align & indent > Indentation options and confirm Special indent is set to Hanging, not the left-indent box.

Your references are separated by line breaks instead of paragraph breaks. Put your cursor at the start of each reference and press Enter to make it a true paragraph.
It won’t stick when I add new references
Apply the hanging indent after you finish typing, or set it on an empty paragraph first so new text inherits the format.
