How to Update Zoom (2026)
Zoom pushes frequent updates with new features and security fixes, and some meeting options (like newer virtual backgrounds) only work on the latest version. Here’s how to update on every platform and fix it when an update stalls.
Update Zoom on Windows or Mac
- Open the Zoom desktop app and sign in.
- Click your profile picture in the top-right corner.
- Click Check for Updates.
- If an update is found, click Update and wait for it to download.
- Zoom restarts to apply it.
If it says “You are up to date,” you’re already on the latest version.
Turn On Automatic Updates
So you never fall behind:
- Click your profile picture > Settings (gear) > General.
- Tick Automatically keep Zoom desktop client up to date.
- Choose an update cadence:
- Slow — stable releases only (recommended for most people)
- Fast — newest features sooner, occasionally less stable
Check Which Version You Have
- Click your profile picture > Help > About Zoom, or
- Settings > Statistics.
Compare it against the current release on Zoom’s downloads page if you’re unsure.
Update Zoom on Mobile
iPhone/iPad:
- Open the App Store > tap your profile icon.
- Scroll to Available Updates, find Zoom, and tap Update (or Update All).
Android:
- Open the Google Play Store > tap your profile icon > Manage apps & device.
- Tap Updates available, find Zoom, and tap Update.
Turn on auto-updates in each store so the mobile app stays current too.
Troubleshooting
”Check for Updates” is missing
On managed/work computers, IT controls updates and hides this option. Ask your admin, or download the latest installer from zoom.us/download and run it over your existing install.
The update downloads but won’t install
Fully quit Zoom (check the system tray/menu bar so it isn’t running in the background), then reopen and retry. If it still fails, uninstall Zoom and install fresh from zoom.us/download — your settings sync from your account.
”Update failed” or it loops asking to update
Reboot, then reinstall from the official installer. A corrupted partial download is the usual cause.
My virtual background / feature still isn’t there after updating
Confirm the version under About Zoom actually changed. Some features also need to be enabled by your admin in the web portal, separate from the app version.
I can’t update mid-meeting
Updates require a restart, so finish or leave the meeting first, then update.
