How to Change Your Background on Zoom (2026)

A Zoom virtual background hides whatever’s behind you — handy when your room is messy or you want a clean, professional look. You can blur it, drop in an image, or use a video, and modern Zoom doesn’t need a green screen. Here’s how.

Change Your Background During a Meeting

  1. On the toolbar, click the ^ (up arrow) next to Start/Stop Video.
  2. Click Choose Virtual Background….
  3. In the Background & Effects panel:
    • Click Blur to softly blur your real surroundings.
    • Click a built-in image to replace your background.
    • Click None to turn it off.
  4. Close the window — it applies live.

Set a Background Before a Meeting

  1. Open the Zoom desktop app.
  2. Click your profile picture > Settings (gear icon).
  3. Go to Background & Effects.
  4. Choose blur, an image, or upload your own. It’ll be active the next time you join a call.

Upload Your Own Image or Video

  1. In Background & Effects, click the + next to the thumbnails.
  2. Choose Add Image or Add Video.
  3. Pick a file from your computer (a 1280×720 / 16:9 image looks best).
  4. It’s added to your gallery — click it to apply.

For the cleanest result, use a high-resolution image and sit in even lighting.

Change Your Background on Mobile

  1. In a meeting, tap More (the ).
  2. Tap Background and Effects (or Virtual Background).
  3. Choose Blur, a built-in image, or tap + to add your own.
  4. Tap Close.

Troubleshooting

”Virtual Background” option is missing

Update Zoom to the latest version — older builds and some low-spec computers hide it. See how to update Zoom. Your admin can also enable it in the web portal under Settings > Meeting > Virtual Background.

The background looks patchy or cuts off my head

You’re relying on software detection without a green screen. Improve your lighting, sit against a plain wall, and avoid wearing colors that match the background. If you have a green screen, tick I have a green screen in the settings.

”Your computer doesn’t meet the requirements”

Older CPUs can’t run virtual backgrounds smoothly. Use Blur (lighter on the processor) instead, or close other heavy apps.

My background keeps flickering

Disable hardware acceleration: Settings > Video > Advanced and toggle the rendering/processing options, then restart Zoom.

I want it off

Open Background & Effects and click None.
