SaneBox Review and Pricing (2026): Is It Still Worth It?

SaneBox moves the email you don’t need right now out of your inbox and into server folders. It has done this since 2010, with almost any mail provider. Over the past year it also got pricier and halved its free trial, and it now offers AI reply drafts.

The short verdict: SaneBox is a solid, long-running filter for someone drowning in newsletters and cold pitches, especially on iCloud, Fastmail or a plain IMAP account where the AI inbox tools don’t reach. The catch is that it only hides mail: the messages that actually need a reply, a meeting or a follow-up still land on you, and the monthly price is up about a third since mid-2025. If you want the important mail handled, not just the noise sorted, look at Carly.

What SaneBox actually does

SaneBox connects to your mail server, not your email app. Its robots “analyze your past interactions with your email to figure out what’s important to you”, then ask the server to move each new message to the right folder. Because the folders live on the server, they show up in Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail or your phone without installing anything.

  • SaneLater: the core filter. Mail from senders you don’t engage with lands here.
  • SaneNews for newsletters; SaneBlackHole sends a sender’s future mail straight to trash.
  • Daily Digest: an interactive summary of filtered mail where you can move, train or archive.
  • Reminders and SaneNoReplies for sent emails nobody answered, plus snooze folders, SaneCC, attachment offloading and custom folders.

Training is simple: move a misfiled email and SaneBox learns from it.

Does SaneBox have AI now?

Yes, in a limited way. The sorting has always been machine learning, now branded “SaneBox AI.” The newer addition is Reply Draft (SaneDrafts): SaneBox’s help center says it generates a reply in your Drafts folder for emails where “a response appears appropriate,” usually “within 10–15 minutes,” and “nothing sends automatically.” It skips receipts, newsletters and anything you already answered.

Two caveats: SaneDrafts is “available on plans that include AI features,” but the pricing page doesn’t say which plans those are. And SaneBox stops at the draft; it won’t send, book a meeting or follow up for you.

What SaneBox users say

SaneBox holds a 4.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot across 759 reviews and 4.6 across 648 ratings for its iPhone app. The praise is consistent. The complaints cluster around training time, support and billing.

Where it earns its price

“Now it only takes a few minutes to do my email, before Sanebox, it was like 30 minutes.” (Trustpilot reviewer, August 2026)

“As I processed the SaneLater folder, it learned what was priority and what was not, so it progressively got better at understanding my inbox.” (Trustpilot reviewer, September 2026)

“Happy SaneBox + FastMail user for two years now. SaneBox works great with any standard IMAP connection.” (Hacker News commenter)

My read: the value is real for high-volume inboxes, and IMAP support is SaneBox’s edge over newer Gmail-and-Outlook-only tools. One HN user summed up its reputation as “unsexily solving this exact problem for ages”.

Where people get stuck

“The beginning is a little bit tedious because you need to train the AI as to what is important and what isn’t, and frequently look into these other folders and make sure you didn’t miss anything important.” (Trustpilot reviewer, July 2026)

“It took some trial and error, and I missed a few customer coupons for Kohl’s and Michaels during the first couple of weeks … It took me about a month to get to this point.” (Trustpilot reviewer, July 2026)

“Until they had a huge outage in Sept of 2025. And since then, it has been a nightmare. Emails would stop being tagged to SaneLater randomly.” (Trustpilot reviewer and 10-year customer, October 2025)

“I’ve paid to use SaneBox, but then it was losing important emails…” (Hacker News commenter)

My read: expect weeks of checking SaneLater before you trust it. A missed coupon is cheap; a missed client email isn’t.

Support and billing

“The company offers no telephone customer support, unless you buy the premium level!!” (Trustpilot reviewer, September 2026)

“Lot’s of upsells and sort of sneaky tactics to make you think the price is less than it actually is.” (Trustpilot reviewer, April 2020)

Both check out against the pricing page: phone support is listed only on Dinner, and the page’s code defaults to showing the two-year plan’s per-month price, the lowest number available.

SaneBox pricing (2026)

Prices as listed on SaneBox’s website on September 28, 2026, in USD.

SaneBox sells three public plans. They differ by how many email accounts you can connect and how many features you can switch on per account.

PlanEmail accountsFeatures per accountMonthlyAnnual2-year
Snack12$9.49/mo$65/yr ($5.42/mo)$109 ($4.54/mo)
Lunch26$15.99/mo$109/yr ($9.08/mo)$179 ($7.46/mo)
Dinner4All$42.99/mo$319/yr ($26.58/mo)$529 ($22.04/mo)

Every plan includes the Daily Digest and Email Deep Clean. The feature picks come from a menu that includes SaneLater itself, SaneNoReplies, Do Not Disturb, SaneBlackHole, SaneNews, SaneCC, Reminders, attachment offloading, SaneNotSpam, custom snooze folders and DIY folders. SaneBox’s pricing FAQ says the allotment is per account: a Lunch plan gets “6 additional features for each email account.” Only Dinner includes phone support.

Other terms:

  • Trial: 7 days, all features, up to 4 accounts. It was 14 days in Internet Archive snapshots through July 2026, and the App Store listing still advertises a two-week trial and older prices.
  • Discounts: 25% off for education, non-profit and government.
  • Refunds: canceling does not refund you automatically. There’s a 30-day money-back guarantee, but you have to ask support for it.
  • Teams: SaneBox for Business adds admin controls, company-wide rules and Active Directory and Salesforce integrations. It’s sales-led with no public price.

How much prices have risen

Internet Archive snapshots of SaneBox’s pricing page show steady increases:

Monthly priceJuly 2025December 2025May 2026June 2026Sept 2026
Snack$7$7.99$8.99$9.99$9.49
Lunch$12$13.99$14.99$17.99$15.99
Dinner$36$38.99$39.99$44.99$42.99

Annual prices held at $59, $99 and $299 through May 2026 and are now $65, $109 and $319. Monthly Snack is up about 36% in 14 months, though older reviews still quote “$7 a month.”

What it really costs: two worked examples

Solo: Emily, one Gmail account. She wants SaneLater and SaneBlackHole, so Snack covers her. Monthly billing costs $113.88 a year. Paying annually costs $65, and the two-year plan is $109 up front ($54.50 a year). If she adds a second, personal inbox or wants more than two features, she moves to Lunch: $191.88 a year monthly, or $109 billed annually.

Team: five people, one work inbox each. Without a Business contract, each person buys their own plan. Five Snack plans billed annually cost $325 a year. Five Lunch plans (for anyone who wants reminders and snoozing too) cost $545 a year annually, or $959.40 a year paid monthly. Admin controls and central billing mean talking to sales.

Is it worth it? On an annual plan, yes, if newsletters and cold email are your main problem. Monthly billing is poor value: annual Snack costs 57% of twelve monthly payments. If your real problem is mail that needs you, no filter fixes it.

Problems and limits

Is SaneBox safe?

SaneBox says “Your emails never leave your server”, that it “only analyzes headers,” and that credentials are encrypted with keys held in hardware security modules. It passes Google’s annual Cloud Application Security Assessment and runs a HackerOne bug bounty. One nuance: Reply Draft must read message bodies. SaneBox’s wording: “When optional features retrieve the body of email they are never stored.”

SaneBox vs Carly

SaneBox wins on provider breadth, and on price if quieter folders are all you need. Carly handles what’s left after the sort: CC it on a thread and it books the meeting, drafts or sends the reply, follows up with whoever went quiet, and updates your CRM through the Carly connector. Rule-based sorting can run as a free Carly workflow, so you aren’t paying for the filtering.

Carly’s Email Agents each get their own address, instructions and knowledge files, so a support@ or bookings@ inbox gets answered, not just sorted. A booking page keeps scheduling back-and-forth out of your inbox entirely. Teams that need SSO or a custom setup can book a call with the Carly team.

Who should use SaneBox, and who should look elsewhere

SaneBox fits if you:

  • Use iCloud, Fastmail, Yahoo or a custom IMAP server and want smart filtering
  • Mostly suffer from newsletters, promotions and cold pitches
  • Will commit to an annual plan

Look elsewhere if you:

  • Spend your time on email that needs replies, scheduling or follow-up, not on noise
  • Want an assistant that sends and books, not one that drafts and waits
  • Need email connected to your CRM, project tools or chat

FAQ

How much does SaneBox cost?

As of September 28, 2026: Snack is $9.49/month (1 account), Lunch $15.99/month (2 accounts), Dinner $42.99/month (4 accounts). Annual billing drops those to $65, $109 and $319 a year, and two-year plans to $109, $179 and $529. Business pricing is quote-only.

Is SaneBox worth it in 2026?

For filtering on an annual plan, yes, on nearly any provider. Month to month it’s weaker value, and it won’t answer, schedule or follow up for you. If that’s the work eating your day, Carly handles it from a CC.

Does SaneBox have AI?

Its sorting is machine learning, and it now offers Reply Draft (SaneDrafts), which writes reply drafts in your voice into your Drafts folder. Nothing sends automatically, and SaneBox says drafting is on “plans that include AI features” without naming them publicly.

Is SaneBox safe?

SaneBox says it analyzes headers, never stores your emails, encrypts credentials and passes Google’s annual security assessment. Reply Draft reads bodies but, per SaneBox, doesn’t store them.

Does SaneBox work with Outlook and Gmail?

Yes. It works at the server level with Gmail, Microsoft 365, Exchange, iCloud, Yahoo, Fastmail and any IMAP account, so its folders appear in any app. If you want replies and scheduling handled too, Carly works with both, including several accounts at once.

Is there a free version of SaneBox?

No. There’s a 7-day free trial with no credit card, then a paid plan. Canceling doesn’t refund automatically; request the 30-day money-back guarantee from support.

See what people say

"Before Carly, I relied on a Calendly link, but the whole process felt impersonal and not very professional. Carly changed that by handling all the back-and-forth, so I'm no longer stuck in endless email threads trying to line up schedules.

Now Carly reaches out to candidates, shares my real-time availability, lets them pick a slot, then sends a Zoom link and drops it straight into my calendar. She sends reminders to both of us before each call, which has significantly reduced no-shows and last-minute confusion.

On top of scheduling, Carly acts like a full executive assistant, sending me my schedule the night before so I can prepare for each call. It reminds me of the old x.ai assistant, but Carly is noticeably smarter, faster, and better suited to my healthcare recruitment business."
