AI Help Desk: What It Does, What It Costs, 7 Options
An AI help desk is a ticket queue where software takes the first pass at every conversation. It reads, tags, routes and drafts, and it closes the easy ones before a person opens them.
Every major helpdesk sells this now. What separates them is which channels the AI actually answers, and what it counts when it bills you.
The quick answer: An AI help desk uses AI to classify and tag incoming conversations, route them to the right person, draft replies for your agents, summarize long threads, and resolve routine questions on its own. You usually pay twice: per seat for your people, and per resolution, session or outcome for the AI agent. Zendesk tops our list for large ticket queues with someone to run them. Carly is #2 and the pick for small teams whose customers call, text and email: it answers your business line and texts when nobody can pick up, works the support inbox, and puts every call, text and email in one team inbox.
AI help desks compared
US list prices from each vendor’s pricing page and help center, checked October 2, 2026. Seat prices are per agent a month, billed annually, unless noted.
| # | Tool | Best for | Plans from | What the AI costs | Where the AI answers customers |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Zendesk | Large ticket queues with an admin | $19 (Support Team), $55 (Suite Team) | 5 to 10 resolutions per agent a month included, then $1.50 to $2.00 each | Messaging, email, web forms, voice |
| 2 | Carly | Small teams whose customers call, text and email | Free Zapier-style workflows; AI agents from $35/month | Phone line priced on a short call | Calls, texts and email, in one team inbox |
| 3 | Intercom Fin | Chat-first SaaS and apps | $29 (Essential) | $0.99 per outcome | Chat, email, messaging apps, Slack; voice through sales |
| 4 | Freshdesk (Freddy AI) | Email desks watching seat cost | $19 (Growth) | 500 sessions once, then $49 per 100 | Email; chat needs Freshdesk Omni |
| 5 | Gorgias | Shopify stores | $10 a month for 50 tickets (Starter, monthly only) | $0.90 per automated interaction ($1.00 monthly), $1.50 above the allowance | Email, chat, SMS, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp |
| 6 | Help Scout | Small, email-first teams | Free for up to 5 users, then $25 per user | $0.75 per resolution | The Beacon chat widget |
| 7 | Front | Shared inboxes across teams | $25 (Starter) | $0.05 to $0.89 per conversation, by outcome | Your Front channels: email, chat, SMS, social |
What an AI help desk does
Vendors bundle seven separate jobs under “AI.” Here’s each one, and what the products above call it.
| Job | What the AI does | What vendors call it |
|---|---|---|
| Triage and tagging | Reads each new conversation and labels its topic, intent, language and sentiment | Zendesk intelligent triage, Freddy auto triage, Front AI Topics |
| Routing | Sends it to the right group, person or priority based on those labels | Zendesk triage with routing, Freddy auto triage (priority, group, status), Front rules |
| Drafted replies | Writes a reply for a human agent to check and send | Zendesk Copilot, Freddy AI Copilot, Intercom Copilot, Help Scout AI Drafts, Front Copilot |
| Autonomous resolution | Answers the customer and closes the conversation with no person involved | Zendesk AI agents, Fin, Freddy AI Agent, Gorgias AI Agent, Help Scout AI Answers, Front Autopilot |
| Actions | Issues refunds, cancels or edits orders, updates accounts in connected systems | Zendesk procedures and actions, Fin Procedures, Gorgias Actions in Shopify |
| Summaries | Condenses a long thread so the next person can pick it up | Zendesk Copilot, Freddy summary generator, Help Scout AI Summarize |
| Quality and insights | Scores conversations, infers satisfaction, flags trends | Zendesk QA, Front Smart QA and Smart CSAT, Freddy AI Insights |
The split that matters when you buy: the jobs that help your human agents (drafts, summaries, triage) are usually a copilot, billed per agent seat. The job that talks to customers is the AI agent, billed every time it finishes a conversation.
What an AI help desk costs: seats plus a meter
The seat price is predictable. The AI meter isn’t, because each vendor counts a different thing:
| Vendor | What it bills | What counts | What doesn’t |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zendesk | Verified resolution | The AI resolved it and an LLM review of the transcript confirms it | Escalations, and “contained” conversations the review can’t confirm |
| Intercom Fin | Outcome | The customer confirms, or simply leaves after Fin’s answer, or a Procedure ends in a handoff | Asking for a human, escalation rules, a failed Procedure |
| Freshdesk | Session | Every thread the AI works in a 72-hour window (24 hours on chat), resolved or not, including test previews | Nothing; the pack is spent either way |
| Gorgias | Automated interaction, plus a ticket | The AI resolves it with no handover and no human reply within 72 hours | A handover bills the ticket only |
| Help Scout | Resolution | The bot answers and the customer doesn’t ask for more, once per session | Anything past your monthly spending cap; the bot switches off |
| Front | Highest outcome per conversation | $0.05 for triage, $0.39 for a handoff with context or a draft, $0.89 for a full resolution | Each conversation is charged once |
Say Michael runs a four-agent support team and the AI resolves 300 conversations a month. Here’s the AI line alone, on top of seats or the plan:
| Help desk | How 300 AI resolutions bill | Extra AI cost a month |
|---|---|---|
| Zendesk, Suite Team | 20 included (5 per agent), 280 extra | $420 committed, $560 pay-as-you-go |
| Gorgias, Basic with AI Agent | 30 included in the $77 plan, 270 extra at $1.50, and each also counts as a ticket | $405 |
| Intercom Fin | 300 outcomes at $0.99 | $297 |
| Front Autopilot | 300 resolutions at $0.89, plus $0.05 or $0.39 on conversations it only triages or hands off | $267 and up |
| Help Scout AI Answers | 300 resolutions at $0.75 | $225 |
| Freshdesk, Freddy AI Agent | 3 packs of 100 sessions at $49, once the one-time 500 are gone | $147 and up, since unresolved threads use sessions too |
The cheapest meter isn’t always the cheapest bill. Freshdesk charges for every thread the AI works, so a thin knowledge base burns sessions on threads it hands back. Zendesk charges more per unit, but only when the resolution is confirmed.
The 7 best AI help desks, ranked
1. Zendesk: the deepest AI for large ticket queues
Zendesk puts AI agents on every plan (messaging needs a Suite plan), across email, messaging, web forms and, with Zendesk’s phone product, voice. Copilot adds intelligent triage, suggested replies and auto assist for your human agents. It’s the most complete AI help desk here, and the one that most needs an admin: a knowledge base to answer from, procedures for anything beyond questions, and a separate AI agent for each channel.
Best for: Large support teams and contact centers with someone to run the AI.
Pricing: Support Team $19, Suite Team $55 and Suite Professional $115 per agent a month, billed annually. Five automated resolutions per agent a month on the Team plans and 10 on Professional, then $1.50 committed or $2.00 pay-as-you-go, and only verified resolutions bill. Copilot is $50 per agent from Suite Professional. Full breakdown in our Zendesk AI guide.
2. Carly: AI that answers your support calls, texts and email
Most AI help desks are built around a chat widget and a ticket form. A lot of small-team support doesn’t arrive that way. It’s the call at 6 pm, the text from a customer standing in the parking lot, the email nobody owns.
Carly for teams takes your business line. When nobody can pick up, Carly answers the call or the text from your own FAQs, policies and documents. It recognizes the customer from your email and CRM, so someone who emailed last week isn’t a stranger on the phone. It books them on the right teammate’s real calendar while they’re still on the line, and hands the conversation to a person when a person should take it. Every call and text lands in one team inbox alongside email, where Claire can take a thread over and hand it back.
On the email side, Carly triages and labels the support inbox, drafts and sends replies and follow-ups, and can run a dedicated email agent with its own address for support mail. You don’t have to rip out a helpdesk to add it: Carly connects to thousands of apps, Zendesk, Freshdesk, Intercom, Gorgias and Front among them, so a workflow can open a ticket for each call and your queue stays the record.
Best for: Small teams whose customers phone and text as much as they email.
Pricing: Free Zapier-style workflows; AI agents from $35/month. The Carly team sets up the number with you, the one customers already call or a new local one, and the phone line is priced on a short call. Get started with Carly.
3. Intercom Fin: chat-first AI, on Intercom or your current helpdesk
Fin answers from your help center, documents and policies in chat, email, WhatsApp, Instagram, SMS, Slack and Discord, and runs refunds and account changes through Procedures. It also runs on top of Zendesk, Salesforce, HubSpot, Freshworks and others, so you can buy the AI without switching helpdesks. The catch is what bills: a customer who leaves after Fin’s answer counts as an assumed resolution, happy or not.
Best for: SaaS and app companies whose support starts in a chat bubble.
Pricing: $0.99 per outcome plus Intercom seats from $29 a month billed annually, or $0.99 per outcome with a monthly minimum on another helpdesk. Fin Voice is sold through sales at $1.99 per voice outcome. Salesforce completed its acquisition of Fin, formerly Intercom, on September 10, 2026. More in our Intercom Fin guide.
4. Freshdesk with Freddy AI: cheap seats, a one-time AI allowance
Freddy AI Agent comes with every Freshdesk plan and answers support email from your solution articles, files and FAQs. Freddy AI Copilot drafts and rewrites replies, summarizes tickets, suggests articles and recommends priority, group and status. Chat AI needs Freshdesk Omni, and Freshworks’ AI agent builder makes chat and email agents only.
Best for: Email-heavy teams watching the seat price.
Pricing: Growth $19, Pro $55 and Enterprise $89 per agent a month, billed annually. 500 complimentary AI sessions once per account, then $49 per 100, and the AI agent stops replying when the balance hits zero. Copilot is $29 per agent from Pro. Our Freddy AI guide covers how sessions are counted.
5. Gorgias: AI that acts inside Shopify
Gorgias AI Agent answers shoppers on email, chat, SMS, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp, and can refund, cancel, edit orders and start returns in Shopify when a skill tells it to. Its Shopping Assistant side recommends products and hands out discount codes. It needs a connected Shopify store, and Gorgias Voice is a phone add-on for your human agents.
Best for: Shopify brands with order-status and returns volume.
Pricing: $0.90 per automated interaction billed annually ($1.00 monthly), 30 to 530 included depending on the plan, $1.50 each above that, and every AI resolution also bills as a ticket. Plans start at $10 a month for 50 tickets on Starter, monthly only. Details in our Gorgias AI guide.
6. Help Scout: light AI for a human-first inbox
Help Scout keeps support looking like email. AI Assist (edit, shorten, translate) is on Standard, and AI Drafts and AI Summarize start on Plus. The customer-facing bot, AI Answers, lives in the Beacon widget and bills per resolution, with a monthly spending cap that switches it off when you hit it.
Best for: Small email-first teams that want AI helping agents more than replacing them.
Pricing: Free for up to 5 users with no AI, then $25, $45 or $75 per user a month billed annually ($30, $54 or $90 monthly). AI Answers is $0.75 per resolution. More in our Help Scout AI guide.
7. Front: AI on a shared inbox, priced by outcome
Front is a shared inbox with ticketing, built for teams where support, sales and ops share customer conversations. AI Topics classifies contact reasons on every plan. Copilot, Smart QA and Smart CSAT are add-ons below Enterprise. Autopilot, Front’s omnichannel AI agent, is an add-on on every plan, charged once per conversation for the best outcome it reaches.
Best for: Teams sharing customer email across departments.
Pricing: $25, $65 or $105 per seat a month billed annually ($35 and $85 monthly; Enterprise is annual only). Copilot and Smart QA are $20 a seat and Smart CSAT $10, all included on Enterprise. Autopilot is $0.05 per triaged conversation, $0.39 per handoff and $0.89 per resolution. More in our Front AI guide.
Four questions to ask before you buy an AI help desk
- What counts as a resolution? Fin and Help Scout bill a customer who just leaves. Zendesk bills only resolutions an LLM review confirms. Freshdesk bills a session whether the AI solved anything or not. Get the definition in writing.
- What happens when the meter runs out? Zendesk keeps answering and bills overage by default. Freddy’s AI agent stops replying and sends everything to your team. Help Scout’s bot switches off at your spending cap.
- Which channels does the AI answer on your plan? Freddy answers chat only on Freshdesk Omni. Front Starter supports one channel type. Zendesk’s messaging AI needs a Suite plan. Gorgias AI Agent needs Shopify.
- Who answers the phone? Phone AI is a separate purchase at Zendesk (per resolution plus per-minute charges) and Intercom (Fin Voice, through sales). If your customers call more than they chat, set up Carly on your business line and the calls and texts land in the same inbox as email.
FAQ
What is an AI help desk?
Customer support software where AI takes the first pass on incoming conversations: classifying and tagging them, routing them, drafting replies for agents, summarizing threads, and resolving routine questions without a person. Zendesk, Freshdesk, Intercom, Gorgias, Help Scout and Front all sell it this way, usually as per-seat plans plus a per-resolution meter for the AI agent.
Is an AI ticketing system the same as an AI help desk?
Mostly. The ticketing system is the queue: every email, chat or form becomes a ticket with a status, an owner and a priority. An AI ticketing system classifies, prioritizes and routes those tickets automatically. “AI help desk” usually means the whole product: the queue plus the knowledge base, the channels and the AI agent that answers customers.
How much does AI help desk software cost?
Seats start at $19 per agent a month billed annually (Zendesk Support Team, Freshdesk Growth), and the AI agent bills on top: $0.75 per resolution at Help Scout, $0.89 at Front, $0.99 per outcome at Intercom, $1.50 to $2.00 at Zendesk past the included allowance, and $49 per 100 sessions at Freshdesk. Copilot features for your agents add $20 to $50 per agent a month. Carly has free Zapier-style workflows; AI agents from $35/month.
What’s the difference between an AI agent and an AI copilot in a help desk?
The AI agent talks to customers and resolves conversations on its own, and it’s billed per resolution, outcome or session. The copilot works for your human agents inside the ticket, drafting replies, summarizing and triaging, and it’s billed per agent seat.
Can an AI help desk answer phone calls?
Some can, at extra cost. Zendesk’s voice AI agents, generally available since September 2026, bill per resolution plus telephony minutes and a per-minute connection charge. Intercom sells Fin Voice through sales at $1.99 per voice outcome. Freshworks’ AI agent builder makes chat and email agents, and Gorgias Voice is for human agents. Carly answers your business line and texts when your team can’t, books on real calendars and hands off to a person in one inbox.
Can I add AI to the help desk I already have?
Yes. Fin runs on Zendesk, Salesforce, HubSpot, Freshworks and others at $0.99 per outcome with a monthly minimum. eesel AI works inside Zendesk, Freshdesk, Intercom, Gorgias and more, from $299 a month for 500 credits. And Carly connects to your helpdesk, so the calls and texts it answers can still land as tickets in your queue. Try Carly on your own support line.

See what people say
"Before Carly, I relied on a Calendly link, but the whole process felt impersonal and not very professional. Carly changed that by handling all the back-and-forth, so I'm no longer stuck in endless email threads trying to line up schedules.
Now Carly reaches out to candidates, shares my real-time availability, lets them pick a slot, then sends a Zoom link and drops it straight into my calendar. She sends reminders to both of us before each call, which has significantly reduced no-shows and last-minute confusion.
On top of scheduling, Carly acts like a full executive assistant, sending me my schedule the night before so I can prepare for each call. It reminds me of the old x.ai assistant, but Carly is noticeably smarter, faster, and better suited to my healthcare recruitment business."
