Zendesk AI: What AI Agents and Copilot Cost in 2026

Zendesk AI is not one product. It is AI agents that answer customers, Copilot that helps your human agents, and a per-resolution meter under the AI agents. The seat price on the plan card is the smallest part of the decision.

The quick answer: Zendesk AI agents come with every plan, from Support Team ($19 per agent a month, email only) to Suite Team ($55, adding chat and voice), billed annually. Each plan includes a small allowance of automated resolutions, 5 per agent a month on the Team plans and 10 on Suite Professional, then $1.50 each committed in advance or $2.00 pay-as-you-go. Copilot is a $50-per-agent add-on from Suite Professional ($115). Voice AI agents need Zendesk’s phone product and bill per minute on top. If what you actually need is AI on your support line and texts, Carly answers calls and texts when your team can’t and hands off in one inbox, next to the Zendesk you already run.

Two things the plan cards don’t make obvious: the included allowance caps at 10,000 resolutions a year on every plan, and Copilot can only be added from Suite Professional, so a team that wants AI help for its human agents is on $165 per agent a month before a single resolution is billed.

Since May 2026 there is no separate “AI agents - Advanced” add-on to buy. Zendesk folded the advanced, agentic features (generative procedures, actions, API integrations) into every plan and retired AI agents - Essential, which stops working in December 2026.

How Zendesk bills automated resolutions

An automated resolution is a customer request the AI agent resolved with no human agent stepping in. Since May 18, 2026, Zendesk sorts every AI conversation into one of three tiers:

  • Assisted escalation. The AI collected details or routed the request, then a person finished it. Not billed against your allowance.
  • Contained resolution. The customer didn’t ask for more help, but an LLM check couldn’t confirm the request was actually resolved. Not billed against your allowance.
  • Verified resolution. The customer didn’t ask for more help and the LLM check confirmed the request was satisfactorily resolved. This is the one you pay for.

The check runs when the conversation ends: 72 hours after the first email on email, 2 hours after the first message on messaging (extendable to 72), and at hang-up on voice.

What that means in practice:

  • Overage is on by default. Zendesk’s “Allow overage” setting is the default, so once the allowance runs out, AI agents keep answering and every extra resolution bills at the pay-as-you-go rate. Overage is billed monthly even on an annual contract. The alternative setting pauses AI agents and sends everything to your team.
  • Unused resolutions don’t roll over.
  • A failed handoff can still count. Zendesk’s help center describes a messaging conversation where the AI agent tried to escalate, no agent was available to accept it, so the AI created a follow-up ticket and finished the conversation itself. That conversation showed as an automated resolution. For a small team, “no agent available” is every evening and weekend.
  • The model is still moving. Zendesk is migrating accounts to a “resolution allowance” model where your plan includes a dollar budget instead of a resolution count ($2 per agent a month on Suite Team, $5 on Suite Professional, up to $5,000 a year), and tier pricing for new accounts during the transition is negotiated with sales.

The billing has drawn pushback since it launched. In 2024, admins on Zendesk’s own community forum objected that customers who simply left the chat were being counted as resolved. One 14-agent team reported about 1,300 automated resolutions in 30 days against an allotment of 210, and estimated the change at more than $10,000 a year.

What the bill looks like for a four-agent team

Claire runs a four-person support team for a regional HVAC company. Customers phone about appointments, so she needs after-hours call routing and a phone menu, which Zendesk includes only from Suite Professional. She wants Copilot’s suggested replies for her agents, and the AI agent verifies 250 resolutions a month across email and chat.

Line itemMonthly cost, billed annually
Suite Professional, 4 agents at $115$460
Copilot, 4 agents at $50$200
250 verified resolutions: 40 included, 210 at $1.50 committed$315
Total before phone usage$975

That’s about $11,700 a year, or $1,080 a month if the extra resolutions land as pay-as-you-go. Phone numbers, call minutes and text messaging are add-ons on top, and voice AI agents add per-minute connection and recording charges.

What Zendesk AI needs from you before it resolves anything

Zendesk’s setup guide runs in six steps, and the first one is the work most small teams underestimate:

  1. A knowledge base worth answering from. AI agents generate replies from your help center or an external knowledge source. Zendesk’s advice if you’re starting out is to mine your past tickets for articles to write.
  2. The channels configured: messaging widget, support email, web forms, and a Zendesk voice plan for phone.
  3. The AI agent created, with a brand, knowledge sources, name, tone and default replies.
  4. Use cases and procedures for anything beyond question answering, like refunds or order changes. Without use cases, the AI answers only from knowledge content. Email AI agents must use generative procedures, not scripted dialogues.
  5. Activation on each channel. New AI agents are single-channel, so a team that answered chat and email with one legacy agent builds two.
  6. Ongoing monitoring of the AI agent’s conversations and resolution tiers.

Teams on AI agents - Essential or the legacy bot builder have to rebuild or migrate before both are removed in December 2026. Zendesk sells a recurring “AI Expert” service subscription for help with that.

Where Zendesk AI falls short for a small team

  • The phone basics sit on the $115 plan. Suite Team includes telephony, but business hours, after-hours routing and IVR phone menus are Suite Professional features. Numbers, minutes and text messages are add-ons on both.
  • Voice AI is metered three ways. On top of resolutions, a voice AI agent bills standard telephony minutes, an AI agent connection charge for every minute it’s on the call ($0.005 a minute in USD) and call recording per minute (recording is on by default).
  • The allowance is small at small headcounts. Five agents on Suite Team get 25 resolutions a month, less than one a day, and overage is on unless an admin turns it off.
  • Reviews are rough. Zendesk sits at 1.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot across 736 reviews, though many are from customers of companies that use Zendesk rather than from admins. The admins who do post are blunt: “The setup was confusing and took longer than expected. Definitely not worth the hassle for the price” (July 2026), “the price is high while value is not good” (September 2026), and a years-long customer calling the UI “horribly slow and clunky” (August 2026).

None of that matters much to a 60-agent contact center with an admin and a budget line for AI. It matters a lot to a five-person team whose real gap is the phone ringing at 6:30 pm. For the full field of helpdesks, see our Zendesk alternatives guide and the Zendesk vs Intercom head to head.

Carly: AI on your support line and texts, next to Zendesk

Carly is an AI assistant for businesses. Carly for teams gives it your business line: when nobody on the team can pick up, Carly answers the call, texts back, and answers from your own FAQs, policies and documents. It recognizes the caller from your email and CRM, so a customer who emailed last week isn’t a stranger on the phone. It books the appointment on the right teammate’s real calendar while the customer is still on the line, and hands the conversation to a person when it should. Every call and text lands in one team inbox alongside email, with a switch so Josh can take a thread over and hand it back.

Keep Zendesk for email and chat tickets if it’s working. Carly connects to thousands of apps, Zendesk included, so a workflow can open a Zendesk ticket from a call summary and your queue stays the system of record. If you want a dedicated AI inbox for support email too, Carly can run an email agent with its own address.

The Carly team sets your number up with you, the one customers already call or a new local one, and the phone line is priced on a short call. Beyond the phone line, Carly has free Zapier-style workflows; AI agents from $35/month. Get started with Carly and give it last month’s ten most common support questions. FAQ

What is Zendesk AI?

The AI built into Zendesk’s service plans: AI agents that answer customers on messaging, email, web forms and voice, plus Copilot, an add-on that helps human agents with suggested replies, auto assist and intelligent triage. AI agents are billed per automated resolution above a plan allowance.

How much does Zendesk AI cost?

AI agents come with every plan. Suite Team is $55 per agent a month billed annually ($69 monthly) with 5 automated resolutions per agent a month; Suite Professional is $115 ($149) with 10. Extra resolutions cost $1.50 committed or $2.00 pay-as-you-go, and Copilot is $50 per agent a month from Suite Professional.

What counts as an automated resolution in Zendesk?

A conversation the AI agent handled with no human agent stepping in, where the customer didn’t ask for more help and an LLM review of the transcript confirmed the request was resolved. Zendesk calls these verified resolutions, and only they draw from your allowance. Escalations and unconfirmed “contained” conversations don’t. The review runs 72 hours after the first email, 2 hours after the first chat message by default, or at hang-up on calls.

What is the difference between Zendesk AI agents and Copilot?

AI agents talk to customers and resolve requests on their own. Copilot works for your human agents inside the ticket, suggesting replies and next steps, summarizing tickets and classifying them. AI agents are metered by resolution; Copilot is a per-agent add-on.

Can Zendesk AI agents answer phone calls?

Yes. Voice AI agents became generally available in September 2026 for accounts with Zendesk voice. They answer calls, resolve common requests and escalate to a person with a transcript and summary. They’re billed on automated resolutions plus telephony minutes, a per-minute AI agent connection charge and call recording.

Can I keep Zendesk and still put AI on my phone line?

Yes. Carly answers your business line and texts when your team can’t, recognizes callers from your email and CRM, books on real calendars and hands off to a person in one inbox. It connects to Zendesk, so tickets can still land in your queue. Try Carly on your own support line.

See what people say

"Before Carly, I relied on a Calendly link, but the whole process felt impersonal and not very professional. Carly changed that by handling all the back-and-forth, so I'm no longer stuck in endless email threads trying to line up schedules.

Now Carly reaches out to candidates, shares my real-time availability, lets them pick a slot, then sends a Zoom link and drops it straight into my calendar. She sends reminders to both of us before each call, which has significantly reduced no-shows and last-minute confusion.

On top of scheduling, Carly acts like a full executive assistant, sending me my schedule the night before so I can prepare for each call. It reminds me of the old x.ai assistant, but Carly is noticeably smarter, faster, and better suited to my healthcare recruitment business."
