Can ChatGPT Send Email Attachments? Not Yet—Use These Workarounds

No—ChatGPT’s native Gmail and Outlook sending action does not currently attach files to the outgoing message. ChatGPT can draft a message and, on supported paid web plans, send it after approval, but a file uploaded to the conversation does not become an email attachment.

This is easy to misunderstand because ChatGPT can read files in a chat and can send email. Those are separate capabilities. The email action still lacks the attachment step. A June 2026 hands-on test found that sending worked until the request included a file. See the reported limitation.

What ChatGPT can do

With a supported Gmail or Outlook account connected, ChatGPT can:

write an email;
use context you provide;
address the message;
prepare it for review;
send the message after required approval.

It cannot take a PDF, spreadsheet, image, or other file from the conversation and attach that binary file to the outgoing email.

Workaround 1: attach the file manually

This is the safest option for sensitive or one-off documents.

Ask ChatGPT to write the email.
Have it create a draft rather than send immediately.
Open the draft in Gmail or Outlook.
Attach the correct file.
Verify recipient, subject, message, and attachment.
Send from the mail client.

The obvious downside is that the workflow no longer finishes inside ChatGPT. The upside is that you can inspect the exact file before it leaves.

Workaround 2: send a permissioned cloud-storage link

Upload the file to Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, or another approved file service, configure access, and ask ChatGPT to include the canonical link.

Use a prompt like:

Draft an email to alex@example.com. Include the exact Drive URL below as plain text. Do not rewrite, shorten, or replace it. Do not send until I approve.

Before sending:

open the link in a private browser window;
confirm the recipient has permission;
check whether the link exposes the entire folder or only the intended file;
set an expiration date if your storage provider supports one;
verify that ChatGPT preserved the full URL.

A link is not equivalent to an attachment. It depends on continued access, and recipients may be blocked by their organization or sign-in state.

Workaround 3: use an email workflow that supports attachments

Build the workflow with a test recipient first. Confirm filename, MIME type, access, message body, and routing before enabling it for external recipients.

Do not paste confidential files into public links

“Upload it somewhere and send a link” is not a universal solution. For financial, medical, legal, customer, or internal company documents:

use your organization’s approved storage provider;
restrict access to named recipients;
follow retention and data-handling policy;
avoid “anyone with the link” unless policy allows it;
confirm you are sending from the correct work account.

Convenience does not override the document’s existing access rules.

Why uploading the file to ChatGPT does not work

The uploaded file is available as conversation input. The Gmail or Outlook send action has its own fields and permissions. Unless that action exposes an attachment parameter and accepts the file reference, ChatGPT cannot bridge the two simply because both exist in the same interface.

That is also why asking repeatedly or changing the model does not add an unsupported email field.

Can a Scheduled Task send the attachment later?

No. Scheduling the prompt does not add attachment support. Scheduled Tasks also cannot access files from the project in which the task was created, according to OpenAI’s Scheduled Tasks documentation.

For a recurring report with a file, either send a permissioned link, attach the output manually, or use a workflow system that supports file handling and email attachments.
