Can Claude Send Email Attachments? No, and Here's the Fix

No. Claude can send an email, but it can’t attach a file to it. The Gmail connector sends, replies and forwards after you approve each message, and a file you uploaded to the chat doesn’t travel with the message. The Microsoft 365 connector’s write tools, the ones an administrator has to switch on, don’t support attachments at all. The Claude for Outlook add-in reads attachments well and can’t send anything.

With Carly, Claude sends the file. Add the Carly connector and ask Claude to email the contract, the invoice or the deck, and it goes out as a real attachment from your Gmail or Outlook address.

Why this trips people up

Claude is good with files. Drop in a PDF and it reads it. Ask for a proposal and it writes one. Connect Gmail and it sends email. Those are three separate abilities, and the third one lacks the attachment step. The email goes; the file stays in the chat.

Forwarding is the one case where a file moves: forward an existing message through the Gmail connector and the original message goes along as it was. That’s not the same as attaching the document Claude just drafted for you, which is what most people are trying to do.

On the Microsoft side the answer is written down. The Microsoft 365 connector is read-only by default, and the optional write tools that let Claude send Outlook mail carry an attribution header and no attachments.

Claude's Microsoft 365 connector has write tools: send mail, manage drafts and calendar events, update mailbox settings, create and update files in OneDrive and SharePoint, and post in Microsoft Teams. They are blocked by default for organizations that had the connector before the feature landed, they reject any message carrying an attachment, and every user has limits on how much they can send. Carly sends with attachments, across all of the accounts you connect.

Workaround 1: attach it yourself

Safest for a one-off or a sensitive document.

  1. Ask Claude to write the email and save it as a draft rather than send.
  2. Open the draft in Gmail or Outlook.
  3. Attach the file.
  4. Check the recipient, subject and attachment, then send from the mail client.

You lose the “done from the chat” part, and you gain a look at the exact file before it leaves.

Upload the file to Google Drive, OneDrive or Dropbox, set the sharing you want, and ask Claude to put the link in the message as plain text:

Draft an email to michael@example.com with the Drive link below pasted exactly as written. Don’t shorten or rewrite it. Don’t send until I say so.

Fine for a deck. Awkward for a signed contract, which the other side usually wants as a file in their own inbox.

Workaround 3: have Carly send it

Carly sends real email with real attachments from your own Gmail and Outlook accounts, and Claude can drive it:

  1. Connect your inboxes at carlyassistant.com/integrations.
  2. Click Get the Carly connector, then Connect, and sign in.
  3. Ask Claude:

Email the attached proposal to claire@example.com from my work address, with a two-line note saying the pricing holds until the 30th.

The proposal arrives as an attachment, sent from the address you chose. The same works with a file already in Drive or OneDrive, a PDF Carly generated, or an attachment from another email: “forward the invoice from yesterday’s thread to accounting, with the PO attached.”

Frequently asked questions

Can Claude attach a PDF to an email?

Not through its own connectors. The Gmail connector sends the message without the file, and the Microsoft 365 write tools don’t support attachments. Through Carly, Claude sends the PDF as a real attachment.

Can Claude send attachments from Outlook?

No. The Claude for Outlook add-in drafts and can’t send, and the Microsoft 365 connector’s write tools exclude attachments even once an admin enables them. Carly connects any Outlook account, including personal Outlook.com, and sends with attachments.

Can Claude forward an email that has an attachment?

Through the Gmail connector, forwarding sends the original message along. That moves a file someone already sent you. It doesn’t attach a new file to a message Claude wrote.

Can ChatGPT send email attachments?

No. ChatGPT’s email action has the same gap. See Can ChatGPT send email attachments?

"Before Carly, I relied on a Calendly link, but the whole process felt impersonal and not very professional. Carly changed that by handling all the back-and-forth, so I'm no longer stuck in endless email threads trying to line up schedules.

Now Carly reaches out to candidates, shares my real-time availability, lets them pick a slot, then sends a Zoom link and drops it straight into my calendar. She sends reminders to both of us before each call, which has significantly reduced no-shows and last-minute confusion.

On top of scheduling, Carly acts like a full executive assistant, sending me my schedule the night before so I can prepare for each call. It reminds me of the old x.ai assistant, but Carly is noticeably smarter, faster, and better suited to my healthcare recruitment business."
