Google Drive files being read inside a Claude conversation

Can Claude Access Google Drive? The Honest Answer (2026)

Yes. Claude has an official Google Drive connector, and it reads and writes. It finds files, analyses them, cross-references across documents, and can save new files it generates straight into a folder you pick. The sharp line is not read versus write. It is new files versus existing ones: everything already sitting in your Drive is untouchable.

That distinction catches people out, so here is exactly where it falls.

What access gets you

Google Drive is a first-party connector in Anthropic’s Connectors Directory, part of the Google Workspace set that has been generally available since around February 2026. Connected, Claude can:

  • Find files by describing them, instead of searching a folder tree
  • Analyse and summarize what a document actually says
  • Cross-reference across several files at once
  • Ground its answers in your content rather than the open web
  • Save new files into Drive, dropping a generated spreadsheet or deck into a folder you name
  • Create folders and upload files

“Compare these two contract versions and tell me what changed” is the kind of request this handles well, and it never leaves the chat.

The line: it writes new, it cannot change old

Ask Claude to build a fresh spreadsheet and file it, and it will. Ask it to add this month’s rows to the tracker you already keep, fix a column, rename a batch of files consistently, or move things into the right folders, and there is no tool for it.

Two smaller catches on the create side. Saving files rides on Claude’s file creation and code execution settings, so both need to be on. And what lands is an Office file, .xlsx, .docx, .pptx, rather than a native Google Sheet or Doc.

One Google account

Connector authorization is per identity, not per person. ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini each hold one Google account at a time, so the second inbox is reachable only by replacing the first. Both OpenAI and Anthropic have open feature requests asking for several named accounts on one connector, which is a fair signal that it is not possible today.

A personal @gmail.com Drive and a work Google Workspace Drive are two identities and two grants. Connecting the second replaces the first. Sharing a folder between your own accounts helps for reading and gets unreliable for anything else, since ownership stays with the originating account. The multiple Google Drive accounts in Claude guide covers the way around it.

Setting it up

  1. Open Settings → Connectors in the Claude app or on claude.ai.
  2. Find Google Drive and click Connect.
  3. Sign in with your Google account and approve the permissions.
  4. To let Claude save files back, switch on file creation and code execution in settings.

On a managed Google Workspace account, an administrator may need to approve the connection first.

Nothing fires when a file lands

The unattended-work gap closed when ChatGPT and Claude Cowork added scheduled runs. Their standard schedulers still start from the clock, not arbitrary events in connected apps; API-triggered ChatGPT Workspace Agents require an external event detector and caller.

There is no “when a new file lands in this folder, summarize it and notify the owner.” Claude Cowork’s scheduled tasks genuinely run without you, but on a fixed clock, so an invoice uploaded Tuesday afternoon gets handled at the next scheduled run.

What acting on Drive looks like

Claude’s real gap here is that you have to be there. Every file it creates comes from a sentence you typed, which is fine until the work is “a supplier emails an invoice, it gets filed, the log gets updated,” fifty times a month.

Carly is built to act on the trigger instead:

  • Fires on the email itself. An invoice arrives, Carly pulls the attachment, drops it in the right client folder, appends a row to the running spreadsheet, and replies to confirm receipt.
  • Updates what already exists. Appends to the sheet you keep, renames and refiles existing documents, keeps a folder structure current as work comes in.
  • Runs 24/7 in the cloud, laptop closed.
  • Holds several Google accounts at once, so a personal Drive and a work Drive are one assistant rather than two sessions.
  • Builds the workflow from a plain-English description. It interviews you, then builds it with you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Claude access Google Drive?

Yes. The official Google Drive connector lets Claude find, read, analyse, and cross-reference your files inside a chat, and save new files it generates into a folder you choose.

Can Claude edit files already in my Google Drive?

No. Claude can save a new file, but the connector has no tools for changing, renaming, moving, or reorganizing anything that already exists.

How do I connect Claude to Google Drive?

Settings → Connectors in the Claude app or on claude.ai, find Google Drive, click Connect, and authorize your Google account. Turn on file creation and code execution too if you want Claude to save files back.

Can Claude connect two Google Drive accounts?

No. The connector holds one Google identity, and connecting a second replaces the first. See multiple Google Drive accounts in Claude.

Can Claude organize my Drive as files come in?

No. Organizing means changing files that already exist, which the connector cannot do, and Claude only acts when you ask or on a schedule you set. Carly fires on the event itself, 24/7 in the cloud.

"Before Carly, I relied on a Calendly link, but the whole process felt impersonal and not very professional. Carly changed that by handling all the back-and-forth, so I'm no longer stuck in endless email threads trying to line up schedules.

Now Carly reaches out to candidates, shares my real-time availability, lets them pick a slot, then sends a Zoom link and drops it straight into my calendar. She sends reminders to both of us before each call, which has significantly reduced no-shows and last-minute confusion.

On top of scheduling, Carly acts like a full executive assistant, sending me my schedule the night before so I can prepare for each call. It reminds me of the old x.ai assistant, but Carly is noticeably smarter, faster, and better suited to my healthcare recruitment business."
