A SharePoint document library connected to a Claude conversation

Can Claude Access SharePoint? The Honest Answer (2026)

Yes. Claude reaches SharePoint through Anthropic’s Microsoft 365 connector, and reading works the moment you connect it. Claude can find, read, and summarize your sites, libraries, and pages inside a chat. Writing is a different story: it exists, but it sits behind two separate switches that most people do not control. And nothing in SharePoint can start the work.

Here is what access actually means in practice.

There is no SharePoint connector

That trips people up when they go looking. Anthropic’s Connectors Directory has no standalone SharePoint app. SharePoint arrives inside the Microsoft 365 connector, the single bridge that also covers Outlook, OneDrive, and Teams.

So the question “can Claude access SharePoint” is really “can Claude access your Microsoft tenant,” and the answer follows your existing permissions. Sites you can already open, Claude can read. Sites you cannot, it cannot.

What reading gets you

Connected, Claude can:

  • Find documents across sites and libraries by describing them rather than clicking through site navigation
  • Read and summarize a policy, contract, or page as context in the conversation
  • Search across content and quote what it finds
  • Pull Outlook, OneDrive, and Teams in too, since they ride the same connector

This is the part that works well. “Find the parental leave policy and tell me how notice periods work” is a good use of it.

The write side, and why it usually is not on

On July 7, 2026 Anthropic added write tools to the Microsoft 365 connector. With them enabled, Claude can create and update files in your OneDrive and SharePoint document libraries.

Claude's Microsoft 365 connector gained write tools in July 2026 — it can draft and send mail, manage calendar events, and create or update files in OneDrive and SharePoint. They are off by default, reject anything with an attachment, and need you in the conversation: a scheduled task can read your mail, but it will not send on your behalf while you are away.

Two gates, not one, and they belong to different people. A Microsoft Entra admin has to consent to the expanded permissions, and your Claude organization has to switch them on. If you are a contractor working in a client’s tenant, you administer neither.

Even with writes on, the scope is files in document libraries. Publishing or editing SharePoint pages, and changing site structure, are not covered.

Setting it up

  1. Open Settings → Connectors in the Claude app or on claude.ai.
  2. Find Microsoft 365 and click Connect.
  3. Sign in with your Microsoft account and approve the permissions. Your tenant admin may need to allow the app first.
  4. Ask Claude to find something in SharePoint to confirm reads work.

If Claude reads happily but refuses to change anything, that is the default state rather than a fault.

One identity at a time

The connector authorizes a single Microsoft identity. Many sites inside that one tenant are reachable, because that is a permissions question. A second tenant is not, because that is a second login. Consultants with a client tenant alongside their own hit this immediately, and Claude’s account switcher does not help, since separate logins keep separate connectors. The multiple SharePoint sites in Claude guide covers the workaround.

Nothing fires when a document lands

This is the limit that outlasts the others, because no admin can turn it off.

ChatGPT Scheduled Tasks and Claude Cowork both run unattended on timers. Their ordinary task schedulers do not subscribe directly to arbitrary events in connected business apps. ChatGPT Workspace Agents can be invoked through an API, but an upstream system must still detect the event and call it.

There is no “when a contract is uploaded, summarize it and route it to the account owner.” A Claude Cowork scheduled task will genuinely sweep a library on a timer without you, but a document uploaded Tuesday afternoon waits for Wednesday’s run.

What acting on SharePoint looks like

If the job is “something should happen when this document arrives,” that is a different shape of tool. Carly is an AI executive assistant built to fire on the event:

  • A signed contract lands in a library. Carly reads it, files it against the right client, puts the renewal date on a calendar, notifies the account owner with a summary, and emails the counterparty a confirmation from your address.
  • A policy is revised. Everyone affected gets a plain-English note on what actually changed, instead of an “FYI, updated” nobody opens.
  • It authorizes per account on your side, so a client tenant you were granted access to becomes usable without waiting on a rollout decision inside someone else’s organization.
  • It builds the workflow from a plain-English description. No prompt engineering.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Claude access SharePoint?

Yes, through the Microsoft 365 connector. Reading works as soon as you connect and respects your existing SharePoint permissions. Writing files requires a Microsoft Entra admin’s consent plus enablement in your Claude organization, and both are off by default.

Can Claude edit SharePoint documents?

It can create and update files in document libraries if an admin has enabled the write tools added in July 2026. Editing SharePoint pages or changing site structure is not covered either way.

Why can Claude read my SharePoint but not change anything?

Because write tools ship off by default. A refusal to edit is expected behaviour, not a bug. Getting writes on takes two approvals, one from a Microsoft Entra admin and one from whoever administers your Claude organization.

Can Claude access SharePoint in two different tenants?

Not at once. The Microsoft 365 connector holds one Microsoft identity, so a second tenant is a separate connection. See multiple SharePoint sites in Claude.

Can Claude watch a SharePoint library and act when a file arrives?

No. Connectors have no event triggers, so nothing starts because a document landed. A scheduled sweep on a fixed clock is the closest Claude gets. Carly fires on the event itself, 24/7 in the cloud.

See what people say

"Before Carly, I relied on a Calendly link, but the whole process felt impersonal and not very professional. Carly changed that by handling all the back-and-forth, so I'm no longer stuck in endless email threads trying to line up schedules.

Now Carly reaches out to candidates, shares my real-time availability, lets them pick a slot, then sends a Zoom link and drops it straight into my calendar. She sends reminders to both of us before each call, which has significantly reduced no-shows and last-minute confusion.

On top of scheduling, Carly acts like a full executive assistant, sending me my schedule the night before so I can prepare for each call. It reminds me of the old x.ai assistant, but Carly is noticeably smarter, faster, and better suited to my healthcare recruitment business."
