This is the path that feels seamless, because inside Google’s own file formats there is no attachment to extract. The document is already something Gemini can read.
Route three: arbitrary attachments sitting in your mailbox
Here is where the answer gets narrower than people expect.
Through the Gemini app’s Google Workspace connection, Google describes the capability as summarizing, answering questions, and finding information across Gmail, Docs and Drive. The documented exclusions are specific: Gemini cannot access comments or images in Docs or Gmail. Pulling the contents of an arbitrary PDF, spreadsheet or scan out of a message and reasoning over it is not something Google documents as part of that connection.
So if your mental model is “the contract came in as a PDF attachment, Gemini will read it and tell me the renewal date”, treat that as unverified rather than assumed. Download it and use route one, or keep the document in Drive and use route two.
One thing worth noting for context: Google’s enterprise product does do this explicitly. The Microsoft Outlook connector for Gemini Enterprise lists download attachments as a supported action, capped at 25 MB. That is an administrator-configured connector on a separate paid product, not something in the Gemini app, which tells you the capability exists in Google’s stack and simply is not wired into the consumer surface.
The bigger constraint
Even where reading works, it happens because you asked, in a window you opened.
