ChatGPT + Lunch Money: How to Connect Them in 2026

Yes, ChatGPT can work with Lunch Money, but not through an official plugin: as of September 2026 there is no Lunch Money plugin in ChatGPT and Lunch Money hasn’t shipped its own MCP server. You connect it by adding a community MCP server, built on Lunch Money’s public API, as a custom plugin in ChatGPT’s Developer mode. Once connected, ChatGPT can answer questions about your transactions, budgets, and recurring expenses, and (with the right server) edit them. The catch is timing: ChatGPT reaches Lunch Money when you ask, and no Lunch Money event can start it on its own.

What ChatGPT can do with Lunch Money

Lunch Money’s developer API is one of the most complete in personal finance. Once ChatGPT is connected, you can:

  • Ask real spending questions. “How much did we spend on restaurants last month?” comes back from your actual transactions.
  • Check the budget. The v2 API has a summary endpoint that returns each category’s budget against actual spend for a period, so “where are we over this month?” works.
  • Review recurring expenses. List subscriptions and bills Lunch Money has detected, including items it suggests but you haven’t confirmed yet.
  • Clean up transactions. Recategorize, tag, split, or group transactions, and add manual ones. ChatGPT asks you to confirm each write action by default.
  • Look across accounts. Manual accounts, Plaid-linked bank accounts, crypto, and balance history are all readable.

How to connect ChatGPT to Lunch Money

ChatGPT only talks to remote MCP servers over HTTP. Most Lunch Money servers were built for Claude Desktop and run on your own computer, so the real decision is which remote endpoint you use.

  1. Create a Lunch Money access token. In the web app, open the Developers page, give the token a label, and request it. It is shown once, so copy it somewhere safe. Lunch Money’s own getting started guide suggests trying things on a test budget first, because API changes are permanent.
  2. Pick a remote server.
    • Read-only and hosted: n3wth/lunchmoney-mcp runs a hosted endpoint in beta. It can read transactions, accounts, budgets, and recurring items, and it cannot edit anything. Its ChatGPT directory review is still pending, so you add it by URL.
    • Full read and write, self-hosted: akutishevsky/lunchmoney-mcp is the server Lunch Money’s AI guide suggests if you’re unsure where to start, and it covers the whole v2 API. It runs locally by default; lunchmoney-mcp-cloudflare wraps it as a Cloudflare Worker with sign-in in front, which gives ChatGPT a URL to call.
  3. Turn on Developer mode in ChatGPT. Go to Settings → Security and login and switch on Developer mode. OpenAI lists it for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education accounts on the web.
  4. Add the server. Open Plugins, click Add, choose Create MCP App, and paste the server URL. Complete the sign-in it asks for.
  5. Test with a read. Ask “list my Lunch Money accounts” before you let it change anything.

What changed in Lunch Money’s v2 API

Check which API an older server or tutorial targets. Lunch Money’s v2 API is not backwards compatible with v1, and the migration guide lists what changed. The parts that matter for AI tools:

  • /assets became /manual_accounts, and /recurring_items became /recurring.
  • The old budgets endpoint was replaced by /summary, which follows Lunch Money’s newer budgeting feature. Setting budget amounts arrived in February 2026.
  • Tags got full create, update, and delete support, and transactions can be deleted through the API.
  • GET /transactions accepts created_since and updated_since, which makes “what’s new since yesterday?” a cheap question.
  • The changelog shows crypto and balance history endpoints added on July 31, 2026, and account and user settings on September 28, 2026.

A server still on v1 misses all of this, and the v1 budgets endpoint no longer works with the new budgeting feature.

The limits that matter

  • You’re the one wiring it up. A community server holds a token that can read, and possibly change, your whole budget. Create one token per tool so you can revoke it cleanly, and pick the read-only server if you only want answers.
  • No Lunch Money trigger. ChatGPT’s scheduled tasks can run a prompt on a clock, and tasks created in ChatGPT Work can use plugins. OpenAI documents event-triggered tasks only for Gmail, Slack and GitHub events, so “when a transaction over $500 posts” has nothing to fire on.
  • Custom plugins in unattended runs are fragile. A plugin that works in a live chat can fail inside a scheduled task over permissions or approvals. See why a connector is unavailable in a scheduled task.
  • Bank sync stays in Lunch Money. ChatGPT reads what Lunch Money has imported; a full-access server can request a Plaid refresh, but the bank connection lives in Lunch Money.

Lunch Money work that runs on its own: Carly

Once the goal is “tell me without being asked,” you want an assistant with standing workflows, not a chat.

Carly is an AI executive assistant that works over email and text. It runs workflows in the cloud on a schedule or when an email, calendar event, or form comes in, with no chat open. You set them up by describing what you want in plain English.

Connecting Lunch Money to Carly takes one step: create a Lunch Money access token on the Developers page, open carlyassistant.com/integrations, and paste it in. Carly reaches any app with a public API through your own key, so there is no server to host.

Then ask for things like:

  • “Every Sunday at 6pm, text me the categories I overspent this week and by how much.”
  • “Every morning, check for new transactions over $500 and email me the list.”
  • “On the 1st, email Emily and me last month’s spending by category, with anything uncategorized flagged.”
  • “When a receipt email lands in my inbox, find the matching Lunch Money transaction and add a note.”

Carly connects to thousands of apps, so the same workflow can send the recap through Gmail or Outlook, drop a reminder on your calendar, or log a row in Google Sheets. Pricing: Free Zapier-style workflows; AI agents from $35/month.

If you still like asking questions in ChatGPT, add the Carly plugin and set up those workflows from inside a chat.

ChatGPT with a Lunch Money server is a good analyst for the questions you think to ask. Carly is the assistant that keeps checking on Tuesday, when you didn’t.

Frequently asked questions

Does ChatGPT have an official Lunch Money integration? No. As of September 2026 there is no Lunch Money plugin in ChatGPT and no official Lunch Money MCP server. Lunch Money’s developer docs point users to community servers, which you add to ChatGPT as a custom plugin in Developer mode.

How do I get a Lunch Money API key? Open the Developers page in the Lunch Money web app, label the token, and request it. It is shown only once, and Lunch Money recommends one token per tool.

Can ChatGPT edit my Lunch Money transactions? Yes, if the server you connect exposes write tools. The akutishevsky server covers the full v2 API, including creating, updating, splitting, and deleting transactions. ChatGPT asks you to confirm write actions by default. The hosted n3wth server is read-only.

Can ChatGPT alert me when a big transaction posts? Not from Lunch Money directly. ChatGPT’s event-triggered tasks support Gmail, Slack, and GitHub events. For “email me anything over $500,” connect Lunch Money to Carly with your token and set a scheduled check.

Should a new Lunch Money integration use the v1 or v2 API? v2. Lunch Money says new projects should use v2, which is where budgets, the summary endpoint, and every 2026 addition live. v1 still answers at its old address.

"Before Carly, I relied on a Calendly link, but the whole process felt impersonal and not very professional. Carly changed that by handling all the back-and-forth, so I'm no longer stuck in endless email threads trying to line up schedules.

Now Carly reaches out to candidates, shares my real-time availability, lets them pick a slot, then sends a Zoom link and drops it straight into my calendar. She sends reminders to both of us before each call, which has significantly reduced no-shows and last-minute confusion.

On top of scheduling, Carly acts like a full executive assistant, sending me my schedule the night before so I can prepare for each call. It reminds me of the old x.ai assistant, but Carly is noticeably smarter, faster, and better suited to my healthcare recruitment business."
