Claude + Sunsama: What the Integration Can (and Can't) Do in 2026
Sunsama now ships its own official MCP server, so connecting Claude to your daily planner is a genuinely supported, first-party path — not a hack. Sunsama released the server at https://api.sunsama.com/mcp in early 2026, and it lets Claude read your day, create and update tasks, manage subtasks, and organize streams. Before that, the only option was a community-built MCP server and an unofficial API wrapper. Both still exist, but the official route is now the one to reach for.
Here’s each route, when to pick it, and what to use when you want Sunsama work that happens without you at the keyboard.
Route 1: Sunsama’s official MCP server (the one to use)
This is the first-party path. Sunsama hosts a remote MCP server that authenticates with OAuth, so you never paste a password into a config file.
Claude Code: one command adds it.

Claude Pro / Team / Max (web + desktop): add it as a custom connector. Go to Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector, paste https://api.sunsama.com/mcp, and authenticate. Because it’s a remote OAuth connector, this works from claude.ai in the browser — not just the desktop app.
Once connected, Claude can create tasks with notes, time estimates, and due dates; read your tasks by day and filter by completion; update or complete tasks; manage subtasks; and pull user and stream info. One current gap worth knowing: Claude can start and stop the Sunsama timer and see what’s being timed, but the actual time-tracking records aren’t exposed through the server yet.
Route 2: The community MCP server (now archived)
Before the official server, most people used robertn702/mcp-sunsama (around 52 stars), which exposed 20-plus tools across task, user, and stream management. It supported stdio for Claude Desktop — using SUNSAMA_EMAIL / SUNSAMA_PASSWORD env vars — and an HTTP transport with basic auth.
It worked well, but the maintainer archived the repo on July 9, 2026, and it’s now read-only, clearly superseded by Sunsama’s official server. If you’re starting fresh, use Route 1. The same author also maintains robertn702/sunsama-api (a TypeScript wrapper) and robertn702/sunsama-relay (a self-hosted REST relay), which are handy if you want to script against Sunsama outside of Claude.
Route 3: The unofficial API, for custom automation
Sunsama has never shipped a fully public REST API — it’s been a long-standing request on their roadmap. What exists is the reverse-engineered GraphQL/HTTP surface that the community wrappers above wrap. If you want Claude Code to build a script that touches Sunsama outside an MCP session (say, a nightly cleanup), point it at sunsama-api or run sunsama-relay and have Claude call the relay’s REST endpoints. Just know you’re leaning on community-maintained access to a private API, not a documented contract Sunsama promises to keep stable.
The limits that actually matter
- No triggers. Every one of these routes runs inside a chat or Claude Code session you open. Nothing fires because it’s 6am, or because a task rolled over, or because a calendar event landed. You have to be there and ask.
- Laptop-bound. Anything scheduled or recurring depends on your machine and your session being awake. Close the laptop and nothing runs.
- The web connector helps, but you still initiate. The official remote MCP does reach claude.ai on the web (a real improvement over local-only stdio setups), yet it’s still request-response — Claude acts only when you prompt it.
- Timer records aren’t fully exposed. If your workflow depends on reading logged time, that data isn’t available through the server yet.
Claude + Sunsama is excellent for planning and reorganizing your day in conversation. It’s not built for Sunsama work that has to happen on its own while you’re offline.
