How to Edit a Message in Teams (2026)

You can edit or delete any message you’ve sent in Microsoft Teams — in a chat or a channel. Edited messages show a small Edited label, and deleted ones leave a “This message has been deleted” placeholder. Here’s how.

Edit a Sent Message

  1. Hover over your message.
  2. Click More options (the ).
  3. Select Edit.
  4. Change the text — you can also adjust formatting, mentions, and emoji.
  5. Press Enter, or click the checkmark, to save.

The message updates in place and shows an Edited marker so people know it changed.

Tip: to edit your most recent message quickly, click in the message box and press the Up arrow key.

Delete a Sent Message

  1. Hover over your message.
  2. Click More options (the ).
  3. Select Delete.

The message is replaced with “This message has been deleted.” If it was a mistake, click Undo right away (the option appears briefly after deleting).

Troubleshooting

I don’t see an Edit option

You can only edit messages you sent. There’s no Edit on other people’s messages. Also confirm your admin hasn’t disabled editing — some organizations turn off editing and deleting via Teams policy.

My organization won’t let me edit or delete

Editing and deleting are controlled by messaging policies set by your IT admin. If the options are missing for all your messages, that policy is likely off. Contact your admin.

Can people still see what I changed?

Others see the current text plus an Edited label — they don’t see the old version in the normal view. For compliance, however, message history may be retained behind the scenes by your organization.

I deleted a message by accident

Click Undo immediately if it’s still showing. If the undo window has passed, the message can’t be self-restored — you’d need to repost it.

How do I edit my last message fast?

With your cursor in an empty message box, press the Up arrow to open your most recent message for editing.

"Before Carly, I relied on a Calendly link, but the whole process felt impersonal and not very professional. Carly changed that by handling all the back-and-forth, so I'm no longer stuck in endless email threads trying to line up schedules.

Now Carly reaches out to candidates, shares my real-time availability, lets them pick a slot, then sends a Zoom link and drops it straight into my calendar. She sends reminders to both of us before each call, which has significantly reduced no-shows and last-minute confusion.

On top of scheduling, Carly acts like a full executive assistant, sending me my schedule the night before so I can prepare for each call. It reminds me of the old x.ai assistant, but Carly is noticeably smarter, faster, and better suited to my healthcare recruitment business."
