How to Mute on Teams (2026)

Muting in Microsoft Teams is one click — but there’s also a keyboard shortcut, a push-to-talk trick, and organizer controls for muting everyone else. Here’s the full set, on desktop and mobile.

Mute and Unmute Yourself

  1. On the meeting toolbar, click the microphone icon.
  2. A slash through the mic means you’re muted.
  3. Click it again to unmute.

Keyboard shortcut: Ctrl + Shift + M (Windows) or ⌘ + Shift + M (Mac) toggles mute.

Push-to-talk: when muted, hold Ctrl + Spacebar (Windows) or ⌘ + Spacebar (Mac) to talk, then release to go back to muted. Perfect for a quick reply.

Mute on Mobile (iOS/Android)

  1. Tap the screen to show controls.
  2. Tap the microphone icon to mute or unmute.

Teams may also auto-mute you when you join a larger meeting — just tap the mic to speak.

Mute Other People (Organizer / Presenter)

Only the organizer and presenters can mute others:

  • Mute everyone: open Participants > Mute all.
  • Mute one person: hover their name in Participants > More options (…) > Mute participant.

You can’t unmute someone for them — Teams only lets you mute. The person taps their own mic to come back.

Stop Attendees From Unmuting

For presentations and webinars:

  1. Open Participants > More actions (…) at the top, or meeting options.
  2. Turn on Don’t allow attendees to unmute (hard mute).
  3. Attendees can raise a hand to request to speak; you re-enable their mic when ready.

Troubleshooting

People say they can’t hear me

Check the mic isn’t slashed, then confirm the right microphone device is selected: More (…) > Settings > Device settings > Microphone.

I’m muted automatically every meeting

Teams auto-mutes you in larger meetings to cut noise. Just unmute when it’s your turn — or change it on the pre-join screen before joining.

The mute shortcut doesn’t work

The Teams meeting window must be focused. Click into it first. The shortcut won’t fire from your browser or another app.

I can’t unmute — it’s blocked

The organizer enabled Don’t allow attendees to unmute. Raise your hand to request to speak; they’ll let you unmute.

Background noise even when “muted”

Confirm you’re actually muted (slash on the mic). For extra quiet, turn on noise suppression: Settings > Device settings > Noise suppression > High.

"Before Carly, I relied on a Calendly link, but the whole process felt impersonal and not very professional. Carly changed that by handling all the back-and-forth, so I'm no longer stuck in endless email threads trying to line up schedules.

Now Carly reaches out to candidates, shares my real-time availability, lets them pick a slot, then sends a Zoom link and drops it straight into my calendar. She sends reminders to both of us before each call, which has significantly reduced no-shows and last-minute confusion.

On top of scheduling, Carly acts like a full executive assistant, sending me my schedule the night before so I can prepare for each call. It reminds me of the old x.ai assistant, but Carly is noticeably smarter, faster, and better suited to my healthcare recruitment business."
