A terminal session reaching personal Gmail and work Outlook mailboxes through one Carly connection

Can Claude Code Connect to Multiple Email Accounts?

One of each, at most. Claude Code borrows the connectors on your claude.ai account, and those hold a single Gmail account and a single Microsoft 365 work account. A second address of either kind replaces the first, and personal Outlook.com addresses can’t connect at all.

With Carly, Claude Code gets all of them. Add the Carly connector once, and every session reads, searches, drafts and sends across all of your Gmail and Outlook inboxes together.

Do this instead

  1. Connect every inbox at carlyassistant.com/integrations: Gmail and Outlook, personal and work, your own domains and your clients’.
  2. Click Get the Carly connector, then Connect, and sign in with your Carly account. Claude Code picks up your claude.ai connectors when you sign in with your Claude subscription.
  3. Ask across all of them at once:

Check all my inboxes for anything from the auditors this week and list what still needs a reply.

Prefer the terminal? Register Carly directly instead of step 2:

claude mcp add --transport http --scope user carly https://carlyassistant.com/mcp/
claude mcp login carly

--scope user loads it in every project. That’s the whole setup. Get started at carlyassistant.com.

What Claude Code can hold on its own

Claude Code reaches mail two ways: the claude.ai connectors that load with a subscription login, and MCP servers you register yourself. The connectors are one account per provider:

Claude Code on its ownClaude Code + Carly
Gmail accounts at onceOneAll of them
Microsoft 365 work accounts at onceOneAll of them
Personal Outlook.com or HotmailCan’t connectYes
Mailboxes in two Microsoft tenantsNoYes
Starts work when mail arrivesNoYes
Add a fourth inbox laterNew server and OAuth appConnect it, no config change

One connector, one account. That is still the shape in Claude and Gemini. The Gmail or Google Workspace connection authorizes a single account, so a second account overwrites the first instead of sitting beside it. Anyone running a personal address and a work address does the disconnect and reconnect dance to move between them. Connect all of them to Carly instead and the dance stops.

Why one mail server per account doesn’t hold up

The do-it-yourself route is a separate mail MCP server for each address, each with its own Google Cloud project or Microsoft Entra app behind it. Three inboxes means three server entries, two OAuth apps and three tokens that expire on their own schedules. Open issues on the Claude Code GitHub repository describe exactly that: tool calls that start failing with no warning when an OAuth token goes stale, and a custom server reporting “Connection expired” daily despite a valid refresh token.

Carly is one entry and one sign-in for every mailbox. Adding the client’s inbox next quarter happens on the Carly side, and your Claude Code config never changes.

What runs when the terminal is closed

A session ends when you close the window. Your mail doesn’t stop. Carly watches every inbox you connect and starts work the moment a message lands, so these keep running with no session open:

  • Text me when something urgent arrives in any inbox: a real person waiting, a deadline, money on the line.
  • Label and file every message with your existing Gmail labels or Outlook categories.
  • Draft replies in your voice to the emails that need you, saved for review.
  • Open a GitHub issue or Linear ticket from a bug report that arrives by email.
  • Send a morning brief that covers every inbox, grouped by account.

Claude Code routines run on a schedule, a GitHub event or an API call, never on an email arriving, so this is the part Carly adds. Set them up from a Claude chat or at carlyassistant.com/workflows, as free Zapier-style workflows. Carly connects to thousands of apps, so the far end can be anything you use.

What one session can do once Carly is connected

  • Search every inbox in one question, Gmail and Outlook, with no reauthorizing.
  • Draft and send from the right address, attachments included.
  • Answer a shared mailbox like billing@ as a real mailbox (shared mailboxes in Claude).
  • Check every calendar before booking anything.
  • Script it. Once you’ve signed in interactively, claude -p runs inherit the stored token.

Frequently asked questions

Can Claude Code read my email?

Yes, through the Gmail and Microsoft 365 connectors on your claude.ai account, one account each. Add the Carly connector and it reads all of your inboxes at once.

Can Claude Code connect two Gmail accounts?

Not through the built-in connector, where a second Google sign-in replaces the first. Connect both to Carly and add the Carly connector once, and Claude Code reaches both together.

Can Claude Code use Gmail and Outlook at the same time?

Yes, one of each natively. Through Carly, it’s every Gmail and every Outlook account, including personal Outlook.com addresses and mailboxes in different Microsoft tenants.

Do I need to run my own MCP server?

No. Carly is a hosted server, so there’s nothing to deploy and no OAuth app to maintain. One command or one click adds it.

Will it work in scripts and CI?

Sign in once interactively with claude mcp login carly, and later claude -p runs use the stored token. For work that should happen when mail arrives, use a Carly workflow instead.

How many inboxes can Carly hold?

As many as you connect at carlyassistant.com/integrations.

See what people say

"Before Carly, I relied on a Calendly link, but the whole process felt impersonal and not very professional. Carly changed that by handling all the back-and-forth, so I'm no longer stuck in endless email threads trying to line up schedules.

Now Carly reaches out to candidates, shares my real-time availability, lets them pick a slot, then sends a Zoom link and drops it straight into my calendar. She sends reminders to both of us before each call, which has significantly reduced no-shows and last-minute confusion.

On top of scheduling, Carly acts like a full executive assistant, sending me my schedule the night before so I can prepare for each call. It reminds me of the old x.ai assistant, but Carly is noticeably smarter, faster, and better suited to my healthcare recruitment business."
