Can Claude Access Outlook? What Works, What Needs Admin

Yes, with two conditions. Claude reaches Outlook through its Microsoft 365 connector, which works on a work account on a Microsoft Entra tenant and reads your mail, calendar, Teams, SharePoint and OneDrive. Reading is on by default. Sending and organizing need write tools that a Microsoft Entra administrator has to consent to, and even then there are no attachments. Personal Outlook.com and Hotmail addresses can’t connect at all. There’s also the Claude for Outlook add-in, which works inside the Outlook window on the thread you have open.

With Carly, Claude gets every Outlook account, personal or work, and it sends. Connect your Outlook accounts to Carly, add the Carly connector to Claude, and it works across all of them, no admin ticket and no write-tools flag.

The two ways Claude touches Outlook

The Microsoft 365 connector lives in claude.ai. Connect it and Claude can search and summarize your Outlook mail, check your calendar, read Teams messages and pull files from SharePoint and OneDrive. It holds one work account. Anthropic’s own setup guide rules out personal Microsoft accounts.

The Claude for Outlook add-in runs inside Outlook, on paid Claude plans. It summarizes the thread in front of you, reads the attachments on it, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF, and drafts replies and meeting invites in your voice. Every draft lands unsent, for you to send.

Reading is on, writing is gated

Out of the box the connector is read-only. Write tools arrived in July 2026 and let Claude send and organize mail and update mailbox settings, but they’re off by default:

Claude's Microsoft 365 connector has write tools: send mail, manage drafts and calendar events, update mailbox settings, create and update files in OneDrive and SharePoint, and post in Microsoft Teams. They are blocked by default for organizations that had the connector before the feature landed, they reject any message carrying an attachment, and every user has limits on how much they can send. Carly sends with attachments, across all of the accounts you connect.

So on a typical work account, “reply to Josh and tell him Thursday works” produces a draft you send yourself, until an admin has switched the write tools on for your organization. On a personal account it produces nothing, because the account can’t connect.

Two more limits hold on every Claude surface. The connector can search a shared mailbox you’re delegated to, but it can’t send from support@ or bookings@ as its own address. And nothing fires when a message arrives:

ChatGPT can start a task from an event, but only when the app's plugin supports it. OpenAI documents three: a new Gmail message, a new Slack message and GitHub pull request activity. On September 29, 2026 it said other supported plugins can start automations too, without publishing which. Claude's scheduled tasks still run on a clock alone. A deal moving, a form coming in, an invoice clearing: neither one promises to wake up for any of it. Carly watches all of them, across the thousands of apps it connects to.

What you get with Carly in the middle

Carly connects to Outlook the way any connected app does, through Microsoft’s standard consent screen, on personal and work accounts alike. Then Claude talks to Carly:

  1. Connect every Outlook account at carlyassistant.com/integrations. Personal Outlook.com, your work tenant, a client’s tenant, a shared mailbox.
  2. Click Get the Carly connector, then Connect, and sign in.
  3. Ask Claude across all of them: “What came in across my inboxes this morning that needs a reply?” or “Send Claire the signed lease from my work address with the PDF attached.”

The arrival part is where the hours go. Carly watches each Outlook inbox and runs your rules the moment mail lands: text you when something urgent arrives, file new mail into the Outlook folders you already use, clear promotional email, draft replies to the threads that need you. They run as free Zapier-style workflows, and Claude can set them up for you once the connector is added. Watch the Outlook walkthrough or get started.

If your Microsoft tenant shows “Need admin approval” when you connect, the fix is one screen: fix Need admin approval in Microsoft 365.

Frequently asked questions

Can Claude read my Outlook emails?

Yes, through the Microsoft 365 connector on a work account, and through the Claude for Outlook add-in on the thread you have open. Personal Outlook.com accounts can’t connect; connect those to Carly and Claude reads them through the Carly connector.

Can Claude send emails from Outlook?

Only if a Microsoft Entra admin enables the connector’s write tools, and then with no attachments. The add-in can’t send at all. Through Carly, Claude sends from any Outlook account, with attachments. See Can Claude send emails from Outlook?

Can Claude access my Outlook calendar?

Yes, the connector reads your calendar and the add-in drafts invites. Creating and moving events on more than one calendar, or across Google and Outlook, goes through Carly. See Can Claude connect to multiple Outlook calendars?

Can Claude connect to two Outlook accounts?

One. A second sign-in replaces the first. Carly holds all of them. See Can Claude connect to multiple Outlook accounts?

Does Claude work with a personal Outlook.com account?

Not through the Microsoft 365 connector, which needs a work account on a Microsoft business plan. Connect the personal account to Carly and Claude reaches it beside your work mail.

"Before Carly, I relied on a Calendly link, but the whole process felt impersonal and not very professional. Carly changed that by handling all the back-and-forth, so I'm no longer stuck in endless email threads trying to line up schedules.

Now Carly reaches out to candidates, shares my real-time availability, lets them pick a slot, then sends a Zoom link and drops it straight into my calendar. She sends reminders to both of us before each call, which has significantly reduced no-shows and last-minute confusion.

On top of scheduling, Carly acts like a full executive assistant, sending me my schedule the night before so I can prepare for each call. It reminds me of the old x.ai assistant, but Carly is noticeably smarter, faster, and better suited to my healthcare recruitment business."
