ChatGPT + Quo (OpenPhone) Integration: Setup and Limits
Yes, ChatGPT works with Quo (formerly OpenPhone) through Quo’s own plugin. Quo has been in ChatGPT’s directory since May 2026. Install it, sign in with Quo, and ChatGPT can read your texts, missed calls, voicemail and call transcripts, keep contacts and tasks up to date, and text from your Quo number after you approve. It can’t place or answer a call, and nothing that happens in Quo can start it. For AI calls and texts from ChatGPT, add Carly Teams.
What Quo offers ChatGPT today
Quo launched its ChatGPT app on May 19, 2026. When OpenAI folded the app directory into the Plugins directory in July, Quo moved with it, so search Quo under Plugins. Older posts that say “OpenPhone” mean the same company. It renamed itself Quo in September 2025.
Under the hood it’s Quo’s hosted MCP server. It signs in with OAuth, so there’s no API key to copy, and it acts as the Quo user who signed in. Quo says it works on every Quo plan: Starter, Business and Scale. ChatGPT gets the same tools Claude does.
Ignore the community OpenPhone servers on GitHub. Quo’s MCP security guide says to connect only to its hosted server and to prefer the official plugin inside ChatGPT.
What ChatGPT can do with the Quo plugin
Ask ChatGPT to:
- Summarize your texts for one contact, one group thread or a whole inbox, filtered by date or by the teammate who replied. Ask “What are prospects asking about most this week?”
- List missed calls, with the voicemail transcript and a recording link when the caller left one.
- Read call transcripts. These need a Business or Scale plan, with transcription on for that number.
- Send a text to one person, start a shared group thread of 2 to 10, or send separate private texts to 2 to 40 people, up to 1,600 characters each.
- Look up and edit contacts, and read or add contact notes.
- Create and assign tasks tied to a specific call or conversation, then mark them done.
Quo says ChatGPT asks for your approval before it sends any text or creates a contact. Every tool is in Quo’s MCP tool list.
How to connect ChatGPT to Quo
- Log in to the right Quo workspace in your browser first. The plugin links whichever account is signed in.
- Open Plugins in the ChatGPT sidebar and search for Quo. Quo’s guide says to do this on chatgpt.com, not the desktop or phone app.
- Click Install plugin, then Connect. Sign in with Quo and click Allow.
- Use it in a chat. Pick Quo from the + menu in the message box, @-mention it, or just name Quo in your request.
- Start with a read. Ask “Who do I need to call back from the main line?” before you send anything.
Screenshots of each step are in Quo’s ChatGPT setup guide.
Quo missing or blocked? Your company may restrict plugins, so ask your ChatGPT admin to allow it. You can also add Quo’s server by hand: on the Plugins page click Add, choose Create MCP App, name it Quo, paste https://mcp.quo.com/mcp, choose OAuth and sign in. If Create MCP App isn’t on the menu, turn on Developer mode under Settings → Security and login. Quo recommends the official plugin wherever you can install it.
Can ChatGPT make calls through Quo?
No. The plugin has no tool that places or answers a call, and Quo’s public API has no way to start one either. ChatGPT reads calls after they end and never joins one.
Quo’s own voice AI, Sona, answers inbound calls inside Quo’s call flow, takes messages and transfers callers, but you set it up in Quo rather than from ChatGPT. Our Quo AI guide covers what it does.
The limits that matter
- No Quo trigger. OpenAI’s event-triggered tasks fire on Gmail, Slack and GitHub events, and Quo doesn’t document any events for its plugin. Quo can send a webhook the moment a call ends, but ChatGPT has no place to receive it. A scheduled task can check Quo on a timer instead.
- Texts draw on credits. Reading is free. Texts sent through ChatGPT count as API messages: $0.01 per US or Canada segment, paid from prepaid credits you top up in Quo. With no credits, the text doesn’t send. Texting US numbers also needs approved carrier registration.
- Same access as the person who signed in. The plugin reaches every inbox your Quo user can, with no separate permission layer. If ChatGPT only needs the support line, connect a user that only has the support line.
- A text can carry hidden orders. Quo warns that messages, transcripts and contact fields can contain instructions written by an outsider. Treat what ChatGPT reads as data, and check every send it proposes.
Quo work that runs on its own: Carly
Carly runs workflows in the cloud on a schedule, or when an email, form or calendar event comes in. No chat needs to be open. You write each one in plain English.
Connecting Quo is one step: at carlyassistant.com/integrations, go to MCP servers, add Quo’s server (the same address as above) and sign in with Quo. Or a Quo owner or admin creates an API key under Workspace settings → API and pastes it there. Then ask for things like:
- “Every weekday at 5pm, find today’s Quo texts nobody answered and email Emily a list with a suggested reply for each.”
- “Before each sales meeting on my calendar, pull the last month of Quo calls and texts with that person and email me a short brief.”
- “Every Monday, read last week’s Quo call transcripts, pull out each quote request and add it as a row in our Google Sheet.”
Carly connects to thousands of apps, so the same workflow can also update your CRM or book the callback. Pricing: Free Zapier-style workflows; AI agents from $35/month. To build these from a ChatGPT chat, add the Carly plugin: Get the Carly plugin
AI calls and texts from ChatGPT: Carly Teams
Carly Teams puts a business line behind ChatGPT, so it can dial out and text. The line is your team’s line in Carly, separate from your Quo numbers. Teams with a Twilio account connect it on the Phone page in Carly. Everyone else gets a number set up with the Carly team on a short call. From a ChatGPT chat you can:
- Have an AI voice agent place a call for a task, like confirming tomorrow’s delivery, then get a summary and transcript back.
- Follow the call as it happens, give the agent new instructions partway through, or hang up.
- Send and answer texts and go through missed calls and voicemail.
- Set up your agents. A voice agent can answer the line around the clock or after hours, qualify callers, book meetings on the team calendar or transfer a call live to a person. It answers in English or Spanish, whichever the caller speaks. A text agent can text back missed calls.
Each call is logged with a summary and transcript, and the CRM updates based on how it went. ChatGPT checks the team, the recipient and the message or task with you before any text or call, and stays within your team permissions.
Setup is one prompt. Paste it into a new ChatGPT chat. It walks you through Plugins, Add, Create MCP App, naming it Carly Teams, choosing OAuth and signing in, with Developer mode first if that option is missing. Then it confirms it can see your phone lines.
Carly business setup prompt
Paste this into ChatGPT, Claude, Grok or any AI agent. It connects your team's calls, texts, voicemail and voice agents, one step at a time.
Help me connect Carly Teams so I can work with my organization's business texts, phone calls, voicemail and voice/text agents from this chat.
I'll add Carly Teams to you myself. It isn't in any plugin or connector directory yet, so it gets added as a custom connection by URL: https://carlyassistant.com/team/mcp. Tell me exactly what to click for the app you are, one step at a time, and wait for me to confirm before moving on. If you can run the setup yourself (Claude Code, Codex, Muse, Grok Bot), go ahead.
1. Tell me how to add Carly Teams. Give me only the steps for the app you are:
- ChatGPT: I open https://chatgpt.com/plugins, click Add, and choose Create MCP App (not Create plugin or Upload plugin archive). If Create MCP App isn't on the menu, I turn on Developer mode first in Settings > Security and login. I name it "Carly Teams" with the description "Work with my team's business texts, calls, voicemail and voice/text agents," paste https://carlyassistant.com/team/mcp as the server URL, choose OAuth, create it, and sign in. Then in the message box I open the + menu, choose Developer mode, and pick Carly Teams. Don't have me build, package or upload a plugin.
- Claude (claude.ai, Claude Desktop, or Cowork): I go to Customize > Connectors > Add custom connector, name it Carly Teams, paste https://carlyassistant.com/team/mcp, and sign in.
- Claude Code: run claude mcp add --transport http --scope user carly-teams https://carlyassistant.com/team/mcp then I run /mcp, pick carly-teams, and authenticate.
- Codex: run codex mcp add carly-teams --url https://carlyassistant.com/team/mcp then codex mcp login carly-teams
- Cursor: I add {"mcpServers": {"carly-teams": {"url": "https://carlyassistant.com/team/mcp"}}} to ~/.cursor/mcp.json, then sign in to carly-teams from Customize.
- Muse: I create a Carly API key at carlyassistant.com/integrations (Advanced > API Keys > Create a new key, with organization read and write scopes for the actions I need). You build a custom connector to https://carlyassistant.com/team/mcp using the key as a bearer token and ask me for it in your secure credential prompt.
- Grok: I go to grok.com/connectors, choose New Connector, then Custom, paste https://carlyassistant.com/team/mcp, and sign in.
- Grok Bot: add a custom remote MCP server named carly-teams with https://carlyassistant.com/team/mcp, then I approve it and sign in.
- Perplexity: I go to Settings > Connectors > Custom connector > Remote, paste https://carlyassistant.com/team/mcp, and sign in.
- Anything else: I add a remote MCP server (streamable HTTP) named carly-teams with https://carlyassistant.com/team/mcp. It signs in with OAuth.
I sign in with the Carly account that belongs to my organization. If a step doesn't match what I see, ask me what's on my screen before giving the next one.
2. When I say it's added, check that you can see the Carly Teams tools, including list_phone_lines. If you can't yet, tell me how to turn Carly Teams on for this chat, or tell me to open a new chat and paste this prompt again.
3. Check it worked: call list_phone_lines to show the teams and phone lines I can access. Don't tell me it's connected until that call succeeds. If I have several teams, ask which to use. If the team needs a phone line, help me connect its existing Twilio account on the Phone page in Carly.
4. Ask what I want to do first, for example: "Review our missed calls and voicemail and help me reply to customers." I can also read and answer business texts, have the team's agent make a call, or edit the voice and text agents. Before sending texts or making calls, confirm the team, recipient and message or task with me. Respect my team permissions.
For my email, calendars, files, booking pages and workflows, add the regular Carly plugin as a separate connection. It's listed in ChatGPT's plugin directory (https://chatgpt.com/plugins/plugin_asdk_app_6a67a26316b88191860222f918d4ec54) and Claude's connector directory (https://claude.ai/directory/carly), and anywhere else it connects at https://carlyassistant.com/mcp/.Then try:
- “Have the agent call Josh to confirm Friday’s 10am walkthrough. Watch the call, and if Friday’s out, tell it to offer Monday afternoon.”
- “Set up our voice agent to pick up after 6pm, book new callers on Claire’s calendar and transfer anything urgent to Michael.”

FAQ
Is there an official Quo or OpenPhone plugin for ChatGPT?
Yes. Quo, which was called OpenPhone until September 2025, publishes it. Search Quo in ChatGPT’s Plugins directory, not OpenPhone. Quo says it works on every Quo plan.
Can ChatGPT send texts through Quo?
Yes, from any Quo number you can access, after you approve: one person, a group thread of up to 10, or private texts to up to 40. Each costs $0.01 per US or Canada segment from Quo’s prepaid credits.
Can ChatGPT make or answer calls on my Quo number?
No. The plugin reads calls and voicemail but has no calling tool. For calls ChatGPT can start, watch and steer, Carly Teams places them with a live AI voice agent on your team’s Carly line.
Can ChatGPT follow up on a missed Quo call automatically?
Not by itself, because a missed call can’t start it. Carly can check Quo on a schedule and send the follow-up from your own inbox.

"Before Carly, I relied on a Calendly link, but the whole process felt impersonal and not very professional. Carly changed that by handling all the back-and-forth, so I'm no longer stuck in endless email threads trying to line up schedules.
Now Carly reaches out to candidates, shares my real-time availability, lets them pick a slot, then sends a Zoom link and drops it straight into my calendar. She sends reminders to both of us before each call, which has significantly reduced no-shows and last-minute confusion.
On top of scheduling, Carly acts like a full executive assistant, sending me my schedule the night before so I can prepare for each call. It reminds me of the old x.ai assistant, but Carly is noticeably smarter, faster, and better suited to my healthcare recruitment business."
