Google Calendar Not Syncing? 9 Fixes That Work

Google Calendar sync breaks in a handful of predictable ways, and the fix depends on where it broke. Work through these in order. The first three solve it most of the time.

1. Confirm the calendar is actually turned on

An unchecked calendar looks exactly like a sync failure. Events are there, they are just hidden.

On desktop, look at the left sidebar and make sure the checkbox next to the calendar is ticked. On the mobile app, tap the three-line menu and confirm the calendar is checked in the list. On iPhone’s built-in Calendar app, tap Calendars at the bottom and make sure the Gmail calendars are selected.

2. Check sync is enabled at the account level

On Android: open Settings, tap Accounts, pick your Google account, tap Account sync, and confirm Calendar is on. Toggle it off and back on to force a refresh.

On iPhone: open Settings, tap Calendar, tap Accounts, choose your Gmail account, and make sure Calendars is switched on.

In the Google Calendar iOS app: tap the menu, tap Settings, choose the account, and confirm the calendars you want are set to sync. Google’s iOS app has a separate sync list from iOS itself, which trips up a lot of people.

3. Check the date range you are looking at

The Google Calendar mobile app only syncs a limited window by default, so events far in the future can appear missing. Scroll to the actual date rather than trusting the agenda view. On iPhone, the built-in Calendar app also has a “Sync” setting under Settings, Calendar, Sync that may be set to “Events 1 Month Back” rather than All Events.

4. Force a refresh

Pull down on the mobile app to refresh. On desktop, hard-reload the page with Cmd+Shift+R or Ctrl+Shift+R. This clears a surprising number of display-only problems.

5. Clear the app’s cache

On Android: Settings, Apps, Calendar, Storage, then Clear cache. Clear cache, not storage, so you do not remove your accounts.

On iPhone: iOS has no cache clear, so delete and reinstall the Google Calendar app. Your events live on Google’s servers, so nothing is lost.

6. Re-add the account

If sync has been broken for days, the account connection itself may have expired, usually after a password change or a new two-factor setup. Remove the Google account from your device and add it back. This forces a fresh token and a full re-sync.

7. Check for a subscribed calendar that is stale

Calendars you subscribed to by URL do not update in real time. Google refreshes them on its own schedule, which can run to many hours, and you cannot force it. If the stale calendar is one you subscribed to rather than one you own, this is expected behavior rather than a bug. Our guide on the Google Calendar ICS refresh rate explains the timing.

8. Check storage and connection basics

A full device storage partition stops sync silently on Android. So does aggressive battery optimization, which can suspend the Calendar app in the background. On Android, go to Settings, Apps, Calendar, Battery, and set it to unrestricted.

9. When it is Outlook or Apple Calendar that is out of date

If Google Calendar itself looks correct in a browser but the events are missing from Outlook or Apple Calendar, the problem is the connection between the two, not Google. That is a different fix. See how to sync Google Calendar with Outlook and how to sync Google Calendar with Apple Calendar.

Why one-way sync keeps breaking

Most of these fixes are patching the same underlying problem: every calendar connection is a separate pipe, and each one can fail on its own. Add a work Google account, a personal one, and an Outlook calendar, and you now have several pipes that each need to be healthy for your availability to be correct.

Carly reads all of your calendars directly rather than mirroring them into one another. Because it queries each account live, there is no sync window to fall behind and no stale copy to troubleshoot. When someone books through a booking page, the slot is only offered if you are genuinely free across every calendar you connected.

You can also put the follow-on work on rails with a workflow, and Carly connects to thousands of apps so the meeting can update your CRM or your task list without another integration bill. Free Zapier-style workflows; AI agents from $35/month.

FAQ

Why is my Google Calendar not syncing with my iPhone?

Usually because Calendars is switched off for that account in Settings, Calendar, Accounts, or because iOS is set to sync only recent events. Check both. If you keep hitting this across accounts, Carly reads your calendars live instead of relying on device sync.

Why are my Google Calendar events not showing up?

Most often the calendar is unchecked in the sidebar rather than missing. Confirm the checkbox first, then check the date range, then clear the cache.

How long does Google Calendar take to sync?

Calendars you own sync within seconds. Calendars you subscribed to by URL are refreshed on Google’s own schedule and can lag by many hours, which is not something you can speed up.

Why does my shared calendar not update?

The share may not have been accepted, or the permission may be view-only on a calendar that was since deleted and recreated. Ask the owner to re-share. To avoid the problem, share availability rather than a calendar.

Will re-adding my account delete my events?

No. Events live on Google’s servers, so removing and re-adding the account on your device only rebuilds the local copy.

"Before Carly, I relied on a Calendly link, but the whole process felt impersonal and not very professional. Carly changed that by handling all the back-and-forth, so I'm no longer stuck in endless email threads trying to line up schedules.

Now Carly reaches out to candidates, shares my real-time availability, lets them pick a slot, then sends a Zoom link and drops it straight into my calendar. She sends reminders to both of us before each call, which has significantly reduced no-shows and last-minute confusion.

On top of scheduling, Carly acts like a full executive assistant, sending me my schedule the night before so I can prepare for each call. It reminds me of the old x.ai assistant, but Carly is noticeably smarter, faster, and better suited to my healthcare recruitment business."
