How to Change Your Background on Google Meet (2026)

Google Meet can blur your background, replace it with an image, or add a light filter — all without a green screen. You can set it before joining or change it mid-call. Here’s how on every device.

Change Your Background on a Computer

Before you join

  1. On the green-room preview (the screen with the Join now button), click the Apply visual effects icon — the sparkle in the bottom right of your self-view.
  2. In the effects panel choose:
    • Slight blur or Blur your background — keeps you sharp, softens everything behind you.
    • A preset background image, or Add (the + tile) to upload your own.
    • A filter or style for a lighter touch.
  3. Click your choice, then Join now.

During a meeting

  1. Click the three-dot More options menu and choose Apply visual effects, or click the effects icon on your self-view.
  2. Pick blur, a background, or a filter. It applies straight away.

Change Your Background on Mobile

  1. Open the Meet app and start or join a meeting (or use the pre-join screen).
  2. Tap your self-view tile, then tap Effects.
  3. Choose Blur, a background image, or a filter.
  4. Tap Done.

The same effects sync whether you’re on a phone, tablet, or computer.

Turn Off or Switch Effects

To go back to your real background, reopen the effects panel and choose the No effects option (the clear / crossed-circle tile). You can switch between blur, images, and filters as often as you like during a call.

Troubleshooting

I don’t see the visual effects icon

Effects need a reasonably modern device and an up-to-date browser. Update Chrome (or the Meet app), close other heavy apps, and rejoin. Some immersive or branded backgrounds require a Workspace edition.

Effects are slow, glitchy, or my outline flickers

Background effects are processor-heavy. Close other tabs and apps, switch to a wired connection or better light, and try slight blur instead of a full virtual background — it’s lighter on your machine.

Uploaded background won’t load

Use a standard JPG or PNG that isn’t too large. Re-upload it from the Add (+) tile in the effects panel.

My background keeps turning off

A browser update or a switch between devices can reset effects. Reapply it from the effects panel; on shared or managed computers, an admin policy may disable custom backgrounds.
