How to Connect Multiple SharePoint Sites to ChatGPT
ChatGPT can index several SharePoint sites, as long as they all sit in one Microsoft tenant. The connector authorizes a single Microsoft identity, so your own company’s sites and a client’s sites are two different problems with two different answers.
Here is where the line falls and how to work across it.
What the SharePoint connector does
SharePoint connectors on ChatGPT let ChatGPT search and read the sites and libraries your connected account has permission to see. The synced connector indexes selected content so search-style questions come back quickly, and ChatGPT enforces the SharePoint permissions that already exist rather than flattening them. On Enterprise and Edu workspaces an admin-managed sync connector lets administrators authenticate once and deploy at workspace scale.
Within one tenant, then, “multiple sites” is largely a matter of selecting them during setup. Add the sites you want indexed and ChatGPT can answer across all of them.
Two things it does not do. Access is read-oriented, so it will not upload, edit, move, or reorganize anything in a library. And nothing in SharePoint starts a task: a Scheduled Task can sweep on a timer, but a document landing in a library triggers nothing.
Where it stops: the second tenant
One Microsoft identity means one tenant. This is the wall for consultants, agencies, fractional executives, and anyone holding a guest account in someone else’s Microsoft 365: your sites in one tenant, the client’s in another, and one question that needs both.
The ChatGPT account switcher does not solve it. Separate logins keep their connected apps separate by design, so a second tenant means a second ChatGPT session rather than one assistant that sees everything.
1. Sort your sites by tenant
| Site | Tenant | Reachable natively? |
|---|---|---|
| Marketing team site | Your company | Yes, select it during setup |
| Contracts library | Your company | Yes, select it during setup |
| Client delivery site | Client tenant | No, second identity |
2. Connect the SharePoint connector
- In ChatGPT, open Settings → Connectors.
- Choose the SharePoint connector for work or school accounts.
- Sign in with your Microsoft account and approve access. On a work tenant your Microsoft 365 admin may need to grant consent first.
- Select the sites and libraries to sync.
- Ask about a document, or @-mention the connector in a prompt.
Confirm it works on a document you know before adding anything else.
3. Connect each tenant to Carly
- Sign in at carlyassistant.com.
- Open carlyassistant.com/integrations.
- Find SharePoint and click Connect.
- Authorize the first Microsoft identity.
- Repeat for every additional tenant, using a different account each time.
- Verify which tenant each connection landed in before adding the next.
On a client tenant where you are not the administrator, request approval early. That is usually the long pole.
4. Add Carly to ChatGPT
- Open Plugins in the ChatGPT sidebar.
- Click +.
- Paste
https://carlyassistant.com/mcp/. - Authorize and sign in to the Carly workspace holding the tenants.
If + is disabled, a workspace administrator needs to enable plugins.
5. Keep approval on while testing
Open your profile menu, then Settings → Apps, and leave approval enabled for changes. Reads run freely; anything that writes into a library pauses so you can see which site it is about to touch.
6. Test each site read-only
In the Contracts library on our own tenant, list the five most recently modified documents. Do not change anything.
In the client delivery site, find the current statement of work and give me its last modified date. Read only.
Then the cross-tenant search:
Search our Contracts library and the client delivery site for “change order” from the last 90 days. Show the source site and tenant in every row.
7. Reuse this routing prompt
Treat the Contracts library and Marketing team site as Internal, and the client delivery site as Client. Always state the target site and tenant before filing, updating, or routing anything. Wait for approval on any write.
Native connector versus Carly in ChatGPT
| Need | SharePoint connector | Carly plugin |
|---|---|---|
| Read several sites in one tenant | Yes | Yes |
| Read sites across two tenants | No | Yes |
| Upload or update files in a library | No | Yes |
| Act when a document lands | No | Yes |
| Connect documents to email, calendar, and CRM | Read side only | Yes |
| Run the same work outside ChatGPT | No | Yes |
Finding the document is the easy half. The half that repeats is what follows it: a signed contract arrives, and it should be filed against the right client, its renewal date should reach a calendar, the account owner should get a summary, and the counterparty should get a confirmation. Carly fires on the document landing rather than on a prompt, and runs in the cloud so it happens whether or not you are at your desk.

Quick fixes
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| A site in your own tenant is missing | Confirm it was selected during setup and that your account can open it |
| The client tenant will not authorize | Ask their administrator to approve the connection |
| Plugins + is disabled | Ask the ChatGPT workspace admin to enable plugins |
| ChatGPT reads the wrong site | Name the site and tenant and require source attribution |
| Results look stale | Synced connectors index on their own schedule; confirm the sync has run |
Frequently asked questions
Can ChatGPT search more than one SharePoint site?
Yes, within one tenant. Select the sites during connector setup and ChatGPT can answer across all of them, enforcing the SharePoint permissions you already have.
Can ChatGPT connect to two SharePoint tenants?
Not natively. The connector authorizes a single Microsoft identity, so a second tenant is a second connection.
Does the account switcher give me both tenants?
No. Each ChatGPT login keeps its own connected apps, so you end up with two sessions rather than one assistant that sees both.
Can ChatGPT upload or update files in SharePoint?
No. The connector is read-oriented. Writing into a library takes a tool that has write access, such as a connected agent.

See what people say
"Before Carly, I relied on a Calendly link, but the whole process felt impersonal and not very professional. Carly changed that by handling all the back-and-forth, so I'm no longer stuck in endless email threads trying to line up schedules.
Now Carly reaches out to candidates, shares my real-time availability, lets them pick a slot, then sends a Zoom link and drops it straight into my calendar. She sends reminders to both of us before each call, which has significantly reduced no-shows and last-minute confusion.
On top of scheduling, Carly acts like a full executive assistant, sending me my schedule the night before so I can prepare for each call. It reminds me of the old x.ai assistant, but Carly is noticeably smarter, faster, and better suited to my healthcare recruitment business."
